RE: How did you discover text-based gaming?
I was a pen and paper gamer nerd, not a computer one. But my university ended up creating the Blacksburg Electronic Village (everyone at the school plus most of the town was wired to the Internet, one of the first places in the US to do so--I could order a pizza off the internet and have it delivered to my dorm in 1994) so there was a lot of buzz/excitement about using computers for more than just word processing and floppy disk games. Being a stupid teenager, of course I got into a new weird thing called a chat program (PowWow, which for you youngsters is like chat roulette with no video of boobs or jacking off, sadly) and moos. Then one of my campus role playing guild friends told me about mushing. I played on an original theme place for the first time soon after that. Found SR Seattle in 1995. Along with some Star Wars games and a couple of WoT places soon after. Somehow I managed to graduate, and then in 96 I found a changeling game (TCtTT) which started me on the path to hating Ling but enjoying WoD.
Took a long break between 2002-2008 (with a few false starts) because 3 kids in 17 months means you're busy like whoa, when i dipped my toe in after that everything had shifted to nwod and there were wikis and all that and it was like a whole new world.

RE: Dom/Sub imbalance on MUSHes
I think because putting up an ad even for someone looking to play a ghoul will get you some pretty vile responses from would be regnants as well as a lot of derision in general. I cannot imagine what would happen if one were to make plain that they were also seeking D/s TS.

RE: Pay to Play MUSHing?
I find that once I meet and spend time with someone RL I have a far more generous read of their tone and behavior than I would otherwise.
If we have different perspectives on certain ethics (such as CoI) once I get to know someone I have a more nuanced view (also aided by the fact that I know better how to start the conversation about something that is bothering me) and do not feel as autodefensive as if I have no frame of reference.
It doesn't mean I don't understand when behavior is shitty. I once reported face to face RL friends to Sunny because of cheating issues amongst other things, and that in part detonated many of those RL friendships for nearly a decade, others never recovered, and most were changed.
But I disagree that online behavior should be seen as an accurate and sum total reflection of a person. I think it's a snapshot. And can be concerning. But there's a greater context most of the time and so I disagree that it should be taken as the "truest" reflection.

RE: Dom/Sub imbalance on MUSHes
I suppose I am guilty of the same; when I mention harem I'm speaking of a formation of a bunch of people primarily centered on a single individual. Sometimes without their knowledge, most of the time with large helpings of "well, I just feel sorry for person a, b, and c, it's really you that I am interested in". And by no means is it always a guy with a bunch of gals, though I think it tends to be that on WoD and other majority female places--I have seen it reversed there and on male dominated places (like SR in the olden days).

RE: Dom/Sub imbalance on MUSHes
I don't think dominant/submissive is the dynamic in most harem situations.
Of course I also don't think the people that label themselves "dominant" or "submissive" in a mush situation tend to behave that way either.
So I dunno. I don't think there's a huge imbalance, usually. Where it seems to be a problem is when there's not enough people for the folks that want to pair off to pair off with, but that's the issue more so than what people are labeled as (and also why I think harems tend to be horrible--because most of the people that find themselves in that situation really don't want it. There are exceptions, though.)

RE: Scenes You Have Always Wanted to Have...
What I have found is the problem come less from IC and more from players who are very strong circle the wagons ooc types and who love to show off their +sheet powers. Usually those folks are very easy to spot with the ooc behavior in scenes/on channel, ect. They can be nice/fun to "their people" but everyone else (especially those that "threaten" their people/group) look out.
Just long experience has made it so that I tend to not hook into frenemy play with anyone who has a possessive partner/group or who has in their friends circle/group someone whose ooc behavior towards people they don't know or on public venues like chat makes me uncomfortable.

RE: Scenes You Have Always Wanted to Have...
I love rituals/cults. I know a handful of others who do as well so when we've been able to coordinate schedules (which doesn't happen often) it's fantastic rp. I actually have many notebooks and regular books collected over the years for inspiration for writing/development! Even 1 on 1 those are awesome engaging scenes.
I love IC nemeses. I have been one and had one quite a few times. What I have sadly learned though is that while I find I rarely have to vet the person I'm going to be frenemies with, since the people who are serious (vs. the Victimize Me! teeheehee People) are almost always awesome...I do now know it's good to know who their friends are. If they hang with ooc white knights it's not going to be worth the ooc drama and headache.

