Back in the midst of the Lockdown, I had a strange fit of nostalgia and decided to go back and play on one of the old RPI MUDs I used to enjoy. I made a relatively quick and simple character and was lucky enough to get in the game within about two or three hours.

What I had not remembered was how difficult it was to find RP on those placesโ€”no OOC communication to organise RP, no +where command. You had to either linger in one spot hoping somebody would cross your path or wander the grid until you found someone and then try and fabricate a reason to be there. I used to enjoy it years ago, but now it was positively nightmarish.

I think the beauty of a MUSH is just being able to page someone and go "Hey would you like to go to X and RP about Y" even though a lot of us get in our heads and worry about doing it. It is a big luxury when you try playing without it.

ETA: In a MUSH, you are much freer to direct your own story about your character. In other formats, you are inserted into a world which will dictate a lot of your story for you. Even just in terms of which characters you will meet and what opportunities for scenes you will have.

@runescryer I will require that you use the old Mercenary/High Guard/Scout/Merchant Prince to generate life events for plot arcs. Death/discharge optional.

Right now, I'm trying to sort out the mess of system designs. I got the latest version of Traveller 5, but holy crap, that system is near indecipherable...

I'll probably just go with TNE, since I'm looking at that as the setting, anyways. So, all that material should be doable or already included. Also looking to adapt Aslan, Vargr, Zhodani, and possibly the Denaar for PCs. Hivers as Staff PC (since they're running things Just As Planned). K'kree have huge entourages as PCs. And Droyne also have the link to the Ancients that make them potentially problematic as PCs.

Also pooping and peeing on Firan not being coded was a common Firan meme.

Pooping wasn't a thing. I'm fairly certain that people didn't have anuses.

That'd explain why I never did anal on Firan.

I'm also fairly certain that was the reason they decided not to have anuses.

this has been dumb forever. There's lots about firan to criticize or mock legitimately but gamerunners wanting to handwave stuff they don't want to code or deal with RP about is perfectly reasonable.

There was a few people, apparently, that were using the ol' butthole to get around the eesha (that is to say breeding) code. Staff did one of their snap judgements and came up with the idea that the butt is purely decorative.

      No, I don't know either.

Absolutely. I think that if the web presence bit is the primary priority, the choice being between those is spot on, and I really do think that all told Ares is going to be the solution here. BUT! If there are priorities that haven't been identified yet because that's not how the project has been approached, it's really hard to tell.

We don't see a lot of discussion about the other platforms either, so I wanted to make sure that people who haven't been making games for 30 years are aware that further tools exist than the ones we're mostly using now.

      @Runescryer said in Netrunner MUDs:

Technically, Netrunner came out first, since it's based directly on the Cyberpunk RPG. All the names of items, Corporations, and system concepts, like Daemon programs & MU, are directly taken from the Cyberpunk setting.

I'm not sure how you figure that.

      Shadowrun was published in 1989.

      Netrunner was published in 1996.

It is true that the Cyberpunk RPG came out first (in 1988), but Cyberpunk is separate from Netrunner even though they are based in the same setting. Also, Netrunner is based on CP2020 (the 1990 edition) not the original 1998 edition.

@faraday said in Learning Ruby for Ares:

I was reminded that I did a blog post awhile back on the Ares dev blog awhile back about learning Ares code by starting small and reinventing a few wheels before working up to tackle a major project. Might be of interest to some.

While I did indeed jump straight into the big projects, the coding tutorials were actually a huge help! I had tried getting into Ares several times before and each time I was quickly overwhelmed by the complexity (and I have 20 years of experience with MOO, MUSH, MUCK, LPMUD, etc so it wasn't like I was coming in completely "cold". It was still overwhelming).

This last time, I worked my way through the basic coding tutorials and they really helped me learn the system. Ruby was a different story. I was able to figure out the basics just by looking at the code, but ultimately I did have to invest in a Ruby book to learn some of the not-so-obvious things such as code blocks, modules, and how only nil and false are considered False (which actually caused me no small amount of frustration because I use short-circuit evaluation in my code quite a bit).

I highly recommend that anyone interested in learning to code for Ares, start with those tutorials. They'll definitely help ease you into what is a fairly complex game engine.

@Packrat said in Serious Question About Making A MU:

@bored It does not help that quite a lot of games have implemented FS3 without the people running it actually reading the documentation at all. I have been on more than one where various stances/weapons/whatever have actually been doing the opposite of their stated intention with staff utterly oblivious until I pointed it out to them.

Things like shields making it easier to hit you, that kind of stuff.

@Seraphim73 and I may have sighed at one another a time or ten about people not reading the rules.

I mean. There's fewer rules to FS3 than D&D or WoD. Cmon. ๐Ÿ˜‰

There's fewer rules but I never really got my head around them or saw how they clicked with what was happening on game. It was all very confusing, tbh.
