@faraday I may be misremembering, then, since I am cringey on wikidot. It's like moonspeak to me.

RE: What Do You Collect?
@tek Remind me to pick up a few Chick Tracts for you from the magical Exxon megaplex we always stop at on the road to Florida. They're extra special, and they almost always have a broad selection.

The input from whatever client (in Evennia known as the inputfunc) is already today completely generalized and could come from wherever client - like a telnet connection, GMCP/MSDP or a JSON blob from the webclient or an optional REST API. Once parsed by the wire protocol, the inputfunc looks the same to the system, regardless of source.
I think the thing a lot of people are trying to get across is this: everything said right here may as well be written in Aramaic to most of us -- and that's just 'what it does/can do', not even 'and here is how to do it' or 'why you'd want to do it' or 'this is what you'd want if your end goal is X'.

RE: RL Anger
I see the scammers as a completely legitimate place to vent any relevant aggression. That's not 'right', but I frankly don't care.
I can probably link a fair measure of my testiness in recent months to the fact that I probably actually managed to get them to stop calling.
I was in the middle of a video call with a former friend on hangouts once when they called, and he got to listen to the fireworks. I am still glad he was on my headphones, because I'm pretty sure they would have heard him cracking the fuck up. That time, it was some poor asshole just reading off the script and probably didn't have the best grasp on English, and they referred to me as 'Sir', which led to an instant snap to, "Do I sound like a motherfucking 'Sir' to you?" and it only went downhill from there. I was watching the video screen thumbnail as the guy I was talking to was turning deeper shades of purple as he was laughing his ass off and tears streamed down his face.
(So yes, I can make a grown man cry, it's just not how most people would expect.)

RE: RL Anger
@Apu Consider this another vote of support from a long hair junkie. Mine would never, ever grow out past my shoulders until I flipped after a round of bad extensions (don't even ask, that's too long a story for another day) and just shaved them out in back and went full on skater cut for about three years, with the long top and the shaved back. (It was the nineties, come on, people!)
It worked like a charm.
I switched from dyeing it all a collection of reds/coppers/burgundies everyone under the sun oooooohed over for over a decade to olive/teal/purples with bright orange + burgundy underneath (same area that once was shaved, gimme a break, topknots look wonderfully trippy now) and got the same reaction from some people for about a week or so.
...now most of those same people have threatened to shave my head if I don't keep up with doing the green because apparently 'it suits you and somehow looks normal on you, how creepy is that'. So beware the people who decide the buzz looks better if you plan to grow it out!

if you're shooting for making this accurate to the show's setting and feel, it would definitely scrape plenty of no-go points with mushers.
Unless a vocal minority of posters now speak for all of us, this is not the case. It's far from being universal.
I'm not willing to give them that power to control what other people can or can't do by treating them as though they're the whole of the hobby.

RE: RL Anger
Yeah, yeah. And miscarriage due to overexercising, hot tubs, caffeine usage, eating lunchmeat, ect. should be manslaughter. Dropping a stack of fertilized eggs in petri dishes is as bad as the loss of life in the OKC bombing. Such a goddamn stupid argument. Nobody except for crazies like Eric Rudolf believes that shit.
There are reasons I love my state.
I find this the best of all possible fuck-yous to the personhood idiocy. (Srsly, I fucking love my state.)
Which is, frankly, the beginning and end of all I'm going to say on this one. I was stuck as a mod on an abortion debate forum for many years on livejournal, pit o' drahmah, for too many years to not have liberally applied the shiny new ignore feature to the testicle-bearers trying to stir shit on this particular topic with hyperbole and nonsense, playing childish provocateurs, because spending the time to lay out why it's hyperbole and nonsense, or even why this shit is childish and counterproductive, would be a complete waste of that time, no matter how tempting it is.

RE: Which device do you play from?
Currently, the old desktop. When the old desktop dies, I'll run it from the other one, which is much newer.
On the bluest of moons when traveling for a bit, the iPad, with a keyboard and mouse set up with it. I've used the husband's ancient backup laptop for this once in a bluer moon, but it's almost as bad as the tablet, and taking both with us somewhere is not worth it, especially if I have to take the tablet anyway for other things.
I have logged in from the phone just to chat OOC briefly, but I would never even try to RP from it.

RE: Random links
The first recording at this link is pure joy.
Somebody needs to make this guy as a character somewhere, because... shit, I'm more surprised someone hasn't already.

