Uematsu and Mitsuda drew heavily from classical, romantic and baroque techniques in writing their music, and brought a minimalist feel to it. Those who liked their work - particularly on the SNES - might find themselves fans of Ludovico Einaudi's piano work. There is something about intentional musical minimalism that is stirring, and when they moved on to CD formats and more complicated music, some of that charm faded quite quickly (though Mitsuda's work in Xenosaga is still gorgeous - the Gnosis theme was one I played on repeat a lot in my teen years).

Those were also the days when OCRemix and VGTunes (I think that was the name, but it has been so long) were a force in fandom. Things like Terra in Black were what actually got me into metal, and you can hear the minimalism and romantic influences clearly in this cover. It's very simplistic - but it's very good.

Other honorable mentions are the main and battle themes from FFIV, Cyan's theme... I think I'm going on a nostalgia run tonight.

So, Black Mirror. I'm a huge fan of it in general - Season 4 was fairly weak for me, though it had its bright spots that need to be recognized, and while Bandersnatch was not everyone's cup of tea, I really thought it was a unique breakthrough in what can be done with interactive media and I think there is a line between film and video game that is blurring, and it was great to see film's first major approach in finding the common ground there.

I'm starting on season 5 now, and I think episode 1 is absolutely a critical thing for roleplayers to see. It spoke to me deeply.

***=hey hey we got spoilers here***

There are a few things that spoke to me deeply, that are elements of everyday life in this hobby that I don't ever see addressed in the media. From cross-gender play and sexual experiences to the bonds that can form between people as characters that might not even make it to the real world, to the importance of fantasy in excitement and passion, issues of roleplaying overtaking reality and affecting our daily lives, to understanding and accepting a degree of openness in our relationships in order to meet basic needs.

With the VR theme of the episode, this was presented as a future issue, but these are things that have been very active and very important in my life and ones I have seen pop up again and again among MU*ers. I really felt like this episode did a good job of shining the spotlight on them, and showing both the good and bad sides. You take a look at the game world created and it's a lot like any game where the theme has fallen aside in favor of sexual shenanigans.

It was eerie. It was good to see. It's important as more and more people will be drawn into experiences like ours.

Lucifer's been renewed for a fifth (and final) season. So, they'll have a chance to end the story the way they want, rather than leaving it on a cliffhanger when it doesn't get renewed at some point.

It's smart. They already had to save it once.

Lucifer was always slated to be a 5 year run, so they are just getting to finish it up like they always had intended to do.

I have a single word to say to that:

      Supernatural.

I firmly believe Supernatural is a five season show with some really terrible fanfiction spinoff that came immediately after. Reality may say otherwise, but my version is better.

Watching players make terrible, terrible choices that are going to send everything into a complete tailspin, even though they should rationally know better (and in many cases do).

If everyone is perfect all the time, the story is far less interesting, but hey - we live in interesting times.

Having had someone just burst into a room a friend and I were working through and immediately eat a slice of pie, broadcasting the hint to the whole room -

Please give us an option to make private rooms that other people can't join in future things like this.

Overall, loving it, we're just going to back out and get back to where we were later.

I really don't feel like Dany is mad. I feel like she's pissed, and that it's a deliberately cruel act that is half out of revenge and half out of feeling like the only way she will ever solidify her rule is if she crushes her opposition totally and completely - otherwise, the Sons of the Harpy, Westeros Edition, will spring up.

Fear and Love, the Machiavellian dichotomy is what we saw. She chose fear.

They were pretty explicit about this - she has always been willing to go /hard/ if she thought it was the right time.

@Ghost said in Game of Thrones:

      1. Dany has ruled with fear and violence ever since the dragons hatched. The mother of dragons was a dragon; a Targaryen. She has rarely been merciful and the center of her own world. Did she really become a villain, or was she always a villain that the viewer simply had sympathy for?

Oh yeah, like, I don't think they're really doing a GOOD JOB of this final season in general, but the upswell of sentiment that this came totally out of left field for Daenerys is...not correct. You're absolutely right that she's been a conquerer ruling with fear and violence for seasons now. Generally it's just that it's been a bit more contained and directed at people we want to die. But she's been a "I will end all tyranny!" tyrant for a while now.

It goes even beyond this, and it was a callback from Tyrion that I think really set in Dany what she needed to do in order to win. Fire and blood are the words of her House, and tonight we saw plenty of both - but the reminder about Meereen set her on this course. Yes, Meereen opened its gates to her and surrendered, and King's Landing did too. But think about how many problems she had actually ruling over and controlling the city after that point, thanks to the wealth, thanks to her mercy being seen as weakness.

She wasn't about to make that mistake again.

It's probably not coincidence that dracarys can be translated as "BURN THEM ALL!" There are some interesting questions about what this means for Aerys's descent into madness, but that echo is a beautiful thing to me.

Who is he? Like, who the person was that became him?

Pretty sure that's meant to remain a mystery and be unanswered. Not every last detail needs to be spelled out explicitly, though I do love the hints that he might have once been a Stark - a poetic justice to it. I'm also fine if he was just Some Guy, but he was made the Night King at the same spot he died which was Winterfell.

What he definitely was and what we have had confirmed is that he was a weapon created by the Children of the Forest to try to stop humanity from expanding into their territory. He is essentially biological warfare, the undead an agent spreading a contaminant that kills more and more humans over time. He's driven by magic, and that's why all he wants is death. Extinction. Genocide. Then he fell out of their control, they realized they fucked up, and - well, everything else. It's pretty classic gray goo scenario stuff.

He wants to kill everything because it's literally the only reason he exists. He's a weapon.

I'm curious what else you wanted from a climactic battle sequence, in terms of lore payoff? We got resolution of a lot of threads last night, from Melisandre's prophecies to Theon's redemption. It didn't feel like there needed to be anything more - this was the moment everything crashed together.

Like I'm genuinely a bit baffled by the criticism that an episode that necessarily focused on action was too focused on action.

@Aria Hey so, this is unfortunate that this is the case, but we went through the episode and couldn't see shit, and then turned the brightness on the TV way up and went back and ... Oh my god, it's entirely different. There is a ton of detail and you can even track the flow of battle.

Just. Normal brightness you won't see a thing.

Having some stupid quirk that makes cilantro taste like soap, and everyone around me talks about how good it is. And then finding it is in my peanut sauce enough to ruin it. Blech.

This is a genetic thing. I always feel sorry for the people who have it - including my mom - because cilantro is so delicious to me and there is literally nothing you can do to get used to the flavor. You just have to deal with the fact that the rest of the world loves slimy soap.
