    • RE: A healthy game culture

@faraday said in A healthy game culture:

Nobody is saying it's acceptable or good. Some of us are saying it's reality.

That's not what I said. I said it's not an acceptable answer.

@faraday said in A healthy game culture:

It is naive to deny the fact that people behave differently

People choose to behave differently. Choose. Putting all the blame on the game itself is taking all the blame away from people that act like fuckwads.

If you run a game, any game, on which people feel free to act like assholes? Either you are at fault, or they are. Or likely a combination of the two. Nobody gets to use "the system we're using is designed that way" as an excuse.

ETA: To summarise: Stop taking away the agency of the players when they act like assholes. There's competitive, and then there's assholery. We're talking about the latter.

    • RE: Battling FOMO (any game)

@mietze said in Battling FOMO (any game):

I wonder sometimes if stating "i feel like I'm behind/missing out" is knowingly or even unconsciously said because it is safer than saying "I'm worried that no one will want to RP with me/think I'm worth playing with now/if I'm not around, including people I like a lot."

There's probably an element of that.

I, thankfully, don't really suffer from FOMO in that I actually fear missing out. I just get bored because I'm missing out.

People with ample time to dedicate to a game dictate its pace more than anyone else, and so a game can launch ahead if I have to miss a week because of work or whatever. Things happen about as fast as they used to when I could do eighteen hour MUing days, and I can't keep up.

So it's less about being afraid to miss out, it's more about being irritated that I can't contribute in any meaningful way because it's just going at speeds I can't keep up with.

@jennkryst said in Combat on a Mu:

One issue with a +attack PC command is that it falls apart when fighting NPCs, unless a object is made with stats that you can target.

Depends on how the command is built. Using @faraday's system as an example, you can set up NPCs in the combat scenario that have stats and equipment as necessary.

Beware of trying to codify what makes for a 'good' antagonist.

A good antagonist can still be a shitty player. A good protagonist can still be a shitty player.

@wizz Oh, yeah, I'm operating in the fantasy world where players care about story over victory. It's never going to happen and players are going to fuck up perfectly good games every time.

Naw. It happens all the time. Thing is, they care about their story, not their role as a bit part in yours. There's a significant difference between "wanting to win" and "wanting to roll."

Yeah, I'm just a grumpy old man. This is why I don't run games, I write stories instead.

      There's no half-sane staff

I think that sentence can just end there.

There's going to be people that fuck it up royally, there's going to be people for whom it works fine, and then there's going to be people that try to get the law involved because real financial exchange has happened and that always leads to lawyers eventually.

@derp Though I'm sure that this isn't why you posted it, you did the right thing.

There comes a point where your own needs outweigh those of the people around you, especially when they're adults that refuse to help themselves.

It's entirely possible she, a young person, shared it because she agreed with part of what it said, and then deleted it when she realised the full implication.

Young people do stupid stuff while trying to do good stuff all the time.

ETA: And I'd probably support the argument that corrupt people in positions of authority, or supporters of said corrupt people, are "fake X-religion." It is difficult to have a nuanced argument on Instagram.

@misadventure said in GMs and Players:

I get the impression that people find trying to short hand your needs in a way players can better link up with each other and staff is a hostile thought.

I don't really understand the point you're trying to make, here. You specifically mentioned email and forum RP, and @Derp specifically said "off-game RP" is "all kinds of a bad idea." Something I agree with.

Not every game is designed with async play in mind, but if you manage to get it to work in your group on a game, that's... probably fine? Personally having an actual 'scene' via @mail or pages sounds like a pain in the ass, but if you make it work then whatever.

That's all happening on the game, though. That's all stuff we can adjudicate and otherwise deal with. But I'm of the view that if it's happening on discord or a forum, or via email, carrier pigeon, smoke signal, or anything that is not on the game then it's not 'canon' and not 'my problem.'

@faraday said in GMs and Players:

And if it's not nonsense and is actual good story development... why do you care where it originated?

It goes back to the lack of administrative ability in the likely event of issues. I honestly don't care if it happens elsewhere, I just don't want to approve of it happening elsewhere. So if I'm seen to allow it, that can be taken as "official permission" or what-have-you and will lead to arguments and problems.
