Otherwise, it's absolutely just an echo chamber.

An echo chamber crossed with a circle jerk.
And if you count the smoke being blown up game-runners' asses it's an echo chamber, a circle jerk, and a wind tunnel. Nasty, nasty combination.

    • RE: How do you like things GMed?

The problem with having things too open-ended is that the goal isn't always reached, thus there isn't always a 'point' to a scene or plot. Obviously one doesn't want to be lead by the nose, but at the same time in a situation that's too open-ended one also faces the problem of being able to do anything so nothing of worth gets done.

@Tinuviel I, at least, was referring to the latter.

Eh, most folk that object to making solid scheduled plans are folks that have variable or otherwise unpredictable schedules. We don't like making hard "at this specific time" plans because there's no way we can guarantee we'll be available/ready/willing/whatever at that time. Due to work, children, mood, alignment of planets, or whatever.

@Auspice I believe it's an Indian symbol that was absorbed by the various religions originating in and around India. So it could apply to Buddhism, Hinduism, and Jainism to a lesser extent.

    • RE: How to Escape the OOC Game

@Sunny I took it more to mean "return to the hobby without the negative reputation" rather than "sneak in and break the rules." But yes, if you've actually been banned, or people have grievances against you, better to leave that alone.

      Respectfully, I disagree

Then you would be rather incorrect. The fact that words on a screen can elicit positive emotional responses would indicate that they could do the opposite. We wouldn't have a Hog Pit if words on a screen couldn't cause some nature of harm.

I agree that some of us are hardier than others, and what would offend you might not offend me. But at the very base level, words have power and therefore one cannot use the "they're just words" excuse when confronted with something that is, rather aptly, confronting.

This isn't remotely the discussion? Funny, I thought I was part of the discussion, and it seems related to me: IC mental versus IC physical ages and players seeking RP that either just skeeves people or is outright depicting what would be illegal most everywhere.

Yes, it's not the discussion. We're talking specifically about adult players of MU*s playing children in sexual situations. Not what an actor did, or what an author wrote. We're not debating whether such things should be done in or for art, we're debating whether things should be done in our hobby.

    • RE: Consent in Gaming

The best way, to my mind, to help with the so-called "wet blanket" issue is to 1) Make "fade to black if you want/need to" an official policy rather than an unwritten assumption and 2) punish those that seek to cajole or coerce people into playing what they don't want to. I doubt many folks will actually need to be punished, but make it rather obvious how little you care for such behaviour and it'll fade if it exists at all, and those concerned with appearing a wet blanket will be more confident in asserting their right to fade.

I'm somewhat confused as to how this is, at all, constructive. The overall idea of ending "whisper game attacks" is a fine discussion to have, but it has simply descended into accusations and counter-accusations.

@Pandora said in TS - Danger zone:

Then why does it matter so much if they TS

If they TS using NPCs I feel that it's wrong because then one person is being prioritised over others when it comes to that NPC's time. By NPC I'm using my definition, that is an important or valuable member of the non-PC group, a "supporting role" not an extra or a prop. That's not necessarily favouritism, but it is inappropriate use of an NPC. If you want to TS, use your PC for that, I don't care, but if your NPC is being used to constantly boink half the playerbase and the other half just want to sit down and talk politics with them, then it's a problem.

@Pandora said in TS - Danger zone:

any other opinion is just shouted down because there is no room for debate in the echo chamber.

Disagreeing with you isn't the same as shouting you down.

@Pandora said in TS - Danger zone:

I might be putting words into your mouth here

You are putting words in my mouth, a little. I don't care that PCs get rewards or whatever for boinking prominent NPCs, that's actually how the world works in many cases. I do care that the player in question gets extra time with an NPC that others don't for no reason other than the staffer wants to boink using that glove.

ETA: By "NPCs time" I mean available RL time to interact with the NPC. I don't care that the NPC's IC time is mostly oriented towards chasing tail, or whatever, but if it's impossible to get a chance to interact with the NPC because their RL time being taken up with the arduous task of TSing for hours, that's my issue.

@Auspice said in How to Approach (nor not) a Suspected Creep:

So chances are, if you witness this, you're going to want to say something.

No. Chances are you're going to check in with the woman in this example. If you run to her defence without any idea what's going on, you're the dick. You're taking responsibility for people that aren't you. Don't do that unless you know that you need to.

Second, why is your focus on women? Yes, IRL women are more likely to be harassed to the point of danger and violence. But I would argue that harassment is far more egalitarian on a MU*. Would you interfere if a male character was the subject of such alleged harassment?

      C) You can always bug out. Always. You type the word 'QUIT' into your client, and leave. If the people involved don't accept that you were uncomfortable and had to leave, then you don't want to be playing there anyway.

IV: You only are responsible for yourself. So be responsible for yourself. If you are uncomfortable, say so. If you need help, ask for it. End of.
