y underwear model grade cute. Today, I stopped giving a shit about this fact. You KNOW it's gotta be bad when that happens.
"Yeah, you need to go to the oral surgeon. We can't fix this. Or do anything, actually. That'll be $275, though."The new dentist that I went to in the fall pulled a similar stunt.
Things started out fine. They offered me a $99 "new customer" special which included a complete checkup and x-rays. After the checkup I met with some lady in her office. Not sure what her job title was exactly, but anyway, she whips out a work order detailing all of the things they wanted to do in my mouth. $3998 worth of things. I was like "No, thanks, just here to get this lost filling replaced". For the next half hour she did her best to convince me that I absolutely had to have this work done ASAP. "We could finance it if cost is an issue", she explained, shoving yet another form in my face. "No thanks." I said. "Did you know that oral problems can lead to a stroke if left untreated?" She seemed genuinely concerned. At that point I stood up, said "We're done here" and walked back out to the waiting room.
My dentist finally called me in after a half-hour wait. She told me that since I had checked the box that asked if I was nervous about going to the dentist, she felt that I should see a specialist. I just stared at her as she handed me the bill. I took it and said "Thanks for wasting my time and money."
When it was all said and done, I ended up paying $275 to an out-of-network oral surgeon, on top of the $99 that I had paid the first dentist.
And people wonder why I hate dentists.

Peeve du jour: customers who sing out loud and off-key to whatever I'm playing on the radio at work, who get mad when I turn the radio off >.<

RE: Real World Peeves, Disgruntlement, and Irks.
Working with other people always sucks. This is one of the reasons that I have kept my crappy retail job for as long as I have (since 2007) and haven't tried to find something better.
There are 5 employees where I work, I am the general manager. There are only 1 or 2 people on at a time so half the time I am here by myself. The rest of the time, I am working with one of the three girls who have been with me for years or the new part-time guy (technically also one of the "girls" :p) We rarely ever argue. We don't take each other's stuff. No one goes into my office when I am not there. No one is in a secret competition to win favor with the boss, or trying to set someone else up to take the fall because they aren't doing their job. I never dread going in to work because I might have to work with someone that I don't like.
The cost of this peace of mind? I am salary-capped at $58k, which isn't a lot considering that I live in the glorious People's Republic of Maryland, where the cost of living is so ridiculously high that there is a 5+ year waiting list for subsidized housing.
I've convinced myself that it's been a worthwhile tradeoff.
I'm certain that if I were in your shoes, I would have quit already, and would probably have burned a lot of bridges on my way out.

nally went 'fuck it' and sunk the money into a professional redoing my resume for me when my tax refund came in. Because I know I'm just not good at the jargon and self-bragging required in resumes. I've only been sending it out there for a few days, so I gotta give it time. For the past couple years, I've been averaging a few interviews a quarter, but never the JOB itself.
So hWhoa, you have your tax refund already? I'm still waiting for my 1095-A

RE: AnomJobs - Trouble With Installation
TinyMUX is not dead, but should you use it for your new MU* projects? Maybe? These are my general recommendations:
If you're looking to make a WoD game and you either cannot (or just don't want to) code it all yourself, then you're going to want to use MUX because that's what nearly all of of the existing body of available WoD code was written for. As a non-coder, you simply won't care about the features that MUX lacks.
If you're an experienced coder and don't mind doing a bit of extra work porting stuff, consider going with Rhost instead. Rhost is nearly completely compatible (I'd say 95-96%) with MUX while at the same time offering a bunch of really nice features that your coders will thank you for. It's still being actively developed, and if you run into any problems, you can stop by the Rhost Development MUSH and talk directly to the developers. Ash is very approachable and is always willing to help.
For anything else, I recommend PennMUSH, simply because this is the platform with the most available code, including several starter DBs (such as Faraday's and Volund's) that'll give you a mostly complete game right out of the box. It's also the platform of choice if you intend to add hardcoded systems such as Hspace or Aspace to your game, or if you intend to make use of @grapenut's excellent websocket addon. Penn is still being actively development, and getting help can be as easy as logging on to MUS*H and asking.

@RnMissionRun What might you recommend instead, on TinyMUX? It looks like it has stuff everyone needs, some of which (aJobs) is a serious pain in the behind.
Unless you meant using Rhost, and then, yes, I know there's a starter pack or whatever there that's nice.
If it was me doing it and I absolutely had to have MUX (or at least, a MUX-like), I'd be running MUXcore on Rhost with all of the MUX compatibility settings enabled, with the Rhost version of Jobs.
-
RE: AnomJobs - Trouble With Installation
I dunno, MUXcore is pretty old now. That didn't stop me from porting it to Rhost, but I can't see myself using it as the starter db for a new game, either.

RE: [Request] Dahan's D6 System for TinyMUX
If this is for a new game, why not use PennMUSH instead of MUX? It's more modern, is better supported, and is still being actively developed.
-
RE: [Request] Dahan's D6 System for TinyMUX
@highfalutin Does that code actually work? I thought that only characters could receive the WIZARD flag on MUX and that other object types needed to be Wiz-owned and set INHERIT instead.

There really is no describing how dysfunctionally great that feeling is when you stand up and your pants hit your ankles.
That happens to me all the time, only it's not because I am so skinny, it's because I have no butt and I hate wearing belts

So I am going to be in Phoenix Arizona for most of a week in late February thanks to my new job. I will be busy with work and being jetlagged but will probably have some time to explore, can anyone recommend anything particularly interesting, things to see or do?
Yes, see Las Vegas!

RE: Want To Move to Austin?
Craig's list works, just be prepared to do a lot of uhhh filtering of applicants (eg I once had a family of 4 try to move into the small bedroom I was trying to rent out in my house, and they did not want to take "no" for an answer).

RE: RL things I love
I have two Lenovo laptops, an ancient T-430 that I bought refurbished from Amazon for around $350, and a year-old Yoga 720 that I bought from Best Buy for $900 last winter (it was an open box special). They are both excellent machines that I would not hesitate to purchase again. If the one that you just bought is of a similar quality, you should be quite happy with it.

I miss Potato.
I miss dual input windows.
I miss nested spawns.Sigh.
POTATO Y U BREAK IN OSX?!?!
Potato works fine with macOS, the problem is the system TCL/TK that comes with the OS. Use macPorts or a similar package manager to install up-to-date versions of TCL and TK. Download the Potato source (not the macOS binary, which is linked against the problematic system libs), unzip it, then launch the app via the main.tcl script.

RE: Ruins of Pern - Discussion
The White Dragon > DragonQuest > DragonFlight > All the Weyrs of Pern > All Others.
The first one that I ever read was DragonSong (my high school library had a copy of that but none of the rest of the series). I liked it so much that I had to track down the others at the public library.
