      @HelloRaptor The hell is E6?

      E6 is D&D stripped of its fun levels past 6, more or less.

      It aims to do with D&D what was being discussed here re: WoD, where you're never more than one crit from a spear away from dying and a downgraded Cone of Cold is the most epic spellcasting you'll ever see.

      Can you pick up the gun from the bad guy you just shot? Usually this seems to be not allowed or require a great amount of paperwork.

      Yeah, it's kind of ridiculous how touchy staff get about this.

      "BUT OMG WHAT IF SOMEBODY RAN A PLOT JUST SO SOMEONE COULD GET A BUNCH OF GUNS FOR FREE!!!111omgomgomgogm!"

      ...yeah, that'd be... terrible, I guess? Your MU* might crack open and somethingsomething, I guess?

      Eyeballs are a squick factor for me. I cannot deal with eyeball mutilation.

      The Strain is made almost entirely of squick factor, and eyeballs do figure, so... yeah. You do not want. >_>

      I ❤ it though.

      It's so bad, but I keep watching. I even made a Requiem Devotion for vampires who want DAT TUNG.

      You shut your mouth, there is nothing bad about The Strain. 😞

      I'm about halfway through Season 1 and it is FANTASTIC. I missed scary vampires.

      That's the thing though: they aren't really scary. The show fails to be actually scary.

      It's more like Resident Evil style zombies, sort of.

      I may look into that. This will be the second attempt to install it where it's locked up.

      Is it locking up during the installation itself, or is the windows update feature locking up?

      There's a Windows 8.1/10 thread I made here, I mentioned a few issues I had. one of the biggest is making sure to disable (or even uninstall) all antivirus. I even had to go in and manually turn off windows defender in a couple of cases, while doing an in-place update.

      That's my plan this morning. Let's hope things don't go insane. I'm trying to go back through the files because, I wanted to make sure something was working and the new laptop gave me an update prompt, but I skipped it to do it later, and now I'm trying to find that update prompt in the system again.

      I felt roughly like a mutant with anti-tech powers yesterday because of this, as my phone kept having app crashes every time I opened them for about three hours too, last night.

      ETA: Found it. Time to update. Wish me luck and send me some Genoshan anti-mutant power blockers.

      Don't listen to @Arkandel, the win10 start menu is still kind of meh. I'm still using Classic Shell to get my win7 bar back. Works great for both win8/8.1 and win10.

      Why, it's almost as if people could care about more than one thing at a time...

      No, no, you're right. There totally aren't an overwhelming number of people on social media who haven't once commented on #blacklivesmatter or any variations of the same but whose facebook and twitter accounts are on fire with outrage and tears over Cecil the lion's cruel, cruel fate.

      My bad. I shouldn't have directed my sarcasm at those people I was pretty obviously not talking about. If only I'd indicated in my comment that it was directed at those people, some way I could have implied that people who care about both were not the source of my scorn. 😞

      Or maybe it's still just funny as hell whenever people jump on a #hashtag bandwagon without taking the time to figure out what it actually represents, regardless of any of that shit.

      The fact that there are people who think that's a serious hashtag instead of mocking them for caring more about animal lives than human ones, is consistently hysterical.

      @Templari said:

      @Arkandel For a series? Full Metal Alchemist. good story arc with enough humor in there to keep it from always getting too overly serious. (And there are some tense serious ongoings)

      Only watch Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood, not the original. Mind, I liked the original, but there's a point where it sort of jumped the rails. It had the problem that they were animating it while the manga was ongoing, and so when they caught up they had to choose between a million filler episodes while they waited for it to continue, or just guessing where the story was going and possibly getting everything pretty horribly wrong, and they went for the latter.

      FMA:B was done after it was over, in more direct cooperating with the guy responsible for the manga, and has both a better paced, more complete story and much better animation. It's also a pretty good jump in point to anime. A lot of the 'classics' like Vampire Hunter D and Cowboy Bebop are starting to show (or have been showing for quite some time) their age, which matters to some folks. I still suggest giving them a try, I just always like to tack on stuff that came out in the last decade or so as well.

      It does sort of come down to what kind of shows and movies you like in general, though. There's a pretty ridiculously wide array of themes and approaches in anime, even when dealing with the same subject matter, and taste can vary pretty wildly if you aren't like me and essentially consume almost all of it equally (with some notable exceptions).

      I don't even know what SJW means anymore.

      I think the meaning has kind of devolved into some sort of internet troll/slacktivist. I think it used to be used for actual activists who seemed to be at every protest no matter the topic, but these days who can be arsed to get off the internet?

      That's what I mean, and I think @Arkandel does as well. Well, that even those well meaning but wildly delusional folks who take shit too far. When somebody on facebook says they believe there ought to be some kind of social decency laws that would crack down on comedians making rape jokes (or any other subject they just find 'too offensive to be appropriate subject matter for jokes'), then get a huge flood of likes and supportive comments, I'm probably grinding my teeth about SoJuWas. Wonder if that made it past @silentsophia's filter.

