@kay Eh, I don't want to RP the same as my actual life.

Been trying to sit down and work on writing, but it's been a pain to really sit down and focus. And nothing is really coming together in my head as easy as it usually does when I'm not actively working on things.

Perhaps I'm feeling a bit more isolated than usual lately, but it's been a couple of frustrating days lately.

My advice would be to write something. Not the thing you're working on, necessarily, but something. A to do list, a short summary of your favourite film/game/novel, an essay on the frailties of life. Whatever. Just something. So sure, you won't have made direct progress on The Thing, but you have written. You have gained skill, and you were productive.

have interacted - OOC - in the past with someone you didn't already know well enough[...]

      Sure can!
The best time for it was when our characters were beginning with flirtatious and florid language. You state, clearly and directly, what your intentions and desires are as it relates to both the present scene and any future engagements of similar kind.

IF your RP partner(s) is/are not open to such dialogue, fade to black until they are. All participants absolutely have to be comfortable enough to discuss these things for any hope of mature conduct relating to adult content.

ETA: This isn't one particular occasion, this is all occasions. I am, however, incredibly picky about my long-term RP partners. If they don't have my back, in the improv/performing sense, then things don't tend to flow well enough for me to enjoy it.

I'm the kind of idiot who starts prepping and cooking a thing only to discover that I don't actually have parsnips, or whatever, and I really should go to the store and get some... Instead of checking I had all the ingredients I needed before hand.

My partner does this and it nearly drives me to distraction regularly. If he had CHECKED if we had tortillas before starting tacos, he would not have to be mad that we're out of them, and I wouldn't have to rush up to the store to get them before dinner is ready.

Well maybe if you kept the pantry stocked with all the random bits and bobs I might hypothetically need, we wouldn't be in this problem!

@faraday said in What drew you to MU*?:

The on-demand access to entertainment 24/7 is part of what sets it apart from other forms of online RPGs.

I've noticed, of late (ie the last... five or so years?), that the demand part of 'on-demand' seems to be more and more at the forefront of considerations for both players and game-runner-designers. Especially in the form of 'this game has to last forever because I want to keep doing this specific thing forever.' Is this sort of open-ended-sandboxy-thing something we should be encouraging, or working away from?

easier to find sane game-runners through word of mouth

Well. It's easier to find decent game-runners. Nobody that thinks "Yeah, I'm going to invite dozens of people into my living room to shit all over my furnishings. That's a grand idea." Is 100% sane.

Feelings are always valid: Attraction, repulsion, anger, whatever; they don't need to be rational, or even 'reasonable', to be so. It's what you do about them that matters.

@apos Aye. Usage is moderately more important that written definition. I don't think a MU* fits the "average person's" idea of a video game.

@derp said in Ideal Scene Length?:

Nor do I think scenes need to strive for any sort of 'resolution'.

I would argue that we don't need a narrative resolution, but we do need an 'end' point for the scene. Otherwise they can (and do) carry on far too long. I'd far prefer short and snappy than long and drawn out most of the time. I don't have the free time to invest in marathon scenes anymore.

I'd also recommend, in the case of locking ad threads as they are posted, to 'enforcing' a uniform template for advertisments. To ensure that information is all we're getting, rather than the biases of the advertiser.

Name of the game, connection details, links to websites/wiki/etc. Brief blurb about the game. Codebase information. Targeted initial playerbase size. Etc.
