      @apos said in RL Anger:

I think #2 absolutely deserves someone to be a dick back.

And I think it's just making it into a bar-fight. There are people who can do it well, but they know what they're doing and are the exception that proves the rule. Otherwise, you risk escalation and you cannot take the moral high-ground; you've lowered yourselves to their level with the excuse of "they started it". (Which was never an excuse when I was growing up. Maybe things have changed.)

The #2 anti-trolling technique (after ignoring them) is to respond to them with honesty and logic. While I think we over-use the term "troll", it does bear looking into. A true troll will respond with more, while people who aren't really trolling (knee-jerk reactions, e.g.) will start to act in kind.

So yes, if we can stop escalation, all's the better. If not? Sure, let's bring out the big guns.

      --

      important edit:

I agree with "it's degrees", but I don't think the first response to defending oneself should be to make a sick burn. It should be "does this need defending?"

The second should be: "How is the best way to defend this?"

I cannot think of any situation where "with being a dick" is a good answer. A fun answer, sure, but not if your goal is solving the problem.

      @lotherio

In the end,the staff are beholden to their players, and the players are beholden to the staff. If you set up a D&D Mu* with complex dungeon crawling, inventory, and resource management tools, and most of your players hang around in the taverns and complain there is nothing to do, you can’t exactly yell at them for not engaging the game as designed.

I mean, you can, but be careful for not coming off as a complete asshole. That’s a lot of work for people to wander into and say how dull it is.

Why people pay WoD games varies hugely, and is something Gany mildly commented upon. I was using Shadow Run specifically because I know that’s a real situation. The above D&D game really happened to Nuku, who didn’t complain, and it really happened to Serenity Mush, who did.

Staff has a responsibility to help players learn the game as intended, and players have a responsibility to try and learn the game as intended. Sometimes people will meta game this, and that’s just going to happen. You scold them when they are caught, and you praise those who engage.

tl;dr: Shadow Run is written top to bottom about a certain kind of character. So is D&D. They are games about a thing and are geared toward that thing and so should be played about that thing.

The various Chronicles of Darkness lines have finally moved in this direction again and should be honored. Mad props to my old Eldritch crew, @SunnyJ, Fate’s Harvest, and several other game creators for realizing this.

I'm unlikely to code any game that is not specifically released for Chronicles of Darkness, or with someone from Onyx Path saying it won't be done. This isn't because I don't like Mummy (tho I do think it's one of the games that must absolutely played without other spheres), but self-preservation.

@Coin and @skew know pretty much how to manipulate me into working on it, tho Skew is still waiting for me to figure out what's wrong with fighting styles, and both are waiting on sub-sheets, so they won't push things if they know what's good for 'em.

This is usual where I'm involved. I do sincerely apologize to the entire world that my communications aren't better.

Let's just say that I'm angry at the current state of American Politics and how that's sometimes reflected on these boards. I really do think people are better than that, and I'm constantly let down. Why can't people try to be better, even in the face of people who don't?

      Adulting is hard.

Upstairs Downstairs was a long running British show about the separation of the lords of the manor and the servants. I want to say around the early 1900s but can’t recall.

The idea is that for every politic there are a hundred barbarians, as the Romans called them, trying to storm the gates.

Or in (before, after) the Dark Ages, just trying to live their lives under their own system, and getting conquered, and then having to be managed by the new politicians. I imagine the amount of money and fruitless effort of the Romans taking over Gaul cost about as much money as us trying to stabilize Afghanistan.

What I mean is that while I agree that ther is probably no place for werewolves in the political side of things, ignoring them while trying to control the land probably was quite foolish.

No, I'm not. I didn't want you to do the change in the first place. You did it for @SunnyJ. My only concern for the future (and for SCC) is how do I undo this change?

You don't install it. The core system will be able to handle it, but you don't have to install Hurt Locker fighting styles if you don't want. Dork.

      Motorcycles.

I don't care if you can accelerate very fast, if I'm in front of you on the on ramp I get first right of merging. No amount of "watch out for motorcycles" bumper stickers will make it my responsibility if I run into them while they're doing this.

To reduce the chance of frustration after a rule change, staff should permit players to re-spec their +sheets in light of a rule change.

Staff should do this with regards to any game change. Not a full Respec, but try to make the change easy to take, whether it's rules or grid or game lines. Whatnot.

I don't care if you got approved with some retarded shit on your sheet. Staff shouldn't be afraid to go 'no, you can not drop a truck on Jane while sitting in your apartment'. And players should grow the fuck up and realize that's a pretty reasonable stance.

More accurately, staff shouldn't be afraid to backpedal when something's broken.

We should be calling this "fixing it".

I think the biggest drawback to a small game is not being able to easily avoid those you want to.

Or learn how to play with people you don't want to. That's where we started, and it creates some stressful encounters but none so stressful as "now I can't play this game because xxx plays there".

Then again, we didn't have a culture of video games back in the 1600s where if someone wants to not engage there were a thousand other things to do.

The 'you' was a generic, hobby-wide statement, not meant for you specifically, unless your statement about the drawback of a small game was concerning you specifically. I assumed it wasn't, so made a similar generic statement.

The idea of "forcing a scene" is 95% Stupid to me. I think people should go into scenes to see what happens, not as part of a crafted storyline. If you didn't enjoy it then that's hard luck but it's going to happen.

Part of the fun to me in "forced" scenes is paging with people I know making table-talk. I cannot play an RPG without table-talk. I certainly can't go to sphere meetings, which is the closest thing I can imagine being a forced scene, without considering a good stiff drink to prepare me for all the player-drama.

No matter how IC things are, you can always see the player behind it.

The second kind of scene that I can think as "forced" is when someone has information, you want the information, and they make it a bloody chore to get that information. Here's an instance where asking staff to sidestep RP is probably a good idea.

The idea that one person doesn't enjoy RPing with another is fine, but I can think of multiple times where someone from Arx has said they were doing just that because there was something in it for them; information, planning, other people around, whatnot. And that is not a small game. And they seem to get over it.
