      @Sunny Because it makes it a personal matter, rather than speaking on behalf of someone else. There is an inherent bias in that, whether recognized or not.

      It being personal has no bearing whatsoever on the actual issue being discussed. I asked why it was relevant, not why you said it.

      @runescryer

      I tried it on Ashes, and it was an abysmal failure and accomplished nothing. It didn't make anyone who wasn't already comfortable talking to staff comfortable doing so (they were still staff), and encouraged a lot of RIDICULOUSLY stupid complaining (so and so denied my XP request for X, which is literally in the files as something you can't spend XP on, for example), which when said ridiculousness was dismissed out of hand, was used as "proof" that it was pointless talking to this person because I was still the one making the decisions at the end of the day.

      A game is FAR better off putting the time and effort into just being trustworthy people to begin with.

      Nailing an interview for a job that is not only way above my current payscale, but is in exactly the field I want to get into. It's a combination of grant stuff, public service for disadvantaged populations, and working with providers who are supporting our patients. It's out of the agency of doom and...well, into one that has a way worse reputation, but the particular unit I'll be going into (I met the team already ahahahahahahaha) is like, the coolest.

      NAILED IT. For real. So excited.

      @egg said in If you work hard, son, maybe someday you'll RP:

      Is this just me getting old or cranky, or is there some legitimate pattern here I'm picking up on? Have RPers become less spontaneous and more specific about who or what they will RP?

      To answer this original question, there is legitimately a pattern that has changed. The hobby is very (very) different now than it was 25+ years ago, and so are all of us that are still doing it.

      I was in somebody's office today, so I snagged a buddy to come watch me (my personal policy for going into peoples' locked offices without them). I bend over to inspect the printer and hear a gasp and a muffled sound from behind me. I look, my coworker very delicately asks me if I'm aware I have a rip in my pants.

      No, no, I was not. It is a rip alllllllllllllllllllll the way down the seam along my rear end. Errything is on display (or at least my very adorable underclothing). EEK. So I am standing like a cat outside for the first time, staring and frozen, trying to figure out how I get back to my office to get my coat to wrap it around me, and my co-worker volunteers to walk Right Behind Me to ensure NOBODY WILL SEE. So she does. I get my coat, check in with my boss, head to the closest buy-pants-store.

      Everyone at the store was REALLY nice, and the lady at the dressing room was all 'come back here when you've bought it and I'll let you change here' (which is generally something that this store does not do).

      Could've been a terrible, humiliating experience, it really could've been. Instead, this is a hilarious story that I get to entertain myself and others with for ages. Also, my new pants are a- super cute, and b- fit better than the old ones, and they were only $20!

    • RE: Not even sure what to title this, but here goes..

      Thank you for posting this.

      That said, I've seen you do this before. There are a few people you gave a similar apology to and then turned on a few years ago, and I watched a couple of people get hurt over and over. When I can see it from the distance that I've had -- I've never actually been on one of your games -- it's pretty bad.

      I am skeptical, but I'm also willing to wait and see, to give you the opportunity to walk the walk you're talking.

    • RE: Difference between an NPC and a Staff PC?

      @bear_necessities

      Romance plots are an enormous staple of storytelling and have been since the dawn of storytelling. Sex and romance is an enormous driver of the human species. Much, much, much drama in entertainment revolves around sex for this reason. Bringing it into our pretendy fun-time games as a plot element should not be surprising or weird, considering that it shows up in every other type of entertainment media.

      FFS, in video game RPGs now, you do romance/sex with NPCs as part of the story. Dragon Age. Even SWTOR, the MMO, lets you romance an NPC.

      Not weird.

      There is a teeny tiny part of me wondering how much plot I've missed out on over the years because I've never flirted with / tried to bang an NPC.

      FOMO is one of the biggest drivers for drama/problems/issues on Mushes these days.

      @Auspice

      One of the biggest issues I have been facing is a complete inability to find local care that isn't emergency/short term temporary. Nobody around here is accepting patients save for a few, and they are either terrible, or don't accept my insurance and are stupid expensive. It's a serious issue here in general, and I have had doctor help in trying to find someone. It has been hell.

      I poked around at that website, and long story short I have a physical appointment with someone next week and she is local and specializes in my trauma type. And I like her face.

      So. Thanks.

      Real people are playing these NPCs, and they have the right to whatever fun they can get on whatever characters they enjoy playing - and it's really just none of anyone else's business.

      Bingo. Agree 100%. This is how I feel about it, too. As long as the staffer is not harming anything (and I mean that: if harm is being done, whether by favoritism or by some other mechanism, then that harm is a problem), it's OK, and also none of anyone else's business.

      "you're too emotional" is a common derailing tactic in debate used against women who express any sort of investment in what they're arguing about.

      Which would be more valid if he implied it was because she was a woman, and not just a person getting emotional.

      Telling someone you believe they are getting to emotional is perfectly fine. I think that people are reading some kind of sexism into the statement that Thenomain didn't put in there.

      People, regardless of sex, can in fact be getting too emotional.

      He wanted to know why people were reacting the way they were, and I was just explaining, since he asked for further explanation.

      And he's questioning them in a logical manner.

      I get it.

      I've also backed off and apologized to the party directly affected, and thanked Roz privately for the consideration.

      Apology was indeed given and accepted. All is well.

      Back on the topic:

      I'm not attempting to make the point that sexually charged RP doesn't or can't lead to bias. It has, it can, it will. My point is that it's misbehavior when it happens, and if it's going to happen, the misbehavior is going to happen in some other way if this isn't possible, because the problem you have is an unethical staffer, NOT that said unethical staffer was typing sex.

      I suggest not giving the impression that 'change your name, change your face, sneak in past a ban' is a good idea. Even if behavior is changed, it's better to go forth and be better somewhere they did not specifically tell you you aren't welcome because of things that you did previously. Because even if you changed, the people you did things to may still be there, and they deserve to feel safe.