      But yeah, beyond that it's generally referring to the sort of internet slacktivists and worse. People who are either a: using whatever subject to attention whore because they know it'll get them favorable attention, or b: railing against a social injustice they could actually go out and do something about in an active fashion, but can't be bothered to because anything more difficult than a facebook post would just be exhausting I guess.

      Also like everyone in America completely losing their fucking minds over some dentist killing a lion. The Revenge For Cecil folks have been acting like the worst of the GamerGate folks, complete with everything from comments to direct threats (emails, phone calls, packages, etc) of death and torture, and entirely predictable backlash onto otherwise uninvolved people around their actual target either by accident or deliberately by the more unstable members of their outraged movement.

      @Ycevolod & some others:

      Full disclosure. Once upon a time, when I was a wee young lad, I habitually played girls in video games to get handouts. I sometimes wonder if my e-bfs from those days ever think about me.

      Rambling on the subject:

      I used to play mostly female characters on City of Heroes. It started out because I was in on it from the start and the female costume options and details outnumbered the ones for male characters by factors of a whole goddamn lot, and I liked coming up with costumes as much as playing.

      I noticed pretty immediately that people were far more helpful and pleasant, and that yes, they gave me stuff (power leveling, currency, enhancements, etc). There were a couple of guys who acted like creeps, but since I almost always formed my own teams I just booted them and moved on. I appreciated the early help so much that later on I went to spend a huge chunk of time helping others in a similar fashion, though I was pretty equal opportunity about it.

      Mind, the CoH community was overall a pretty good one, so even when I played a male character people were generally pretty cool. I did notice a pretty marked difference in how much leeway I had to poke fun at people while we played. People tended to start shit with my male character if it got too pointed, and usually as publicly as possible, while with my female characters I'd generally just get a polite private message letting me know they didn't appreciate something.

      I never really claimed to be female RL, but I also never corrected people one way or another regardless of the character type, and let folks assume whatever they wanted. I didn't play any romance games with anybody, though.

      On the actual subject of flirty chicks and it getting them stuff, it's worth noting that a lot of people will give free stuf to pretty much anybody who's friendly, which flirty usually qualifies as. It's not hard in most MMOs to have ridiculous levels of wealth and resource acquisition, and sharing it with folks who have less (when it costs you nothing to do so really) is something people find fun, so odds are at least decent that the person giving something out to somebody else who's being all flirty at them would do so even if they were just being friendly period.

      @TNP

      Let's get something straight. Mayo is good. Miracle Whip is good. Miracle Whip is not a substitute for mayo any more than ketchup (whis is good) is a substitute for mustard (which is also good). They are different condiments.

      @Templari

      This is a fairly simple concept to grasp... yet so many fail.

      That's like saying a car is not a substitute for a truck (because despite both being vehicles you can't cart a piano around in a car) any more than a bicycle is not a substitute for a fighter jet (because despite both being conveyances you can't fire missiles from a bicycle). Other than being condiments, mustard and ketchup are completely different beasts, but miracle whip was created specifically as a cheaper alternative to mayonnaise and made using the same key ingredients as mayonnaise, just in different amounts. In particular, the only reason miracle whip wasn't labeled as a type of mayonnaise is because it doesn't meet a minimum vegetable oil content required for labeling purposes.

      Sure, they're 'different', but in the way that two very similar but not identical things are 'different'. That is not even remotely the way ketchup and mustard are 'different'. 😛

      Has anyone noticed any appreciable improvement in their gaming from having DirectX 12?

      I remain a very happy Windows 7 user, but that in particular is making upgrading tempting.

      I had been using Linux before (and will again once I've gone through my queue of non-wine runnable games 🙂 ) so I can't compare empirically, but you could look at a benchmark comparison chart such as the one here: http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2015/08/gamers-its-safe-to-upgrade-to-windows-10/ .

      That's a good article. You're not going to see any real advantages to DX12 because, as it notes, there aren't any DX12 games out yet.

      The security article is a bit hyperbolic in some places, but all the technical information is good for people to have. I hadn't really thought about people buying a new machine with the OS who don't immediately wipe it and reinstall.

      Aren't we a constitutionally limited representative democratic republic? I mean leaving aside the corporate overlords who run everything for reals.

      @Derp

      That's because US politicians are owned by corporations. Which is why Trump as a president terrifies me so.

      I kind of hope he wins. It would serve the Republican party, as an entity, with a delicious plate full of irony as everything they pretend not to be gets brought directly to the forefront.

      Trump isn't doing or saying anything that isn't being done or said by the rest of the rich dudes who buy politics behind the scenes, he's just being crass about not staying behind the scenes.
