RE: Learning Ruby for Ares
@Snackness Since Udemy is having like a 95% off sale I got the Udemy course for $10 lol.
But I'll keep that in mind about Lynda, very useful!

RE: Learning Ruby for Ares
These are all very helpful things! So I have a good start.
That Udemy course looks pretty good and is on sale. I might poke at that.

Learning Ruby for Ares
What's the best approach to learn Ruby for Ares, preferably while actively constructing the game itself?

RE: Health and Wealth and GrownUp Stuff
Just as an update, I'm currently getting my house together a bit more. I'm repairing things after my parents neglected it and hoarded things for so long. The cleaning bill for their hoarding was like $2000+, but it was worth it.
My bedroom studio setup is almost done. The "completed" (hahahaha) setup will have these things from this board I made: https://www.pinterest.com/DuanSparkles/my-music-setup/
I have roughly half those things already, but I'm chugging along.
I'm doing a little bit of freelancing. It's not the most reliable thing but it gives me a little money every now and then. My current projects are a Mutants & Masterminds book for Green Ronin, and a Pathfinder book for Paizo.
Oh and if you're curious about anything I've done in the past, I was one of the freelancers on this book: https://paizo.com/products/btpy9vmf?Aethera-Campaign-Setting

Arx Alts
Hello! I know that we all have our playlists and such, but I figured that anyone who feels comfortable could congregate around who is on Arx, due to it being a fucking labyrinth, in a dedicated thread. The purpose being that if we happen to know each other from the past, we can check each other's playlists and have good times and such!
Anyway, on Arx I'm Theo and Gawain!

RE: Original Arx Isabeau
UPDATE: Apparently all this time I was thinking of Sophie, and just kind of forgot that Beaumont had a second sister. So apparently who I'm actually looking for is 2016 Sophie lol.

RE: Original Arx Isabeau
The only solution is that there's a third Isabeau.

RE: The ethics of IC romance, TS, etc
@L-B-Heuschkel When I was 13 I got catfished by a 10 year old pretending to be 12.
I broke things off and she started sending very long messages about how much she loves and misses me and all of this stuff >__<.
These were the AOL days. I still know her and am not allowed to ever bring it up to her lol.

RE: The ethics of IC romance, TS, etc
Which parts of being in IC relationships, be they romantic and/or sexual or even otherwise, bind the players as well as the characters? For example...
- If your PC is going to cheat IC on another character do you feel obligated to let your partner's player know?
I would let them know because I myself have had some incredibly bad experiences with this. And some people have had to deal with toxic players in the past who build expectations and then break them because it's "IC". It can make a lot of people have a lot of sensitive feelings regarding this, so I see it as a common courtesy to communicate. But RP should involve plenty of communication even beyond this anyway.
- Do you think you are responsible for a character whose roleplay is related to yours if your paths are to separate? In other words do you feel guilty someone else's PC might become quote/unquote unplayable because of your IC choices?
Obviously, because I'm not a dick and RP is about multiple people having fun, not just me.
- Very closely related to the above, what if the choice that takes a PC mostly off the table is OOC? For instance if you stop being active on my PC's spouse to play an alt with Theno's PC. Do I have the moral high ground to get pissed off?
That is kind of a line. If I get tired of playing a particular character, I'll communicate that and try my best to work something out to try to alleviate things as possible. But obviously I expect a level of maturity from people I play with. But, additionally, I don't usually enter into relationships with characters played by people I don't feel comfortable playing with, or have good communication with. Meaning, I don't do relationship RP with complete strangers who I haven't had time to feel out.
- When it comes to TS what's the correct way to suggest it? Do you let the RP become more explicit until the big words come out or you get told no? Do you page the other player first and explicitly ask if they want to do it? Something else?
I don't really suggest TS. If a scene is headed in that direction, I page and say "Hey, if you need to fade or anything that's cool, though I'm fine either way". Though if I know someone and we're on the same page on this stuff, and we have a comfortable OOC rapport, I'm perfectly fine being like "Hey let me slam them yams".
- Assuming OOC consent between adult players is there anything in an IC relationship, including TS, that you consider unethical? No, I'm not going to give examples since I'm keeping this classy! But you can.
I mean don't fuck kids I guess. Kind of lowkey weird. I know this will make some of you mad but I said what I said.

RE: Original Arx Isabeau
Nah I never played with the current Isabeau. I think I left Arx in 2016 when I got sick for like 3 months and couldn't play, so didn't wanna char squat. And current Isabeau started playing in October 2016, which is after I left.
edit: I was Chris Hemsworth Beaumont

Original Arx Isabeau
Does she hang out on Mu Soapbox? I was original Beaumont.

RE: The ADD/ADHD Thread (cont'd from Peeves)
Hi remember how annoying I used to be?
It turns out I have severe ADHD.
I mean I also might be on the spectrum I still have to get tested for that.

