@Seamus That also sounds similar to the basis of the Wild Cards setting, IIRC.

Yeah. It has a LOT in common. I had not been aware of WildCards at the time. I was basing it solely on the "Jumpstart" from Malibu comics.

    • Prototart's Super Brief Char List

      HeroMUX: Claire Voyant, Fairchild
UH: Claire Voyant, Fairchild, Illyana (edit - I was also Ladytron but I never finished her)

I haven't exactly played a ton of places in the past, like, decade

I was I think the second Fairchild on HM? There was somebody who was n52 (geneticist/shapeshifter/whatever) and then I did the Wildstorm one

But Id totally love to hear from the Freefall from HMUX like ... 4-ish? years ago, tho

    • RE: X-Men Game

There are places you can do Year One whatever, like, I know for a fact at least one new place is gonna be opening where some of the worst offenders from UH aren't allowed (and no it's not a revenge game or anything it's p clearly been in the works for a couple months)

But there apparently hasn't been anywhere that's "yeah it's this plus this and cutoff is like this except this" for idk apparently over a decade? Like there's nowhere I can find where you can do anything close to modern comic stuff without making a giant amount of changes to fit in with year one crossover or just, like, rely on staff not paying enough attention to notice you changed nothing

So tbh it's kind of disheartening to see stuff go so super fast from "I wish there was something different" to "yeah but itd be great if it were the same tho"

    • RE: Let's talk about TS.

comic places tend to have a super (oh ho) negative view of TS in an i guess aggregate kind of sense

and, like, the reasons are i guess sort of understandable- it's maybe hard to be positive about e-bangs when you're in a room of like 6 people out of character grinding on each other and super badly pretending to be women to the degree it's basically lesbian-face

but like in terms of That World stuff you're dealing with people who basically just as a rule have totally perfect bodies and wear painted on outfits and by and large have a ton of like ultra weird emotional issues that compel them to be ultra obsessive about their bodies

so idk i never really got why anybody would figure super-people wouldn't fuck like athletes in an olympic village

i dunno that's the closest i can come to constructive contribution right after work

    • RE: MSB, SJW, and other acronyms

Unless somebody is like actually directly intentionally attacking somebody - which is more an issue of harassment than speech I think - then usually Im p securely on the side that it's better to just let them say all of their stupid gross bullshit and expose themselves to ridicule and their ideas to being torn apart by people who, like, live in reality and aren't in terror of the lizard jews at the center of the still somehow flat earth

IMO when you just refuse to let somebody speak even when its noxious ridiculous bullshit I think you run a risk of letting them scream "see people ar censoring me for telling the truth" w just enough of a hint of an air of legitimacy that stupid people will sometimes fall for it

      and then you get breitbart

@arkandel It comes with another caveat: 'the process of social admonishment' == 'popularity contest'.

Right and wrong are very rarely determinative; 'how many friends you can rally to all scream at the same person at once or attack them', on the other hand, frequently does.

with everything i said, yeah also this is v unfortunately often still the case

@gangofdolls said in criticism not allowed in ad threads is only enforcing a false positive, prove me wrong:

This board exists to call out bad behavior of which there is plenty, possibly too much in this hobby because all of the shit that goes on thrives in darkness and disconnection. So, it's shitposting. It's shitposting for an ultimately good cause even if it has to set shit on fire to clear the weeds out.

10000% yes times a million at its best every incarnation of this place was or was supposed to be about outing creeps and assholes and abusers and actions that make it harder to do that limit or lessen its value imo

@surreality said in When To Stop Listening To Those Voices:

@Kanye-Qwest ...at least, thankfully, with few exceptions (eta: I'm thinkin' Vault Girl and Elsa here), we haven't seen much of this since happening in the hobby since the 90s, either. So I'm all for leaving the term and what it represented in the rear view, and am glad things are moving in that direction on the whole

alternately maybe it's as bad as it's always been but just there are less people willing to complain about it and the community's no longer as receptive to having bad behavior exposed

And that's ignoring just, the usual social maladaptive shit that's so common on games that it's just taken for granted, the people who have no idea how to interact with anyone who isn't broken the same way they are and the way that geek social fallacies are like burned into the fabric of everything and not to be questioned

I’m going to say this in a non-repulsive way in response.

