      Privacy is a right.

There's no such thing as a right, least of all on someone else's MU*.

Staff should note it down in a policy file: "If suspected of breaking the rules certain expectations of privacy may be violated..." or some such, but there are absolutely no rights. I would argue with @Ganymede, though on the "valid presumption" thing. At least in this section of the community, there's a definite expectation of some form of privacy, but we've seen enough complaints that we can't really presume it anymore.

I sure don't want my "privacy" violated, but I also sure want folks to have proof before taking action on complaints. I can't have it both ways.

@Auspice The number of times I've had to self-explain my search history as "I'm a writer" or "I'm a teacher" astounds me.

    • RE: Privacy in gaming

@gryphter Not to engage in a bunch of whataboutism, but the entire internet is terrible at protecting minors. It would be almost impossible to prove that a person is an adult, or indeed who they claim to be, over the internet. I certainly think that providers of services have some level of responsibility to do what they can, but protecting minors should be, primarily, the role of the parent or guardian.

The ultimate Depression Meal: noodles and/or ramen and/or any dried cereal. Open packet. Remove contents by hand. Shove into mouth.

@Pandora said in Punishments in MU*:

If a player simply cannot work with staff, why are they banned?

Because they cannot work with staff. Ideally in that instance staff should ask the player to leave, but "we just don't want you on our game" is a perfectly valid reason to remove someone from the game. In this case it doesn't need to be public, it's not punishment, simply incompatibility. More people, not fewer, need to understand that this is a legitimate recourse.

    • RE: Separating Art From Artist

@surreality Agreed. Simply partaking of an art (film, book, whatever) doesn't mean tacit approval of the content or the author. I've read the Bible, for crying out loud.

    • RE: How to Approach (nor not) a Suspected Creep

If there is a situation with two other people that makes me uncomfortable, I leave that situation. If that situation is breaking a rule or a law, I report it, else I mind my own business. It's not my place to assume, it's not my place to interject or act the brave and caring knight.

"If that were me, I would be bugging the fuck out right now" doesn't matter. I'm terrified of snakes, that doesn't mean everyone is terrified of snakes and so I shouldn't intervene every time a snake is involved.

Also very odd that a eucalyptus is a white skinned, white featured woman instead of, say, a brown skinned one with aboriginal features.

      alt text

      Eucalyptus trees are white.

ETA: Also probably not a good idea for folks to draw Aboriginal people, you know, on fire.

I vaguely recall some writing of @faraday's, a long time ago now, on constructing character that has always stuck with me. I don't really give an iota about code (except when it breaks, I'm one of those people) but her understanding of character and story has stuck in my brain.

    • RE: Real World Peeves, Disgruntlement, and Irks.

The entire history of the United States, excepting any of the bits involving the First Nations, is of small groups coming together, fighting for what they need or want, and then winning.

None of it is organic, protest is everything, and if you think otherwise you're deluded.

I agree it would be nice to see a more diverse collection of characters.

      It absolutely would.

But I'd hate to suggest the idea that we should all play a POC, or queer, or differently-abled (or whatever the term is now) character simply because we want diversity for the sake of having it.

And no, Australia is not the test server.

For example, @Pyrephox thinks if you want to write properly you shouldn't also MU*.

I would definitely say, though, that if you want to write properly don't try to "write properly" on a MU*. Writing a novel and RPing are totally different animals. The fact that they're different-but-similar enough is probably why it's helpful as a creativity unblocker. You can be creative without it feeling like "still writing your novel."