RE: Serious Question About Making A MU
I'm not completely new to coding as a concept, but I've also never coded anything particularly complicated. Like, if I look at code I can kind of figure out what's going on with it.
That said, I mostly just want a grid, boards, and at best a simple dice type deal just in case people need it. My general MU building philosophy is to build for the kind of players I want, so while I do enjoy a nice combat system, I think a combat system is only something I would add if I genuinely believed it would contribute to the kind of game I'm building. Like, if I was making a Dragon Ball Z game, I would 100% want a combat system.
While what I'm working on is something many would go "That DEFINITELY needs a combat system", I just have a particular mindset for this. I kind of have in mind who all will want to play it, so beyond that it's kind of icing on the cake. I don't even mind if it ends up being a game with like ten players to be honest. The process of making this game is something I'm doing because creatively I just have the burning desire to do it. My vision for it isn't super ambitious or revolutionary, I just think it'll be a fun game to play.
I'm vague on purpose because I don't want to get people hyped up like in my old thread. I'll say something substantial once I'm closer.

RE: Serious Question About Making A MU
Hi! Thanks for all the great advice. I didn't realize people were actually posting in this thread, RIP. But I read everything and I'm going to look into Ares.
I'm not particularly picky about the codebase I use as long as it's convenient and simple.
Since this thread is helpful to some people, I guess keep the topic going if you like!
Once I've made some substantial progress I'll update you.

Serious Question About Making A MU
Okay, so we're a bit separated from my old far too fucking ambitious MU thread. A whole year away from me going through therapy and finding purpose and all that random stuff. So I've been thinking about things, regarding MU creation.
So, let's say that you don't really desire a combat system, or if you had anything, it would probably just be some simple dice for emergencies. This isn't really a part of the question, but this is just saying that combat system isn't a factor in my question at all (I know this isn't a popular idea, but it's my preference for this).
Now, let's say that you write up every single room desc, game file, and pretty much everything in Google docs, and you're like, "Man this is basically a fully formed MU".
What next steps would you take here?

RE: Hello!Project's Playlist
@Salty My primary memory of Edge of Midnight was banging a dragon and those two women who hung out in the square transmuting me into tons of different species.
I probably deserved it.
Also surprised to learn it still exists. Honestly as far as MUDs go, for as ridiculous as the concept was, it had a ton of depth and was a rare RPI MUD.

RE: Hello!Project's Playlist
I updated my list, thus I'm bumping this.

Blue Fairy from Shang
So uhhhh not to be weird or anything but I don't suppose Blue Fairy from Shang circa 2013-2014 happens to be around here?
I was Levian on Shang.

RE: Health and Wealth and GrownUp Stuff
It's me.
I released my first EP (which I am now embarrassed about because creative insecurities). It was a very educational project that pushed my skills forward a lot, but I realized I wasn't entirely being myself. Like, the dubstep type stuff wasn't necessarily bad, but I feel like I was trying to be popular or sound like other people. The best parts of my EP were the parts where I really embraced myself and my uniqueness.
Either way, I'm working on a new project now, and trying to push my compositional skills forward, not being too worried about making dancey songs or whatever (though I do like dancey songs so you never know). I also have a Japanese idol type pop song that sounds like an anime opening coming out soon, that I made for this American duo (it's their first original song).
I got very focused on music and music composition/production, I somewhat stopped pursuing code because it didn't really make me happy. I've also started studying 3D modeling and 3D animation because it's really fun and I want to have a cool visual. 3D is much easier than you'd think, though that might just be due to all the time I spent on Second Life. Also I got into Japanese studies 日本語を勉強しました。
Oddly enough, while doing research for my branding aesthetics, I got super into learning about clowns? But this is a more recent development. Where that will go is still pending.
I spent most of last year going to therapy, both private and various group therapy sessions, spending nearly every weekday doing -some- form of professional therapy. While I still deal with a lot of stuff, I have much better coping mechanisms and levels of control than I used to. My current diagnosis is ADHD, major depression (with psychotic features), PTSD, and generalized anxiety. Many people around me suspect that I'm on the spectrum (primarily old mothers with children on the spectrum), and a few other friends, so gradually I've stopped ignoring this and started actually taking that seriously, which is why I plan to find an ASD specialist soon to diagnose me and see if there's anything to that.
Uhh, in other news I'm also trying to remodel the house a bit. Nothing intense, mostly cleaning up my parents' neglect since they moved out a while ago, then will gradually do little things here and there. And I'm gonna try to raise money for a new music project I want to do but don't have the cash for yet (I need to buy some specific synthesizer plugins).
I guess that's most of the important positive things!
Here's my regularly updated pinterest board that I use for working out my branding aesthetic and also what I give to artists for inspiration when they do commissions and design stuff for my music!