If you think you can avoid MUSH maladaptive behaviors in real life, you are either tremendously naive or stupidly optimistic. You might as well admit that you live in a box if you can honestly and introspectively believe that real life is any less dysfunctional.

it's a wildly different kind of maladaptive, it's one there's no financial incentive to put up with, and it's one that's so engrained and so tolerated that you get sneered at for even questioning it

to people who come from traditional geek milieus maybe a lot of it's shit that mostly goes unnoticed or they're just like completely inured to, but for people who don't it's this white hot flame that drives you slowly insane or sends you to the door,

i did not invite people from my church group or my whatever, my gender studies class, i invited people i work with. so i invited strippers, waitresses, bartenders, bouncers/security guys, go back like a billion years to when I had a social life and you can add a couple of people from the goth/fetish scene

literally nobody ever lasted longer than I think six months at the absolute longest

I think the last few posts are just evidence enough I need to completely retire from trying to run a Mu. No matter how clear I try to be in the type of Mu I'm after, something is lost in translation. I'm the sticky wicket. Just for benefit of runners and players alike, communication requires two parties, whole blame cannot reside on the runner; most of the communication problem is the static in the middle between type of game trying to be run and expectations of players.

i should maybe specify that when i say what i've said i'm almost exclusively talking about comic games, a niche where successful and well populated games have been run by actual rl rapists and actual rl child molesters who were openly known to be actual rl rapists and actual rl child molesters

edit: and honestly, "Well, The Centrist Position" in the experience of literally every person I've ever tried to get to play one is something that'd ring the same as like "well he did shit on your rug but you put it in the room and that's the only reason he could do that so really youre both to blame :)"

like - HeroMUX had 100+ logins and the only priority of the head wiz was finding ways to protect his shitty friends who did nothing but be shitty no matter how many people on staff who gave a shit it ran off, UH is still around & still run by an incel sex pest w a harem fetish, moritz ran a ton of huge games despite creeping on anyone he found out was a teenage girl, there was a game where two people who were staffers everywhere at one point fucking started inviting me to visit them when they found out I was in my mid teens and bi, it's an endless catalogue and i can list on like one hand the places ive even HEARD of in doing this for literally two thirds of my life that weren't run by incels, predators, hypocrites, violent narcissists, people who didnt have a grasp on, like, even the basic fundamentals of how to convey anything at all to a human, or - fuck, literally all of the above at once

So a couple quick comments, first I want to echo @faraday with her comment of:

Tech is not the only answer, but I wholeheartedly believe it is an important part of the solution.

I think we should remember that tons of people aren't RPing in google docs, or an MMO client or some random chatroom or something because they think it's the best format for roleplay. It's just easy and accessible.

there are also a lot of ppl who do that not because like they haven't heard the Good News about MUs but bc they once MUd and find those options limited as they are in a ton of ways to still be hugely preferable to dealing w MU culture

like, I basically agree w your points but I think it's important to realize that an environment that's "safe" by the standard of some ppl in this field is still going to be something that just, has a magnetic repulsion to a ton of normal people and i think people are so tunnel vision on what's become acceptable in MU culture that they fail to consider how insane it is to people who aren't in that milieu and when it gets brought up it usually just provokes sneering and gatekeeping when it gets acknowledged at all

which just, leads to ppl rping in google docs and discord while others wonders why everybody on one MU are the same guys who've been on like every single other one since 1990-whatever

      @Bad-at-Lurking said in Embracing Rejection:

When the rejection makes sense and doesn't feel arbitrary, I'm fine with it. But with no offense intended to staffers out there, sometimes people get very, very micro-managerial about other people's creative process.

there's also consistency, which is something that's ultra important and basically just non existent some places

like, depending on who you're friends w or NOT friends w and what char you're going for, sentry might get away w "Sentry literally possesses the power of one million exploding suns." as his entire power trait but paste pot pete is gonna get rejected for not having paid enough attention in organic chem to give a detailed write up of the molecular peculiarities of his glue gun adhesive

if you wanna go, like, BnB detail required across the board then thats fine but its just totally nuts when theres no standard actually being upheld
