Tallulah! I remember Tallulah, we had fun (On The Reach). I was Wesley, the dumb guy who was a werewolverine. I really enjoyed RPing with you, I was sad that we lost contact.

RE: Influence/Reputation system?
From what I've seen, since I assume we're talking about WoD, there's nothing inherently wrong with social combat rules. In MU*s, it's treated as optional just like regular combat is. People freeform when they feel comfortable freeforming.
If you want to solve the problem of twinking as far as people avoiding social combat when it's convenient to avoid it, then make it not optional, and regular combat too. Simply say "We are not a freeform game, dice rolls are used for combat and social combat".
Make sure that there are thorough idiot-proof explanations for how social combat works. Don't try to get too fancy with your house rules, just try to thoroughly explain. "This is/isn't mind control. As a guideline, the following things are the following difficulty", etc.
People need to understand the limitations of what social combat can do. They need to understand what it means in the context of their character. And they need to understand that it's something that is used on your game. A lot of people seem to have a problem with social combat because they want an extremely high measure of control of their character in relation to other people's characters.
A lot of people aren't cool with social combat (where dice are involved), because if they fail a roll they think, "Well, my character was outsmarted, but my character would never be outsmarted by this!"
Making social combat mandatory means attempting to create a culture that does not yet actually exist. People within that culture will be from this current one. Some will like it, some won't, or maybe it'll fail entirely. That's the risk you run with trying new things. You can't make everyone happy, you have to find a vision and run with it.
There is no social combat, like, ever, anywhere, that exists, period, that people will magically be alright with. The problem is not the system, but the culture. So, you can address the culture by making it mandatory, clearly explained, and seeing what happens, or you can go in infinite circles wondering "What's wrong with social combat?"

RE: Optional Realities & Project Redshift
@Thenomain I've jumped all over this thread and I just can't make any sense of it. It seems like two groups of people speaking entirely different languages and hoping to be understood
I feel like this would all be solved if everyone just agreed to make a MOO, somewhere in between a MUD and a MUSH.
RPI Hell MOO.

RE: Optional Realities & Project Redshift
This thread seems like a reasonable outcome to MUDders and MUSHers talking and trying to be productive.

RE: Kinds of Mu*s Wanted
SCP - If I ever made a MU*, it would probably be adapted from SCP/MIB/Torchwood/UNIT/Other secret government agency dealing with paranormal stuff themes. WoD can technically work like that, but it's often like pulling teeth to try to app an MiB or SCP style Hunter. Anyone not familiar with SCP: http://www.scp-wiki.net/ (The wiki is the entire thing)
Super Smash Brothers - Yes, I know, it sounds ridiculous. There was actually once a place called Videoland, but I never played on it so this has nothing to do with that. But I find the idea of a bunch of video game characters in some crazy video game universe doing video game stuff to be interesting.
Like, not, "Oh, hey, let's get all of these themes together and do stuff!" No, like, the world physics would be video games. In the Mario world you can hit boxes and get coins and stuff. It'd just be a world where shit just kind of works that way. Outside the Mushroom Kingdom you'd have Hyrule and stuff. Flesh out the politics of the world and run plots, then bam, you have a game.
Batman - Just a Batman game. Not every comic game has to be inclusive of every comic ever. An interesting theme could be that Arkham has been taken over and now it is functionally its own city (If this overlaps with Arkham City, I apologize, I've never gotten to play it, I only have the first game). Like, the people in Arkham function as their own society, which gives villains stuff to do other than go out and be nuts. They can have social. And then there's the rest of Gotham, where you've got Batman and other crazy people willing to put on a suit and fight crime, or you're just a normal person dealing with it all.
Power Rangers - I'm not going to actually describe the MU*, I'm just going to leave this here: http://powerrangers.wikia.com/wiki/Hexagon
World of Darkness: Mad Max - I know that most of you play WoD, so I thought I would propose something for my audience to enjoy. Imagine a World of Darkness where Mages are riding around on magical motorcycles (maybe the wheels are magic), werewolves roam the earth in packs, wild and free! But at night, a huge swarm of bats fly out and then vampires are attack! There could be all sorts of crazy supernatural colonies, vampire politics that revolve around a gas trade, and a world where the Drive skill is actually useful.
Pathfinder: Nine Hells - Seriously, I want a Pathfinder game that takes place in the Nine Hells. I don't even care if it has code, I just want to do RP in the Nine Hells, it's my favorite place. Well, I'm not sure how similar it is to the D&D 3.5 Nine Hells, but I prefer to play Pathfinder (I am working on a book, after all), so I assume their Hell is better. We would play Devils who are promoted through hard work, betrayal, and manipulation.
Robots - I know this is veeery general, but a game with robots. Not Mega Man style robots, are they're more like metal people. But robots who are only questionably people. They get brain upgrades, have crazy sci-fi socio-political interactions, all sorts of nutty body switching and human oppression. This isn't much of a pitch, but I just wanted to let it be known that I want it.

RE: What is a MUSH?
I've never really viewed a code base as determining the overall design philosophy of the game. I've been in MUSHes that have little to nothing to do with each other in terms of design philosophy or culture. I've been in MOOs that have almost nothing to do with the typical MOO, and seem more like the average MUSH.
Typically when I login to a MUCK, they're actually designed to function like MUSHes code-wise, which leads me to wonder why the hell they didn't just make a MUSH to begin with. I've also been in MUCKs that weren't designed to be like MUSHes (IE: Actually playable).
MUDs are all over the place. RPI MUDs tend to be my favorite, on the rare chance that I play one. I had no idea it was used to describe code, as Thenomain explained up there. All I know is that RPI MUDs usually mean it's all RP all the time on the entire grid. But I tend to be way behind on MUD trends and MUD culture in general (Except DBZ MUD culture, which is permanently stagnant).
Also I've found no discernible difference between a MUX and a MUSH, other than a few minor code things.

RE: I Will Give You Advice
@Coin I used Shia LaBeouf as a PB for years. Though I've retired him because the character was a glorified self-insert from my early years.

RE: I Will Give You Advice
@il-volpe Well see, the problem here is that you have to factor in the cost of cigarettes and transportation (Assuming that you don't live near this family, it's rude to charge neighbors for advice). Depending on the state, I would suggest 5 bucks for the act of giving advice, and another 15 if the advice is actually helpful.
You shouldn't smoke, it's bad for you. If you vape I would suggest flavorless vaping, as the flavors can often be harmful to your health.
By the way, I learned from a Truth campaign commercial that hookah is also tobacco, I dodged a bullet there. Though I was in close proximity to a hookah pipe, I'm doing fine now and did not actually touch it.

I Will Give You Advice
I'm tired and bored, so I'll just chill out here in this thread and give people advice, or answer general questions related to anything.
I am an expert at life. Proceed.
