    • RE: RL Anger

After several months of waiting for a visa response from immigration, I get an email that says a decision has been made.

...But the email doesn't say what that decision is. So now my ulcer is lighting me on fire as I sit and stew and can do nothing but stress and worry all weekend while waiting for them to send me my documents next week. This is cruel and unusual.

      Atonement

This is the MU I was referencing in the original post when I was talking about something original. I fully recognize there are licensed sci-fi universes out there that would cater easily to the lowest common denominators, but there's already a thread for whatever-sci-fi, you know? I'm only interested in original themes , preferably with enough complexity that people disinterested in reading/learning would just take a hike.

@rnmissionrun Yeah the last thing I'm looking for is yet another run of the mill sci-fi game based on this book or that comic using X, Y, or Z codebase. If I wanted zero-effort generic sandbox plug-n-play, I'd be taking up space on a WoD game.

@bobotron Re: purple prose for clothing, I don't much spend a lot of time on games that are so bare bones they don't even have clothing objects. So that bit of the argument is ruled out for me.

Have a wiki if you like, but make sure all of the information there is accessible through telnet as well for those who signed up for a MU, not a second social-media presence. I can make Mushclient look like legitimate work activity in my office, but uncropped pictures of your vajazzled vampire club-owning hooker are less convenient.

@thenomain Agreed. Longetivity/loyalty should be rewarded in perks, not pay. Base salary should be just that - the base amount everyone in that position doing that same work should make.

    • RE: Character Information: Wiki or Mu*?

I miss the days before wikis were a standardized feature. Back when you remembered a character's birthday or favorite color or the name of their pet because they told it to you once and you remembered, not because you checked Facebook(the wiki). I miss when people put more effort into their descriptions because they didn't have a picture to fall back on. I miss when you had to talk to people IC to learn their background story.

I don't like character wiki pages at all, but it doesn't seem like they're going anywhere, they're just too convenient, which is most unfortunate.

    • Original Sci-Fi?

Does anyone here remember Atonement? Not Grungetown, fuck that noise. But the very beginning. Alpha.

Where's the original sci-fi? Is anyone working on anything like this? I miss being excited in a game, I miss change and danger and progress, things we are sorely lacking as we make ever more vampires and...yeah just more and more vampires. Someone please have mercy and/or originality out here.

@pandora We'll clarify once we know ourselves.

I'd rather not have super detailed rules because that leads to people trying to play rules lawyer with them - the idea though is that it's an ad thread. An one-line negative review such as "I tried it and CGen took too long for my tastes so I left" is probably okay, but a 3-page long heated debate on it isn't.

What do you expect to find in an ad thread? Think of that.

The best solution is probably what several people have already suggested; one post, editable by the game's staff/owner with links to other posts in the MC or Hog Pit categories. The one thing I'd miss then is the chance for folks to ask quick questions directly ("are FCs more powerful than OCs?", "do you allow custom Bloodlines?", etc) to gauge if the game is right for them.

Not sure tempting people into signing up for the Hog Pit to get the gist of a specific discussion is an entirely stellar idea, but that's just my two cents. Not that I'm saying every negative comment will wind up in the Hog Pit as opposed to the Mildly Constructive thread, but it's the responses that make up a thread's designation; plenty of perfectly civil and constructive things are said in the Hog Pit every day because that's just where the conversation is.

      @thenomain
To the best of my understanding, civil commentary is fine but anything that turns into a conversation/debate should go to Mildly Constructive or the Hog Pit depending on the tone of the response. Bonus points if people display some level of tone-awareness and can plant their response in the correct place without it needing to be moved in the first place, but Rome, unlike my new local McDonald's, was not built in a day.

I'd argue coworkers should know what their coworkers make, especially in fields where pay is negotiated.

I'd argue that this as well, and in general.

Conventional MBA wisdom says that you should not discuss pay. This is because you don't want co-workers to be jealous of one another. However, this is also how corporations get away with disparate pay rates.

