Basically the tl;dr is, every character has a deck that represents the character. But I can actually see Trello being a super convenient resource for this, so I'm gonna explore it.

Hey I'm pretty new to this community, I'm one of the Mudlet developers (windows/macos/linux native client).

The conversation touched the topic of UIs and I thought I'd pitch in with my thoughts on this - the power of MU*'s is, obviously, in their text - but text is a steep learning curve to get into. You have to admit that few people in the world like a wall of text, reading instructions, or not getting instant gratification these days.

This is where having a cool UI for your game can help you out. It gives instant gratification to the newbie to see colourful pictures and a cool interface, and it makes them stick around longer to read the reams of text they're gonna have to learn to love. We encourage games and players to create UIs for this very reason, see some sample UIs here. Many other game admins have arrived at the same conclusion - see custom clients for BatMUD, IREs, and so on.

On the topic of server <-> client interaction - I agree that an out of band protocol is necessary for a modern server as it just cuts a lot of the boilerplate out, so to speak, that players will be otherwise forced to create. My preference is GMCP since it is JSON-based and JSON is a lot easier to work with, but we support a few in Mudlet and even have the ability for scripts to add support for more.

I'll say this as a person that has been lead astray by players before.

DO. NOT. LET. PEOPLE. CHANGE. YOU.

It ends your legitimacy. No matter how hard you might try.

Thanks for the heads up. Gave less than I want, more than I should, but I guess she and I will both be having more peanut butter than we'd like in the next month and that seems fair.

I often joke about how awesome it would be to be hit by lightning. You'd have an excuse--nay, a reason--for any bizarre shit you wanted to do. "What the fuck is wrong with you?" "I got hit by LIGHTNING!!!" There is no comeback. Which is appropriate, as there is usually no comeback from getting hit by lightning.

This is a terrible ramble. Help this kid out if you can.

Current plan is still to do cards. I'm trying to use Scrivner to organize everything. Turns out when you're trying to organize a shit-ton of fucking decks, combined with hundreds of cards, Google Docs isn't adequate.

But I've thought of ways to simplify card making, since I'm no longer doing a distribution model.

I have, however, decided that I'm most likely doing to use something similar to the +cookie system that people are familiar with, to chart progress in a fair way. Which means that everyone gets cards and such when they hit a particular milestone, and it's not just staff arbitrarily deciding when you can have something.

Which means that despite not really doing a traditional progression system, Krillin can still end up the savior of the universe, which is the most important part of my vision.

Addendum: I intend to make my card thing open source, just as an FYI, so that people can do whatever with it.

@HelloProject said in Thought Experiment: Material Design and MUing:

I don't know how many people have read the Material Design documentation (I'm almost done), but I keep thinking: How can this be applied to MUing?

I feel like there's a way, like it's on the tip of my tongue. I think that we should scratch our heads and think of ways, even if it might seem like nonsense, that we could learn from Material Design, even if in some abstract or esoteric way!

We can learn that there is benefit to a well-thought off design document. Notice how almost nothing in it explains why these things are; there is undoubtedly a deeper design document that is used between members of this design team, or the document used to explain to management why this works. Probably during classes for the curious at Google's I/O.

This document is for informing people how to design a consistent experience. You'll notice that the most core of concepts are explained and illustrated before getting to the meat of the matter, and each layer of complexity (movement, color, etc.) does the same thing.

Though all I can think of now is how Google hired a graphic designer who quit out of frustration at the Google engineers arguing over which color of blue to use for a project.

For me it depends on the game, Mage I absolutely want muck around in the high level stuff, D+D and most fantasy settings I tend to lose interest in the early mid-level stages. (Basically when the numbers break down to the point where your character has nothing to worry from standard soldier types, so in d+d usually around 8th level. )

As far as favoring certain builds that to me is a non-issue as long as said builds are open to all and the conditions that lead to favoring them are publicly known.

      WoD is like Cheerios.

You ate it for 20 years and then switched to something far more superior, like Honey Bunches of Oats.

After a few years of HBoO, you will see your ex-girlfriend cereal, Cheerios, on the rack at a store. HEY. 20 years of Cheerios, why not right.

You invite them Cheerios over. Pour milk onto them. Put them in your mouth..

...and then you realize, past the point of no return, that you're committed at least to that one tryst with Cheerios, and that you didn't really miss it that much.

WoD can totally be like regretful ex-sex.

For what I do: Discrete Math, Finite Math (I know, that's like barely basic math, but include logic symbols), Logic Symbols...

Following Logical lines of thought. Truth Tables... I fall back on Truth Tables and Discrete Math a lot. For everything else, I just use a program to do it for me because I'm lazy.

Also, Evennia is fun to play around with. Don't take the whole "Well then you need to learn more about Django, and this, and that." For me, that's exactly why I am playing around with it. Then again, I'm a nerd and I just love learning things (I'm also a grunt and shiny objects generally make me happy, so take whatever I say as a grain of salt).

Once you jump back to your own timeline, Hitler is no longer fucked up. You could just call it all a dream. This is one of the core problems with the New Universe theory of time travel.

      Well, yes.

But there is a timeline in which Hitler is fucked up. And you created it.

      There could be a dozen.

This leads to the same type of game you and I discussed before, a la The Strange (and would even be a good permutation to play with the Cypher system).