RE: Scenes You Have Always Wanted to Have...
I think sometimes it's a case of the ST not really thinking about their group, sometimes, too. If it's got a bunch of teenagers and/or wannabe alpha males/females in it, I think probably it's not unIC for there to be lip and bluster and dumb and overconfidence. Vs. a more cerebral crowd.
Though I will say it really does suck to be the PC freaking out/panicking and therefore coming up with stupid ideas IC and have the other players or ST like...not react at all. Or even worse, assume that oocly you're a dumbass because your character is reacting vs being instacompetant.
I still do it--I think there's only been one PC of mine in recent memory that doesn't barf at blood/guts/weirdness or do silly things like shout and pretend they're going to stand their ground but rarely am I called on it and have to turn tail and run. :). But it is really a bummer that most of the time people don't even blink.
I did get a ton of hilarious pemits when my ghoul lost her lunch at a vampire execution on TR though.

RE: More Fitness
I have a jawbone up2. I liked the fit better than the Fitbit and I don't like clipons and I really like the jawbone app.
I too am back in the saddle after being very ill for about a year. My goal isn't a weight one per se, but I have lost a lot of muscle and fitness basically and my goal is to do a local sprint level triathlon in August now that I have the medical all clear.

RE: RL Anger
We have too many trees for satellite or direct. I love our property, but we are on a couple of acres of old growth. There's a field but our house is in the trees, which is fantastic for heat control in the summer and beautiful awesome bit scary in windstorms and sucks for tv reception and access.

RE: RL Anger
And now they refuse to give updates or any estimate of when things will be repaired.
Yes. I realize our mini "neighborhood" is the old country/rural ish parcel sandwiched between two McMansion land developments and gee it's so inconvenient for you to have to service us, Frontier, but...fuck you. My husband telecommutes to fucking London which means he can't do his work like he needs to while this is out, and we are totally without landlines in the meantime.
Might be time to bite the bullet and pay to have cable run out here for the internet only option. At least then there would be an option. Waiting a week calling every day with no update or proactive communication and only finding out things by walking down and talking to repair crews who weren't even on our repair ticket (they were there for our neighbor who called a day after we did)--unacceptable!
-
RE: RL Anger
Still no landline or Internet. Gotta love monopolies. They might fix the problem today though.

RE: Make us love your favorite game
Whatever the system was for BS Deimos and Orion. Simple, understandable coded combat that allowed for seamless rp and moving scenes and enhanced the Rp rather than grinding it to a screeching halt.
I really enjoyed getting to rp and do battle and combat scenes without having to worry about (for the most part) people bitching and moaning the entire time and endless rules lookups.

RE: RL Anger
Fucking landline and ISP monopolies. Flooding and construction cut power and phone lines on Friday--power is back but the phone/ISP company is like maybe we'll come take a look on Tuesday, LOL.

RE: Coming in 2016 - Bump in the Night
You could call them the Syphilian Task Force.

RE: Feelings of not being wanted...
Yeah, I think some kind of +finger based list of "People disqualified from RP with me" probably at least to me kind of says more about the person publicizing it. I have seen people do something close to that and TBH it always ends up I think after spending time with that person "wow, I can sure tell why you have problems with people!"
It's such a passive and kind of gross thing to foist your drama on everyone like that. Just avoid that person, if you will melt if you have to be in the same scene then politely excuse yourself so that you don't burden the ST or the other people.
And I 1000 percent agree that if someone is using the "I'd be all over you but poor me my other lady friend won't let me" excuse? Maaaybe the lady friend is a total bitch, but it's 99.9 percent the case that the poor guy caught "in the middle" is an even bigger asshole.

RE: Good or New Movies Review
I used to hate all reboots/remakes/reimaginings period. But the Star Trek movies and Mad Max have turned it around for me. I'm willing to give them a try. The team on the new one looks pretty ok, so. I think the timing may be a bit unfortunate for some people though.
