    • Shadows of Paradise: help wanted!

      ‘Shadows of Paradise’ is a NWoD 2.0 MUSH currently under development. Set on the paradise island of Ibiza, our aim is to offer a new kind of WoD experience.

      Focussing heavily on quality over quantity, we aim to maintain a high ratio of players to storytellers and provide a plot-heavy environment, where every character can receive individual attention from storytelling staff.

      We are currently planning to offer:

      • Vampire: The Requiem 2nd Edition
      • Demon: The Descent
      • Beast: The Primordial
      • Mortal/Mortal+
      • Associated Minor Templates

      We made a strong start, but unfortunately have hit a roadblock relatively early, with our coder being swallowed by RL and disappearing.

      We're still really excited about what Shadows of Paradise has the potential to become, and would love to find a similarly enthusiastic coder to help us bring the project to life. If you're familiar with MU code and think you might be able to help - we would surely love to hear from you!

      Please send me a message if you would like to find out more, or if you think you might be willing to help us out.

      @misadventure

      I would go with that and write the setting so that adopting an adult heir is considered normal and valid. Kind of like Caesar and Octavian. Does away with the need to breed as a story device.

      Completely off-topic, but my family and I would go walking along by Wheal Coates (in the picture above I am pretty sure) every year on vacation when I was a kid. It made me smile to see it.

      It actually reopened just recently. The CG and stuff for it are really impressive.

    • RE: Diversity Representation in MU*ing

      @saosmash

      I would like this. I think my point is that if you read through the available characters rosters, there are plenty that specifically mention heterosexual relationships. I will grant you that most do not mention anything at all, but almost none mention anything specifically LGBT. I get that there were some specific ones that @Roz mentioned and that you have written some that are intended to lean that way. But there is not a diverse representation.

      It is kind of like the (and I am definitely not comparing you to her in any other way) "Oh, Dumbledore was always gay and I just never thought to mention it" thing. If it doesn't say it, people can just ignore it.

      To be clear, not a criticism of you or of @roz but just a general observation.

      @ShelBeast

      Hi Shelbest!

      We do want to allow as much as we can within reason and I know that our vampire staffer is really keen to have bloodlines, as well as Dhampir.

      Demon we are going to be much more cautious with as the potential for craziness is much greater. I know that the staffer we have on board is keen to make sure that she is working with a small, knowledgeable group of players. Stigmatics will be a thing for sure though.

      Though this might actually all be a bit of a non-starter unless we find another coder, and we are fairly early in development, so a lot may still change.

      Hope this was of at least some help!

    • RE: Roster Characters & WoD?

      @chibichibi

      I think Rosters would be good because it lets the game runners set the tone of the game. If you don't want that really weird concept, or the comedy concept, or that concept that is your pet peeve, you don't put it on the roster, and it will never show up. In particular, I think of the recent problems at Liberation and how easily those could have been avoided if they had simply offered a roster of characters they wanted to see and said "Here...pick one!"

      @Kanye-Qwest

      Yeah, I have re-read that, and I don't think I was very clear on what I meant at all. Sorry if I was not clear.

      I was more referring to the idea that because a character on the roster isn't specified either way or is hinted at being but it is ambiguous that you can (as a player) place an LGBTQIA identity on them after the fact and that would be representation. Which is what I meant about the Dumbledore thing. It still wasn't actually that great of a point now I read it again, but that is what I was getting at.

      It is nice that there is representation in Arx and in the backstory and clues and so forth. I have had lots of good experiences playing on Arx. My particular point is that I think it would be nice if there were more roster characters that were unambiguously written as being LGBTQIA.

      Which, I suppose I could take the plunge and try and write a couple, which would be a positive action.

      @royal

      Thank you for your interest! It is a cool setting!

      Unfortunately, it never came to anything. A few of the team that was working on it got snowballed by real life, and then one thing led to another and it never happened.

      I'm really sorry to disappoint you on that. 😞

      I tried Marsilikos and found it hard to get into, though everyone I met was super nice. I might need to try again with a different character at some point.

    • RE: The Work Thread

      I had the audacity to take a few days off of work this week! One of my customers took this less well than I hoped and so upon returning to the office I was treated to an ANGRY EMAIL. I will provide an excerpt!

      "I'll leave you with this. I hope your partner drops dead and while you attend their funeral, I hope your house catches fire and everything in it is razed to the ground so scum like you can know what it feels like to be in a state of unending turmoil and distress because bastards like you deserve it."

      So yeah, that eased me nicely back into the swing of things.

      @silverfox

      I also found that blog recently, based on some digging around I was doing as a result of this thread. It has a lot of (what seems to me) really useful/helpful information on it about various tropes and things as well, which was informative.

      I was searching because I was thinking about making my next PC black, based on the conversation have been having here, but I had some wariness about writing a description, as I was aware that there were some issues about the way that is commonly done -such as the food thing.

      There are useful pieces on describing hair, facial features and so on too, which I found helpful.

      Oh, thank goodness! I thought I was going mad! I was like "How sad!" but then I was like "But I'm sure I remember being sad about this previously!" and now I feel that all is right with the world. Except of course that Carol Channing is dead, which is very sad.

    • RE: How to launch a MU*

      I think one of the most important things to consider when planning out a MU is what you actually have the technical capacity to do.

      When I was working on my place, I had a few different ideas and settled on the one I chose because it was something I had all the tools for and felt confident I could pull off.

      Having done it once, I now have the tools I could do something more complex next time. But embarking on a project that is going to take a massive amount of coding you just don't have the know-how to do is kind of doomed from the start I think.

      The upside is that systems like Ares mean that making a game is no longer just something reserved for those with technical expertise, which is great. Because very often I do not think the skillsets of "knowing enough code to make a MU" and "having the social skills to RUN a MU" overlap very much.

    • RE: A Regency MU (Conceptual)

      I think this is a cool idea and I would definitely play it. If you are going Ares, you could certainly use groups to represent the various social strata.

      If I could beg and beg you to do one thing, it would be strictly to keep it to the nobility and gentry only and not include commoners as PCs.

      Regarding scandal and drama, I am interested to see what you do with that. I am playing around with ways to manage that right now so I will be interested to see what you come up with.

      Before I came up with the Crystal Springs idea I was heavily considering a modern-day Lords and Ladies game. I had been binging the CW reboot of Dynasty and the idea of these ultra-rich pseudo aritocratic families that are effectively a law unto themselves is pretty fascinating.
