@ortallus said in Internet Attacks? Why?:

So why the fuck would you blame the police, over the caller?

      I would not.

      Both are to blame.

The caller for filing false claims to the police.

The police are wrong for shooting an unarmed man.

      Both must be held accountable.

What "accountable" is doesn't have to be the same. I am happy to let the courts decide what action deserves what punishment; this is a lot of their job. I believe both require punishment, and strongly believe both should be done so publicly, in the brightest light possible, to maintain or re-gain public trust.

I think you're both right, a subset of Cyberpunk, or a kind of what I've also found being called "Tech Noir".

      Cool.

Sometimes I love to turn the tables on staff who think that some bit of code is going to be fairly straightforward.

      Staffer: "Hey, Coder, do this!"
Me: "Okay, I need input on these 170 items."
      Staffer: "I...what?"

I almost feel bad for them, but I also know that I will never have a staffer ask me what's taking so long.

The interaction between the Player Types is quite interesting, but keep in mind that griefing is a Killer trait. Extensive studies show that to have a stable population of Killers, there needs to be a substantial non-majority of non-Killers and if I recall correctly, the only Player Type to happily co-exist with Killers are Explorers, all of this because of the griefing trait.

Extra Credits covers this topic quite a few times. It’s worth checking out.

I personally don’t think someone is a single player type, but they shift around between several depending on what they want at that moment, but it works for study purposes to look at the four types as if they are discreet people.

All that being said, we've had many chime check it out then leave. The group sticking around is a damn good group of folks who enjoy a little bit of everything, the adventures, the tourneys, and yes the romance (even if they are holding out against Daithi). The RP is enjoyable to read in the logs.

Daithi cares not for romance. Daithi cares for battle, beer, and busty broads.

Do I not care about you? I'm attempting to communicate with you, appease you even, which is does not mesh with "do not care".

My point is that you don't need to defend yourself. A lot of people who think they do, don't. It's a matter of accepting proportionate response.

    • RE: Social Systems

      @zombiegenesis said in Social Systems:

@Thenomain Most of the systems I use (Savage Worlds and A Song of Ice and Fire) actually have you set a social objective before you enter into the social conflict.

This is the negotiation I mentioned. I can think of quite a few systems that have tried this, and have considered how this would be done outside a social situation and each time I run it through my head, the social situation takes far longer to get into.

      --

      A Practical Example

Back in the oWoD days, the rules were pretty much written as "this sounded good at the time" and Rule Zero always gave people the chance to ignore rules.

In action in a situation where there is no GM oversight—i.e., online—this meant that everyone could negotiate what the rule really meant. In action, combat scenes of 4 people could take more than eight hours.

More than eight hours. For combat. And why? Because people could argue their case.

It has been said and repeated that stricter rules keeps this from happening, and people can either agree to play a game with that rule or not, or informally ask people to ignore the rules, but they couldn't make a case for each roll of the dice and therefore things go far faster.

This is what most social systems lack.

      Fix this.

      --

edit: I have seen @SunnyJ's attempts at fixing this. They're pretty bad-ass.

@Ominous said in Star Wars: Insurgency:

@Misadventure I have poked at ORE a few times, but that second one is new to me. It sounds a bit fiddly, like you have to keep track of a bunch.

The second one isn't from an ORE game. Don't Rest Your Head is a game system where you have to manage your rolls very carefully or you will start on a downward spiral. It's not as complex as it sounds, and extremely fitting to the theme. I think both Mis and I have written a DRYH roller before.

I know I wrote an ORE roller before, and even without all the random insane dice types it's kind of complex. It's one of the few times I've used as much ANSI as possible, though, so if anyone wants to know if Thenomain is always grouchy about ANSI, the answer is "no, just about yours".

The most complex roller is the 7th Sea 2nd Ed dice system. The core problem is that a true min-maxer will try to find a way to not give any dice to the GM, and why have code if it's not doing the hard work for you? I gave up trying to create a best-fit results calculator, because one of these things would have to happen:

      1. An accurate best-fit system used in multi-million dollar company's inventory systems.
      2. Brute force all the possible outcomes and try to fudge with 98% best fit.
      3. Change the roll resolution mechanics.
      4. Let the min-maxers hang, and if the GM gets dice then the GM gets dice.

No, no, no...yes. Enjoy your game and get over the GM having a moment's advantage.

Is it, though? In an open discussion about religion, is saying 'I don't like this religion' rude?

I know you and I disagree about what the Advertisement board is for, but I think it's rude to shit-talk someone for disagreeing, that is without saying something like, "I find that rude for this discussion."

That is, it's not okay (acceptable, not-rude) to be a dick to someone you think is being a dick. It's just making it worse.

    • RE: Social Systems

      @ganymede

I didn't want to get into the situation where people argued which systems did what well, but address the underlying problem or problems with social systems.

That said, I do agree with the following:

      1. Players need to play the system. This is part of what all players agree to when they sign into a game. Players can agree amongst themselves not to engage with a system if they don't want to, but if they want a system they have to engage with the one presented.
      2. The "carrot" system of Fate, RfK, etc. is one of the best systems I've seen, knowing that Exalted seems to have a decent way, and that Fate also has made even physical combat a series of role-played benefits and drawbacks where social combat = mental stress makes sense. The drawback with a gain/spend bennies system for accepting or pushing bad things on others is that you get one bennie no matter the stakes. (That is, it's not good with varying stakes.)
      3. I can't remember my #3. The previous two are far more important, and in that order. If staff have a system that players want to engage in, that staff should consider themselves both skilled and damned lucky. You can lead an RPer to a rulebook...

This is definitely a pretty cool use of Evennia!

To explain the Debbie Downer post from @ixokai, Mage does not seem to lend itself to turn-based combat, considering that one of the core precepts of Mage (any version) is that of using magic in creative and unexpected ways, while the description for 'MtAsc Online' is almost that of a Mud.

I am not going to say this won't work, because fuck it why not see what it's like. I will say that @Streetwitch has placed the bar in a curious location and I want to see how he/she will parkour her/his way over to it.

If Troika can manage it with Vampire, it's entirely possible. I absolutely want to see what comes of this.
