    • RE: Meg's Rice Thread

Brown rice in a rice maker. Add some bullion of choice to the water before you turn it on. Once done, pour in some chopped broccoli, mixed vegetables, whatever.

      Simple, tasty, healthy.

    • RE: The Dark Side of online Role-Playing

I didn't see anything in the original post that implies they're against sex education, is intolerant of LGBT people or is, in any way, anti-sex or sexuality or that there isn't open, honest communication between them and their kids.

I was trying to illustrate that maybe agreeing without putting any deeper thought into it was unwise.

Perhaps you should put some deeper thought into it.

@Auspice Then yes, a doctor is a good thing, I'd ask for promethazine with codeine syrup. It's a pretty good effective cough syrup. Taste horrid though.

@Auspice If it's the head cold from hell that I had, yeah. That's about all you can do. Treat the symptoms.

I missed 3 days of work, left early on day 4 and managed to get through day 5 by telling myself it was Friday and I could be sick all weekend. Still took another week to not feel bad though I was able to go to work.

Fortunately, it stayed out of my chest so hoping yours stays clear.

@faraday if someone is sexually harassing a person that they play with on your game through MSB, i don't think the median really matters. you're free to have your own opinion. i respect that you do. i just don't agree.

And how do they prove it? What's to say that the so-called victim isn't pursuing a vendetta against the other person? Yes, that happens as well. It is also not unknown in this hobby for a clique to target someone so multiple accusers aren't a guarantee of Truth.

All the ones that want it there, I assume.

Or the ones who think of it. As a for instance, all the staff on ESH are strong-willed and opinionated. We don't need a command to take the place of speaking up. Nor would we have trouble, as a player, in shooting down someone who argued about an FTB request.

I honestly didn't consider it needed clarification since it is such an accepted thing on games pretty much going back to when I started playing at the dawn of time. If I want to FTB, it happens. Argue with me? +ooc buh-bye.

I personally don't need such a policy clarification so it just didn't occur to me that it might be necessary. But since it was brought up, I have no problem with explicitly stating it for those people who need things spelled out in black and white before they will 1) assert their right to do something or 2) not do something. It's a small enough effort to make in order to give someone some peace of mind.

"Let's fade to black" is fairly often met with 'Why?' or 'Oh, I wish I'd known you didn't TS before we let it get this far.' or 'Lol, let me just do one more pose, your character will get a kick out of this.' or a dozen and a half other things.

Point. And I just added clarification to the news policies that a request to fade to black should be accepted without question and ending the scene at that point.

@Pandora Serious question: if someone is so reticent about making waves that they're unable to type 'Let's fade to black.' do you really think they're able to type +codered to mean the same exact thing?

@Jessica_Stark Now that you've made us aware of it, that will be dealt with. We don't read every log and some things slip through apps, especially when a bit is restored.

@Andraian Staff is not going to publicly discuss its dealings with another player. The player is free to do so if they choose. They are not banned.

Regardless of whether anyone agrees with or dislikes the policy, it's well documented.

    • RE: Holiday Recipe Exchange

@Auspice That recipe is from an actual NY kosher Jewish deli that's been around for over 70 years. Happened to stumble across it channel surfing and it was Jewish recipe episode on some cooking show.

ETA: making schmaltz is a bit of a pain in the ass but it really does improve the flavor 10 fold. And it stays forever in the fridge once you've made it.

Well, if you're making knishes, you need to know how to make latkes too.

      Potato Latkes (pancakes)

      1 1/2 lb potato - finely grated
      1 1/4 cup onion - finely chopped
      2 eggs - beaten
      1/2 cup flour
      1 cup matzo meal
      3 tsp salt
      1/4 tsp pepper
      1/2 tsp baking powder

      1 Tbl chicken fat (optional)
      cooking oil

Note: adjust potato/onion ratio to your taste.
Press potato in a strainer to remove excess water
      Combine all well
Heat oil and chicken fat in skillet till sizzling
      Form patty out of mixture
Fry in oil till golden brown on each side
      Remove to paper towel
      Eat while hot
Good with a dollop of sour cream. Apple sauce isn't bad either.

      Notes:
Check Jewish section of supermarket for matzo meal
Chicken fat can be excluded but improves the flavor

How to make chicken fat (schmaltz):

Remove fat from raw chickens/pieces: small bits of skin should be included
Freeze fat till you've got about 8 ounces
Chop a small onion and garlic clove(s)
      Season with 1/2 tsp salt
      Add fat/skin and simmer

Fat will be rendered into a liquid
Simmer for 15 minutes or so to get it well seasoned
      Strain into a jar
Refrigerate for later use: stays a long time
Eat leftover skin and onions for a yummy, artery clogging snack (gribines)
