I kinda don't care if IC punishments/negative rep adjustments happen off-screen as long as there is IC indication that they're happening that the world beyond the PC can interact with, if something is a big enough deal that that needs to happen. BBposts, reputation hits, maybe something localized as a rumor within a squadron etc. I'm always kinda surprised by how effective Arx's propriety mods are (they're basically sheeted negative reputation write-ups). While they have some coded impact, the most effective thing they seem to serve as is theme enforcement, in terms of what the NPCs think of you/how the world is reacting to you. It's on your sheet, everyone can see it, it's plain what the world thinks of you and how PCs can react to you if they're so inclined. Some folks will become less gung-ho about being a rebel rebel if there are clear, public social consequences, and I tend to think persistent ones any player/character can reference and that become a permanent part of their IC rep are better than one-off RP'd scenes.

Also a thought: advertising? Are any MU advertised outside of communities that are already heavy into MU*ing?
I see ads for places on the Reddit mud sub not-infrequently but it's a very different and seemingly MUD-centric crowd.

RE: First Through the Gate Syndrome
@BetterNow
This is what I hate about it and I feel like I end up being the one to pose first not-infrequently, just because textual dead-air pushes my anxiety buttons more than opening does. If there's pose order it gives you less to react to/makes it a little harder to play off of what other PCs are doing as the scene rolls along. -

Is it weird that it feels to me that base FS3 Ares would be better to use than the FFG thing? Primarily because among the short list of things it's actually designed for includes flying space fighters around and shooting each other?
FS3 isn't awful for Star Wars until you get into Force users, which it's not built for at all. In theory you could handle Force stuff via opposed rolls, though that feels kinda hacky. Or you could rip into the guts of it and code a Jedi system like Spirit Lake's done for a magic system but...that magic system was in development for a literal year and is still in beta after months, so.
It'd work quite nicely for a game that focused on the rebels who were pilots or Rogue One-style spies and soldiers, but idk how wide the appeal of a game like that would be. Jedi are what make that setting shiny. Admittedly, I'd probably play it.

I only semi-jokingly bemoaned with a MUing friend of mine not long ago that I'd lost my ability to complain about the WoD stuff on MSB because it was now just as much Arx and Ares games. Time moves us all, etc. -
RE: MU*, Youth, and LGBT+ Identity
It's hard to speak to what's prevalent in 'the community' about stuff like sexism and homophobia, since different genres (and different games within those genres) are all kind of their own particular ecosystem. Some staffers and players are good about reacting quickly to bigotry quickly and proactively and shutting it down. Some aren't. Some are guilty of shitty behavior of their own. Also I'm a straight woman so wtf do I know? I don't feel like I regularly encounter anti-LGBT players on the games I'm on. There ARE certain players who become way less interested in RPing with you if you don't have equipment they can bang, but they tend to be just as disinterested in straight characters who aren't the gender they're into, so I kind of think of that as it's own thing and not orientation-based so much.

In all the Ares talk of their web scenes and stuff that is one thing I have wondered. How do they keep that zest going when it can be a while between poses? Or is that just a me problem?
The Ares web scenes I've been in have been no different than the scenes I've played on my client, in terms of time between poses. You're just posing in a browser window rather than in your client. I'll admit the idea of scenes that're paced out in days, like forum RP can get, don't appeal to me. The opportunity to do different kinds of stuff is there, though.

Succession is awesome and I loved Euphoria. Zendaya's acting was heart breaking.
Succession is FUCKING BANANAS and I love it. I was turned off by the 'family drama about rich people' concept that felt really overdone but then I realized it was well-acted and darkly funny and 150% insane, so I will ride with this.

Popeye's chicken sandwich is amazing.
I think of it as 'what KFC would taste like if KFC didn't make me hate myself' but yes it's better than Chik-Fil-A, too. Could eat their biscuits for days and days.

I have never so much as encountered people pronouncing it as an acronym.
F-Y-I.
Same. It would never occur to not to just say the letters.

I loooooooooooooove that. Especially with a character that feels tricky to inhabit, they're awesome instant-feedback/occasional gratification. -
RE: OOC Knowledge Levels Question
A log you've recorded in the Ares scenes doesn't get deleted if it's not shared. Not to get too off on this, but it'll go into an Unshared Scenes section under your scenes and you have an option to download it for...awhile. Stays there for like 90 days+ iirc.
ETA: I guess it deletes them after months? But they stay there for...awhile.

RE: OOC Knowledge Levels Question
@faraday
Yeah def feels like it needs to be emphasized you can just stop a scene in Ares and not share it. Even gives you the option to download it for your record-keeping later it you've used the scenes system to play it out. I've always figured the heavy logging/sharing thing on Ares games was cultural as much as anything else and you could, I theory, hack your setup to tilt less toward transparency in ways I don't understand since I'm not a coder.Back in Ye Olden Days the GoT game I was on, Steel and Stone, used Wikidot and most RP was posted, but there was enough PvP that a lot of the moves and counter moves weren't and it worked well enough. Sometimes more revealing scenes would get posted later, after the fall-out from their schemes had come to pass.
-
RE: OOC Knowledge Levels Question
@Roz
Yeah I kind of push back on the idea that a heavy public logging culture means everything is necessarily posted, it just changes the way you have to think about how to handle and disseminate IC information, both on a player and staff level. I've also never played a game with zero OOC secrecy. But how you handle it varies drastically on the kind of environment you want to promote and (probably especially) whether you're supporting PvP. -
RE: Star Trek: Dreadnought Atlas (Name Pending, TOS game)
FS3 has more features, so far as I can tell, just because people have played with it longer and submitted many a feature request. I'm v excited at seeing the other modules built out more to increase the versatility of what you can plug-and-play in Ares.

FF7 was a Playstation exclusive for a limited time. It was released less than a year later for PC (on, like, 8 CDs). I'm not worried about that being the case; I'm worried about there never being a PC release.
3 CDs! 4 if you include the 'Install' disk. I still have my copy of FF7 (and FF8) for PC.

RE: A fully OC supers MU
@Runescryer
Yeah I think you'll get a DIFFERENT playerbase with Ares and FATE but not necessarily a smaller one. Though you can never tell what people will rush the gates for and what they'll be meh on. FATE and OC make a game more appealing to me but I cannot predict people at all.
