I've seen the coin to get a cart thing in the US, but rarely. And actually the one that comes to mind first is Aldi, which isn't an American company, so I assume is probably just bringing over standards from Europe.

RE: Why are there so many MUs set in Maine?
I built a grid for an NYC game I staffed once but I was living in NYC at the time, so that helped.

RE: A Regency MU (Conceptual)
See, I read the comments about the commoner alts more from a game design standpoint, like, "Is this something you want to open up on the game when they're not designed to be able to engage with the main story of the game," not that people were leaping to play commoners. The question of "What character types do we allow and encourage" is pretty fundamental, and it's a fair for people to ask the wisdom of allowing character types that aren't going to be allowed to engage in the central story, because I imagine we've all played on games where something like that has been the case but there's still been friction with players wanting to pick up those types and still feel central, etc. It was just a question of game focus.

It also looked to me that at least one of those exchanges was just a plain miscommunication, because I ASSUME that when Auspice said that gambling halls would be "populated" by commoner alts, that meant more like the staff? Not that the ton wouldn't be able to go to them. But I think Pyre was confused at the perceived idea that the ton wouldn't be allowed there since that would be a common way of socializing. But also maybe I am assuming incorrectly.

I also read excitement and interest from Pyre's questions and just trying to suss out the lines between history and fantasy, but maybe that's because I'm familiar enough with her manner to recognize her interest.

@insomniac7809 I only regret that I have but one upvote to give.

RE: General Video Game Thread
I think of "minor bugs" as ones that are noticeable but don't significantly impact a player's ability to play the game. The things described by many players sound like they significantly impact their ability to play the game.

RE: General Video Game Thread
@auspice said in General Video Game Thread:
I think there are two big reasons it had bugs and it all comes down to 'people are shitty'.
CDPR employees were receiving death threats, regularly, after the game was delayed. Lots of them. Some of them with very specific details of home addresses and the like.
I imagine their management was very afraid to delay a second time. I forgive the bugs on that alone.
I get there's been a huge amount of CDPR apologism from gamers because of a belief that they're somehow an ethical step above other video game companies, but "we had to put you through shitty crunch conditions for months for your own safety" is definitely a take.

RE: General Video Game Thread
I haven't started Cyberpunk yet, and I'm certainly happy for the people who have been loving it, but the idea that it should be fine to ship a product with this amount of bugs because "no one releases a bug free product day one" is -- well, basically just consumers being trained that it's somehow unreasonable to expect products that work when they're released. It's a corporate lie. Yes, bugs are probably inevitable, but there are levels here. If people are dealing with crashes daily, that shouldn't be considered a finished product.
But the critical response has clearly been pretty gentle on the bugs, because it's sitting high and pretty on Metacritic. I'm probably just gonna wait for a few more patches before starting, but I'm also not a huge fan of the genre in general that I'm sitting on any particular urge to immediately play. I got it mostly because of how much I loved Witcher 3.

RE: Things Coded in Firan
@mietze Maybe Haven? I've definitely heard about weird stuff regarding attractiveness and menstrual cycles from there.

RE: Things Coded in Firan
I never played Firan, but I know there was horse breeding genetics code because one of of the wizzes from a game I played (Second Pass) was the one who coded it.

@Ganymede Take care of yourself and get better soon. So sorry to hear about this.

RE: Virtual table-top
@Arkandel Personally I know I'd have a terrible time doing tabletop -- or at least tabletop like D&D -- without some visual functionality, because D&D has a strong component with physical distances as a core component of how the system works. But that's a very YMMV issue, because other players will be different!

RE: Virtual table-top
@Testament Yeah, that's a very good point. It's got a lot of cool effects it can do, but I've also seen some people with potato internet or potato computers struggle. So it'll depend on what people are using.