Conventional M.Sc. in Economics wisdom says that you should always discuss pay. This is because all labor should be making the same wages in order to properly apportion costs. However, if you do this, you cannot cut costs by providing minorities or women lower pay rates, thus giving greater profits to higher-ups.

      See how this shit goes?

People need to talk about their pay rates because it is absolutely unfair that Sally does the same work as, but receives less pay than, Sam.

This happened at my job not too long ago. As part of their 'Great Place to Work!' initiative, they raised the starting pay for my department. Well, that starting pay they were offering was more than what some people that'd been there over a year were making, and we only found out because one of the new hires off-hand mentioned it. Word got to HR and they were quick to announce that everyone was getting a raise accordingly, but if you don't talk about these things, anyone/everyone can be screwed.

Far be it from me to discourage name-calling and shade-throwing, but I think calling a group of staffers the sexually frustrated rejects from some other game in their own ad thread is one of those things where common sense might tell you that's going to get moved.

If you want to voice a complaint in an ad thread there are informative, non-biased ways to do so. Every opinion won't be a 5-star review but they can at least strive to be civil. And no amount of unbiased moderation is going to please 100% of everyone 100% of the time; there's a level of human error allowed when judging what can stay, what has to move, and when to step in.

So be sure to do your best, MSB administration, you don't want this thread to have to move into the Hog Pit - entertaining as the thought may be.

    • RE: Meanest (But Funniest) Thing You've Done in a Game

Got naked, rolled on her stomach, looked back and said 'Kiss me.' all demanding-like. He kissed my character's shoulders, got an impatient look for his efforts. Kissed down her spine; her back arched - better. He finally kisses her ass cheek and that's what I'd been waiting for. Rolled over, pulled on a robe, and told him she was merely interested in seeing if his actual ass-kissing was more interesting than his repeated attempts to do so publicly for favor. It was not, and he was dismissed.

Never pestered me trying to suck up and put others down to make himself look good again. Maybe he learned a lesson, maybe I just pissed him off. Doesn't matter, I thought myself very clever and laughed about it for days. I'm still laughing now and it's been years. Where does the time go.

I'm so glad you followed up on the referral and didn't just take the hospital's word for it, you'd think with her history there wouldn't be any 'oh it's probably just a cyst' nonsense. I don't know if you're in the US or not, but I do hate how here they waver between going all out to bilk your insurance & doing almost-nothing re: tests for fear of costs.

Send our hopes along with those scans that it is not cancer; and I'm not much of a sappy person but I feel legitimately crap that you're hurting over something you can only experience from the sidelines, much as I'm sure you want to do something.

Well first and foremost I want to say I hope they're wrong and that she has not, in fact, developed ovarian cancer. That said, even a preemptive diagnosis like that is terrible and I'm sorry the two of you are having to go through that. I hate when cancer survivors are called fighters (as if the ones that didn't make it somehow weren't) but she is a survivor & here's high hopes for that to remain true for long into the future.

So, I pay the £6 or whatever it is to email an immigration specialist back in June to ask a simple question. They don't respond, and then 5 days later I get an email survey thanking me for using the service and asking for my feedback. I low-score them like crazy and comment that no one ever responded. So they apologize and respond with the simple answer to my simple question. (It was, in fact, a Yes or No question).

Now it's July, I've had my bio-metrics appointment, I've forked over the thousands upon thousands of dollars required for this whole process, and it turns out that 'Yes' or 'No' question I paid 6 quid for was answered INCORRECTLY and may delay my visa by up to 6 weeks. I'll find out on Monday if there's a workaround but I'm just about ready to lose the cool I already do not have.

I'm bored of all this now and so all of you should be bored, also.

@surreality I double-dog-dare you to sigh deeply, shrug about the futility of convincing people that they are wrong on MSB, and change the subject. You don't have to prove anything, we have heard your point and some agree, some disagree, and thus sums up the internet.
