@surreality 'You are not alone' is fine and dandy.
'You are not alone and also see how fucked up shit gets for other people' is not tactful.

You and I evidently have differing levels of acceptability when it comes to exposure to such harshness. I couldn't stand even the premise of the show, much less the execution.

But please, don't disregard my animosity towards it as simple snark. Snark is supposed to be occasionally funny. This show? This show has caused actual problems for people.

I mean if it's private, I disagree. I'd much rather be told that my style isn't jiving with people than to just simply not get play without being told why.

I was just jawing on the 0 to BIGOT in 60 seconds factor.

Which, I mean... makes sense. WIthout clarification, it does come across as a bigoted thing to do. I asked on this board a while ago if not allowing trans characters would make me a bigot. The answer here was a resounding yes, even though the sensible answer is no.

@surreality I'll grant that living with mental illness or bullying or harassment or whatever else is all too prevalent in society.

What I won't grant is that simply because something exists it thus needs to be seen on screen. I don't want a player at the FIFA world cup gunned down because people get shot in reality. I don't want Will and Grace to end with Jack overdosing on meth just because it happens in reality.

I live my life with enough pain as it is. I don't want it flashed in my face on television without so much as a by-your-leave.

@ganymede To a point I would agree, however in some systems (for good or ill) what a person actually does in a scene determines the way dice are rolled.

they said there was an influx of amputee apps, so by that alone it was a decision based on census rather than bigotry. It seemed pretty clean, to me.

Depending on how one defines 'influx'.

Still, I don't actually care about the answers to any of the questions I've raised from this stafferly bunch. They're not my cup of tea. But still, if one cannot understand how 'temporarily restricting' a minority group is going to come across as bigotry of some kind, I really don't trust their judgement.

@surreality Certainly, an adult is capable of making a decision from a synopsis. A child, for whom it is advertised (at least in Australia) is not likely to do so. Thus the onus is on the production team to ensure their advertising is directed to a target audience is that which is best equipped to deal with such things.

      @surreality said in RL Anger:

Also, seriously, no one is forcing anyone to watch it

Except that is what's happening. Young people are trend-followers. If all one's friends were watching Game of Thrones or Flash Gordon or whatever, then in order to be part of the crowd one is expected to follow suit.

You can't convince the early adopters to adopt if they can't play with their friends.

This is why so many social networking ideas fail.
And honestly this is all just a social network with other stuff on top.

Ban on amputees is far more socially dangerous than a temporary restriction on former pro wrestlers given the current social climate of both mushing and the world alone.

Further, a character's nature (being an amputee) and their concept (former pro-wrestler) are very different animals. Banning concepts is usually fine, if sometimes side-eyed. Banning nature is... rarely done, except that superhero game that banned straight dudes.

@thenomain The only problem I've got with the idea as presented is that it is designed specifically to appeal to new people. That's all fine and good on its own, but if you're advertising it as a MUSH people are going to look up what a MUSH is. And if your thing is markedly different (which is, I believe, the point) to what we already have then people aren't any more likely to bother with the new thing than what we've got.

It definitely needs to be quoted by your client, with a one second (or more, I can't recall off hand) delay, so that all the code has time to run before you put the next bit in.

@Lisse24 said in If you work hard, son, maybe someday you'll RP:

Point. True, but not applicable here, I think.

It's applicable to every situation in which one is trying to impart information. If the information doesn't stick, then it's your responsibility to ensure the information is more easily understood.

@Lisse24 said in If you work hard, son, maybe someday you'll RP:

So, how do you solve that problem then? And no, I don't accept telling someone to keep doing the very thing that's failing them as an acceptable answer.

The personal touch. Ask a person you know, or a staffer, for help in finding RP. People are much, much better at dealing with social issues than any 'tool'. This is what we do in real life, is it not? "Hey, I don't know anyone at this party, can you introduce me?" Hell, have official "first contact specialists" that someone can more comfortably page - because it is expected, encouraged, and rewarded - to get the ball rolling and get them used to things, start a little scene for them and invite a few others.

The answer to almost any social problem is people, not a tool.
