@Quinn said in Favorite/Most Memorable Childhood Books:

The Book of Three series by Lloyd Alexander. The ending book, The High King, is still one of my favorite books ever.

I came to this thread of post about the Prydain books. I distinctly remember reading them weirldy out of order (starting with the last one which I did not understand was part of a series initially, then the second, then the first and third, then the fourth) because of limited copies in my school library. I've got copies of them at home now that I occasionally reread (in order).

If run as a TGG-style meat-grinder (both emphasis on soft RP outside of combat and ruthless enforcement of 'KO with no luck points is death' in combat? I would play the fuck out of that. And I think it's as perfectly suited for FS3 as a setting can be, really.

I am always surprised by how emotionally invested I become in paperwork sorting in a shed for the benignly evil overlords. Love 'Papers, Please,' and it's become (unfortunately) weirdly timely.

A parallel book game is probably the single idea out of all those being bandied around that I'd have zero interest in playing.

    • RE: Anyone want to ST for Changeling?

I expect a web page that players can update with logs and character pages and where important theme files can live. A wiki seems to be the easiest way to do this (I use Wikidot, which is free and does not require me to host it myself or find another party to do so). I've seen pretty good set-ups on WordPress (Second Pass and No Return do this in a way I consider user-friendly). There are assuredly other ways. It would never be anything I would expect a hosting service to provide, because it's a separate service, though the ones that do it are really nice.

I have never played a game without something and probably wouldn't. Even back in the dark olden days when we were posting logs to Yahoo! user-groups and only the headwiz could update the website, at least that was something.

I mean sure you should if you want to do that. There are an endless amount of simple and low maintenance ways to just set up a game between friends, and I'll confess I'm frequently mystified that the players who complain about MUs or available settings, but really do just want to play with their friends, don't use Discord or whatever to do their own thing. When I personally talk about the potential of MUing it's in the context of games that have more persistent world support and more ability to centralize stuff like character stats and systems. I think there's a TON of statless, sandbox style rp out there that this community doesn't interact with and would be well-served to investigate. It just doesn't do what a MU does.

For me, the concern would be the large population who LOVES L&L games driving a WoT game toward being a standard L&L game. Which has happened in fantasy settings less suited for it before, and will happen again. I don't want to rag on that, even though it's not my bag, but it's definitely a thing staff is going to have to decide how much they want to support. There will be demand.

A couple people said their MO is to open a game for like 6 months, get bored, and open another one. I think Lantern Hill was one? I've definitely never played on one of their other games, so someone else will have to confirm.

This shit honestly baffles me. Just...run a private game if this is what you want to do. There's nothing wrong with that, you'll take zero flack for it, it's a far more appropriate way to do some types of campaigns. Why open a public game when you don't actually want to run one?

This hobby would be about a thousand times more enjoyable with a little more chill and a lot more self-awareness but ¯_(ツ)_/¯ it'll never happen and this is why a lot of us don't staff anymore and fuck humans etc etc.

I mean, I deeply appreciate that a lot of people still do. It's shit a lot of days.

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeah, this is such a big AVOID AVOID AVOID red flag.

The ability to let things happen slowly/organically is a big MORE RP for me.

      @Jeshin said:

Example: Jeshin walks down the road after a long night out drinking. He has a faint sheen of sweat on his face and cannot walk straight as evident by his slow weaving route.

I guess this is sort of metaposing because it mentions the long night out drinking, but it's mostly just calling attention to body language cues that would be observable in any normal interaction, but are harder to highlight in text. Most communication that we have in-person is non-verbal. I don't think it constitutes meta to highlight these things, since they're a big part of normal interaction if you aren't a blind moron.

With a lot of other narrative posing there's more of a gray area. The kind that's generally targeted (rightly) for hate is passive-aggressive thought-posing that there is no way to respond to, ie: Three-Eyed Crow sits at the bar, chatting pleasantly, all the while thinking about how much she hates Creature and her awful personality.

That sounds really cool. Currently, I personally run into situations where I feel like 'Ugh I don't want to dogpile on this guy but this actually is a huge IC deal, I guess I'll just RP my character internalizing a loss of respect for society being tralala about it.' Which is appropriate in a lot of cases, there's no shortage of hypocrisy in the world, but I love the idea of non-mob IC impacts that are subject to staff review.

    • RE: Short-Term MU*s

I think it's a decent idea. TGG ran similar short-term campaigns and the players who liked it liked it a lot. You have to accept it won't be for everyone and it'll be a niche game. You have to accept that people will like campaigns more than others. You have to be consistent about actually DOING other campaigns (consistency in general is a trait MUers lack). But the idea itself is a good one.

The other incarnations were also meaner, to varying degrees, so I'm sure most people here have hated another person here at one time or another.

After all, that's what 1984 is about, the totalitarian point of view in which the potential of a word to hurt means it has to expunged from the lexicon outright.

That is not what 1984 is about.

It's a valid reading of the text. Anything that 'hurts' the governmental machine is removed. Emotions, words, people, etcetera.

I often wonder how Orwell would react to the wide spectrum of ideologies that want to coopt 1984 as a screed against The Other Side. Though it's not as lulzy as its iconography being used by corporations to sell computers and shit I guess.

    • RE: Optional Realities & Project Redshift

For what it's worth, I don't get intractability from @Jeshin's posts. What I do get is aggressive salesmanship of a product (the website and his brand of RPIs). Since I work at a Giant Soulless Mega-Corp and sometimes have to deal with people in sales, all of whom drive me in-fucking-sane after any conversation lasting more than 5 minutes, I feel like I get enough of this in my non-hobby time, to put it mildly. But it doesn't offend me, particularly because this is the Ad forum and if there's a place for that kind of thing, this is it.

Yeah that totally wasn't directed at you. Tho even the softer concept of 'seasons' where there are contained story campaigns and then you shift to another (with mostly the same characters) I've been on a handful of places that have done them to varying degrees of success/failure. I think there's more experimentation in smaller games than the not-so-vast masses see sometimes. This is a cool approach to it and its exciting to see it tried, tho.

Is this thing from that dude who tried to app his Shang character on Arx/got banned from this board after going on a tear about the injustice of his Shang character getting denied? I mourn the idea that there might be two of them.
