    • RE: POLL: Super Hero MU Gut Check

I think /any/ setting can work, if somebody is going to invest the time into telling stories.

Staff has to be willing to get the RP ball rolling, not just to build a game and expect people to show up and breathe life into it on their own. And that means potentially running multiple +events in the first few weeks (maybe months) of your game until people are hooked enough to start doing it on their own.

Even if you build an amazing, super detailed 'world' and then open your game, that's not enough.

As long as the other players aren't actual jerks about the "ICly being mad over a breakup" kind of stuff, I think it could be fun.

The only other thing I'd love to see is an extremely limited alt policy (1 major sphere + 1 mortal/m+?). That would have the benefit of limiting the number of mages running around without having to impose a cap. It would encourage cross-sphere RP, encourage investment in a single character (which will help with sustainability), and will help beef up the mortal sphere.

I feel like if you want the 'intensity' of actual conflict and territory and limited resources, etc, a heavily limited alt policy is required, IMO.

I also think in a multisphere game, where CROSSOVER is part of the staff philosophy, only 1 super char per player would...honestly be a lot of fun?

      IDK, maybe I'm weird.

If all companions were Morrigan, the Dragon Age series would be much better. The series is a failure because of the lack of Morrigan.

    • RE: Star Trek Theme/Setting Discussion

      Pretty much what @RnMissionRun said.

In my opinion, nothing about Star Trek really feels suited to a MU. Once you have your game's 'Kirk' and 'Spock'-esque spots filled, there's not a lot for anybody else to be doing except having space sex.

Star Trek doesn't really strike me as having the 'background' to really suit a MU either. I'm not aware of any detailed in-depth systems for different Star Trek weapons or ships floating around or anything and don't recall any, so it's not like 'combat' will really be anything special. It doesn't seem like there'd be a lot of opportunity for plots outside of "make up a random planet and alien species" either, where Star Wars has a billion things you could do plot-wise.

I don't play on a Star Wars MU or anything, but....I really see 0 reason why if you want 'space genre' for a MU, you would /ever/ pick Star Trek.

Star Wars or Serenity or something else would just offer a hundred times more.

Star Trek as a MU would have literally nothing except --

      1. Storyteller runs a thing with some made up planet you're exploring/whatever. (The problem here is Star Trek feels like it pigeonholes you into basically only being able to do this one specific type of plot which drastically cuts down your pool of people willing to run stuff. WTF else happens in Star Trek?)

      2. You're fucking on a spaceship.

Other space settings just are way better suited to a MU environment.

Edit : As a movie series and TV show, Star Trek is great fun. As a MU, it just feels way too "narrow" in the scope of things for players to "do". Star Wars, you have space wars, bounty hunting, planet-specific wars, galactic crime organizations, jedi peacekeeping, jedi vs sith, sith plotting, etc, etc.

Star Trek is...find a new planet. Maybe have a war with the klingons.

The problem with 'war' as a thing in Star Trek, is it does not seem like those scenes would be anywhere near as fun to play out as they would in some other Space-themes, because the scope of the battle is "100 people on 1 ship, with none of them really doing anything" rather than "10 people piloting 10 different fighters, all doing something" and foot combat would pretty much be 'phaser guns pew pew'.

@collective Whether MUers can be trusted with this sort of thing is definitely an entirely different question, yeah and not one that history gives much hope for.

      Alas.

Staff would literally have to be on HIGH ALERT regarding both IC and OOC predatory/shitty/etc behavior every single time a new player gets a character.

Unless they put a ton of effort into developing the character's personality and story (see: Geralt from the Witcher), I'd generally rather play as a female than "insert generic action dudebro" and it does impact my interest in games.

    • RE: How low can "low stakes" be and still be compelling for RP?

My incredibly jaded 2c is that that sort of thing would not attract enough people.

The only niche that seems to exist for 'medieval' style RP is lord & ladies stuff where players will essentially 100% turn the game into "Pretty Princess Royal Weddings : The MU".

My personal concern here would be how interesting of a character could you really make where you're playing an /RPG/ and the most interesting thing going on is 'protect your goats from the snow'.

That just feels like something that'd be a 'slice of life' type scene on a bigger game. Like somebody on Arx who is a farmer might have 1 random scene where they're fixing up the barn with a family member or something. It's not exactly...moving?

Just an FYI guys. If you're playing Anthem on PS4 or XBox the game is causing critical hard crashes on the consoles and in some cases people are reporting that their systems are getting bricked.

Now right now there's only a few reports of bricking but the critical crashes were discussed on the Giant Bomb podcast the other night and is in their written review of the game.

EA is taking revenge for everybody shitting on their 0-effort disaster.

Then people whine about how the MU* community is dying.

It's dying because it's been massively poisoned by weird hipsters and the same 'political correctness/white knight' mentality that has tainted college campuses and the internet everywhere. Which has resulted in a massive dilution of quality in terms of both players and characters. Alt-girls everywhere. Bikerbros everywhere. Anime fox girl biker gang members.

WoD MUs in particular are suffocating under the weight of trash.

"Omg you elitist. And you want to ignore the rules too! YOU ARE ALL THAT IS WRONG IN THE WORLD!"

      alt text

WoD is the prevailing system used by people on this board. Assuming you play WoD.

The rules for WoD are primarily written for cooperative tabletop play. They are not written for player versus player social maneuvering.

    • RE: Eliminating social stats

@Gingerlily said in Eliminating social stats:

I feel like even if Bob is a shitty writer, its cool to let your character be convinced by his shitty writing to buy the Avon he's selling at double the price you should, because it does not hurt you and it is fun for Bob.

The problem is, social dice and stats never come up for this level of stuff.

If it did, sure, that's harmless and not painful to let happen.

In my experience (YMMV), people only start wanting to flex their social dice for stuff like "i convince you to support me to be King of the World!" or "I persuade you to betray the Emperor with me!" or "I convince you to tell me all the horrible life-threatening secrets you know about Jane!" and of course the standard "I seduce you!"

Social stats for things like selling/buying shit is one thing. That's a "okay this is done now" sort of thing. When people are trying to use social stats to influence decisions that affect the entirety of my character's future (and thus, potentially force me to RP in a particular way that isn't fun), we're not really in the same ballpark or even universe any longer.

And I don't mean 'fun' as in 'oh no I lost, no fun'. I mean it as in 'wow, now based off that social roll my character would theoretically be a lot more involved in stuff with Bob, and I as a player do not really enjoy playing with him'.

This stuff makes it important to remember we are not just playing a game.

If anybody doesn't get "Fallcoast staff is panicking because it dropped from 100+ person who lists to 30 person who lists in the span of about a month" vibes from this "advertisement", I think it's a case of being willfully obtuse.

Why open a brand new ad thread for a game that doesn't yet exist that is literally nothing but

      "please log on fallcoast :D"

Just reeks of trying to yank attention back to themselves really awkwardly especially when literally nothing new was offered about the Miami game.

TBH if I had to guess, I'd wager other-staff on FC is hounding Sonder about the game being dead and demanding she do something. And we got this "ad".

      But, what do I know.