@Auspice Ditto. Already on block! Thanks for the heads-up.

RE: RL Anger
Not to mention, 'because you like the beach' is probably less a factor than 'close to work'. I mean yeesh.

RE: Cyberrun
@Tinuviel Yeah, I get that. Unfortunately, I'm talking about... stuff that isn't funny and can be profoundly disturbing to stumble across visuals of (that often don't have the same impact in text). There's a lot of very violent rape imagery, amputation and snuff imagery, etc. Not censored, no limits on what can be shown (aside from no pictures of real world children of any kind from what I recall).
I would really, really never want to see a wiki of that, children or no children.

RE: RL Anger
Having to deal with my parents today, that... is filling me with a similar dread to @Auspice's. That mine like to blackmail and strongarm me about shit to force compliance (@Ganymede, I need to take some notes... ) with their views (which they have had almost no luck with since I was 8, hence the strongarm bullshit) is not something I am much looking forward to.
When my husband has to run an errand with my mother and tell her in the strongest terms that political matters are not to be discussed and to pass this along to my father, you know it's not good.
I am going to get yelled at for unfriending her cheerfully gloating ass on FB over dinner, and to put it bluntly, she is well aware that her daughter is a survivor of rape and multiple sexual assaults who has been extremely fucked up by the events of this election cycle and what it potentially means for those of us who have gone through this in our lives. "Hold your nose and vote the party line" is forgivable, understandable. Cheerful gloating and wholesale dismissal of any concerns with a cheerful laugh and a flippant wave of her hand... it is going to be a very long time before I can look at my mother again without feelings of utter disgust.
As it stands, I have to hear about how godly she imagines herself to be on a disturbingly regular basis, which is typically eye-roll-inspiring. Until I calm the fuck down a little -- which is likely to be a matter of weeks rather than a mere handful of days -- so help me, it is going to take all the resolve I have to not actually spit on that woman for her myopia, bigotry, and callous disregard for not just her fellow man, but for her own daughter.
(No, I do not remotely believe that everyone who voted that way is a bigot, or 'yay sexual assault' -- but she, specifically, actually is a long-standing racist, and pretty much gives none fucks about sexual assault or abuse, and is equally long on record as being in the 'legitimate rape and/or she must have been doing something to ask for it' philosophical camp.)

RE: How can everyone play the same game?
@mietze I think the limited interaction scenario tends to come with other limits, too. Some people are cool with that, and I kinda view this as not just natural, but necessary to actually enforce at times.
For example: someone who doesn't want anything to do with the metaplot is not going to get RP from it, which may be precisely what they want. I don't think it should be changed to forcibly include them; if they wanted to be included they'd seek to participate. The enforcement part comes in regarding the folks who don't want to participate, but want the benefits (IC prestige, XP, special items, whatever) of having participated. That's when it's time for the NOPE. ( Barring cases in which the world is altered or similar and everyone is impacted by a thing.)
The other examples are similar. My preference is to let people be as insular as they wish provided they aren't interfering with others by inaction (faction heads, etc.) but that choice limits their opportunities in a variety of ways as well.

RE: RL Anger
@Auspice Same. I've only even gotten called in to the courtroom for a review once, and they picked everybody before they got to me.
...I think the green hair may officially make me a nope, because 'guys, a chick with green hair helped decide this' is probably grounds for something.

RE: Mobbing in Text Games
A quick addendum to the rest: some things may appear to be mobbing/dogpiling, but are not that, and we should endeavor to not misidentify it.
Main example: almost all of the true bad actors have done quite a bit to earn that reputation. If ten people come forward with individual, first-hand experiences about them? Not a dogpile. Not a mob. In the rare cases in which someone has accrued the kind of genuinely game-wrecking nightmare interactions-- again, this is extremely rare -- then people should be aware.
First-hand account is stressed for a reason. The game of telephone/whisper down the line/rumor mill simply distorts too much.
Knowing explicitly why someone is diving in is not irrelevant, and, "X intentionally violated a no-contact order three times trying to get in my character's pants and was banned three times for it," is going to have a different weight than, "my bestie heard they were shady," or "oh, I just know they're just the worst," or even, "I just can't stand that way of thinking!" or the most realistic "all my friends are doing it!" and rightfully so.
It is no surprise at all that the reasons for joining in are very rarely disclosed. They would out the real bad actors like lightning from on high.

@saosmash I approve of this SO HARD, you have no idea. That made me grin when one was much needed.
