@mietze A lot of states are seriously relaxing their qualifications, but that's still state by state, yeah.

@Seamus The flu is only more lethal if you're considering lethality on the basis of overall deaths and ignoring the relative speed of infection. However, that entirely ignores the differences in rates of deaths to infection; by that standard, COVID-19 is considerably more lethal. Yes, it doesn't have high rates of infection that the flu has built over many, many decades. However, its spread right now is clearly at a much higher rate. Our healthcare systems are very used to handling the flu. I'm sure that flu season isn't fun or easy for medical professionals and those in the healthcare industry to handle, but it's very clearly different from what they're dealing with right now. The death rates in Italy are in part because their healthcare system is overloaded. It's not just about the virus itself, it's about not having the infrastructure in place to handle the rate of infection that's happening. Choices are being made about who to let die because there aren't enough doctors, nurses, and supplies to keep the number of survivors where they could be if everything else where equal.

I don't know what else to say. The flu is a serious constant that people absolutely forget how deadly it is. But, at this point in our battle with it, it no longer causes the sort of overwhelming of healthcare that COVID-19 is doing right now. And that's the real danger.

@L-B-Heuschkel said in A bit of trouble on Firefly:

I'm guessing it largely has to do with showing dominance, though. "Look, I just forced you into a sexual situation whether you liked it or not."

Ding ding ding. Sexual harassment is always about power.

@silverfox Don't think of that as a choice that you're making. You have a bedtime, which most working adults do, and that's when your availability falls into. Thinking of this as just a choice you're making implies that we shouldn't think of our sleep as part of our schedules when it comes to RP availability, which is a recipe for burnout.

ETA: And I say that as someone who had to seriously adjust her availability after starting a new job in the fall, and I very much understand the frustration of not being able to stay up late anymore for RP stuff. 😞

@WildBaboons Yeah, my impression is that his focus tends to be on targeting women, but men can get some attention by being the authority figures who deprive him of that.

I tend to find it less than helpful to spin predatory behavior as something that's somehow just reflexive or the product of mental illness. His mental state is between him and whatever mental health professionals he might engage.

His behavior is purposefully predatory, full stop.

He has stalked the RL-facing social media of game runners on at least one occasion after he was banned from the game, IIRC. (Along with, of course, his targets of harassment.)

@bear_necessities Oh, gross, that guy? Literal harasser/stalker guy? Gtfo.

I feel like the appropriate response to him threatening to post on MSB is "lol sounds like fun drama."

    • RE: A Lack of Imagination

I remember some things very well. The way I sort of collect knowledge in a mental repository on Arx can also be reflected in my work, which is a good skill to have.

I don't visualize stuff habitually almost ever, but I can? Like, if I consciously attempt, I can visualize an apple, sure. I was actually just driving home listening to Quadrophenia in the car and visualizing how GREAT A STAGE MUSICAL IT WOULD MAKE and how I would design it and shit, so I'm definitely not incapable. But I don't generally visualize, like, RP scenes as they're happening for the most part. I'm somewhere in the middle of that -- apple scale or whatever.

I don't have the voice in my head, though. Like, the idea of that is honestly HUGELY WEIRD for me to consider. WHY DO YOU HAVE AN INTERNAL NARRATOR?! My thought process all feels a lot more abstract. Like, feelings and impressions and such.

    • RE: Atlantis client help - how do I get the left sidebar back?

This is a known bug currently, yeah. From Pax's pinned post on the Discord:

If the bug in the Brockerhoff split view library that crops up under Catalina affects you and your sidebar vanishes, and you cannot make it expand back out to visibility, there's a quick (but somewhat esoteric) way to fix it via Apple's preference configuration utility.

      1. Quit Atlantis
      2. Open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app
      3. Type defaults read net.riverdark.Atlantis | grep 'RBSplitView V' - you should see one (or more) lines that are like "RBSplitView V lemuria_main" or "RBSplitView V lemuria_window:<some number>" and each will show it as being some esoteric value.
      4. Find the line from the previous step that has a negative number in it, such as "RBSplitView V lemuria_main" = "2 -17.5248 922"
      5. Change the negative number to a positive one, preferably larger than 140. For instance, defaults write net.riverdark.Atlantis "RBSplitView V lemuria_main" -string "2 200 922"
      6. Type defaults read net.riverdark.Atlantis | grep 'RBSplitView V' again to make sure the change took.
      7. Restart Atlantis. Your sidebar should have returned!

      Yay!
