RE: Critters!
@testament I feel the same way. All of my adopts are senior cats. It feels wrong to let a cat linger in a cage for their last years, or worse, get put down because they're older and nobody wants to adopt a pet that's likely to pass within 5-6 years. My current two are 13 and 17 respectively, and I love having them in the household. The younger one is still quite bright-eyed and loves to play. The older one is less inclined to play but will follow you around the house for affection. The elder of the two actually came from a pair of siblings, but the sibling sadly passed a few years ago due to a heart complication that was missed on his general exams. I still miss Val, he was a great cat. But I will continue to adopt senior cats so they can spend their last years in comfort, knowing they are loved.

RE: Real World Peeves, Disgruntlement, and Irks.
@rinel I have a friend in NO whose been prepping all week, and is trying to determine if he'll need to evac, and where to if so. I feel terrible for him since it doesn't look like there's really any good place TO go for him.

@L-B-Heuschkel I think hit it on the head. He jsut can't see that other people also need help - if they're not as disabled as he is, then they're not worthy of assistance.
This is something that we've dealt with with my oldest son. He's not physically disabled, but he has a number of mental/emotional disorders and was told by psychologist after psychologist that 'it wasn't his fault' that he was the way he was. Which is true but also very misleading. So rather than learning coping mechanisms for his various disorders, he spent a lot of his childhood believing that how he was, his behaviors and actions, was how he would always be and that he should just always be forgiven because that's how he is and its not his fault. They really kinda screwed him over by not clarifying better that while the disorders are not his fault but also that he has the ability to mitigate and control his actions/reactions, and that he should do so.
All of which is to say that I had to spend the better part of his teenage years trying to undo the damage of his younger years by showing him that even though he can't control the thoughts or feelings, he can combat and mitigate them through various means. But he still carries a level of... entitlement... about his disability that it seems like your brother shares. So I definitely sympathize with trying to correct a lifetime of thought paths and beliefs that are dismissive of and/or harmful to others.

Huh.
I wish I could say this to a particular parent because this is legit. Just this morning they were describing how sometimes their kiddo has to put on several pairs of socks before they find one that feels right (thus leading them to be late to school), plus a lot of other things you guys described.
SOCKS ARE THE DEVIL!
Seriously, if you knew how much time I spend having to find the EXACT RIGHT pair of socks out of all of my socks... I will literally wear a single pair multiple days in a row because I know they fit together and I might just cry if I have to keep trying to re-match all my socks together every day...

RE: Good TV
@kestrel So... all his issues aside as a person, Joss Whedon is REALLY good at writing a compelling, interesting cast of characters. Including the main character.
And its not to say there aren't movies with interesting, quotable main characters. Its just.. they aren't the huge blockbuster movies anymore (with a few notable exceptions that are mostly animated/Disney films).

RE: Crafting Thread Part ?
@crawfish Oh don't you worry, if things keep progressing like I think they will, I will have a whole new round of commissions! I love having things made to commemorate important things that happen to my characters.

RE: Health and Wealth and GrownUp Stuff
Living room furniture is being delivered this weekend!
I ordered the original set back in July. Delivery kept getting pushed back because apparently the set I ordered is coming from overseas and ports keeping opening/closing thanks to COVID still being a dick. So I went back through their site, called the sales rep that helped me in the store... he helped me to cancel my current order and place a new order for a set that is in stock. It will be slightly less cool than the original set I'd ordered, but it will be comfy and fit better with my asthetic and its cheaper too!

RE: Health and Wealth and GrownUp Stuff
Domino's has really been making a comeback the past 5-10 years. They nearly went under in the late 90's/early 00's because Papa John's was the new hotness and EVERYONE wanted the new hotness. But they stepped up their game and pulled it out. And thank God for it. They've treated their employees better than pretty much any chain I can think of.

RE: Health and Wealth and GrownUp Stuff
@macha I live for Domino's thin crust as someone who is trying to count carbs. So I definitely understand.

RE: The ADD/ADHD Thread (cont'd from Peeves)
@faraday I can tell you the difference. My oldest son went through a very low-budget, no-care district. They treated kids like criminals, it was ridiculous. And God help you if you have special needs in that district. My son spent 3 of his 4 high school years in one of those shitty little 'built overnight' trailers that's only meant to be used for like... temporary emergency needs. They made it a full time structure, then stuck all the special needs kids into them (there were three total). He was tormented by the 'normal' kids... and treated like he just wasn't 'applying himself enough' by the faculty. I literally had one of his teachers roll her eyes at me when I mentioned that he has multiple disorders, as listed in his IEP, and that she did not seem to be providing any of the accommodations he required. (Thankfully, she was let go by the school system within a month. Apparently she was of the belief that all of these learning disabilities were just laziness on the part of the students and parents, and that she was going to prove it by showing how they could get through just fine without any help. It went over about as well as you could expect.) My son barely scraped through high school and largely just because the school was uninterested in holding him back so they kept pushing him forward regardless of his grades. He was given no options, no control, and no voice. He now struggles to find work because he couldn't get into college, and he hit the job market the year before COVID hit. So he has very little work history to recommend him.
My youngest is currently having his senior year schedule tailored to his individual needs, he has accommodations in all his classrooms, his teachers are communicative in their needs. The school is communicative in any issues that arise. He's got C's and B's (and one D, he's struggling with Earth Science). He is not on the normal diploma track because he has decided he doesn't want to go into college from high school. He wants to get a job for awhile and look at his options and take some time to figure out what he REALLY wants to do. So the school is tailoring his educational plan to get him a 'completion diploma' rather than a normal diploma. In every way that counts, it will act as a high school diploma. But if he tries to register for college it will tell them that he is missing core curriculum classes (geometry and chemistry) that he will have to make up before he can enroll. This was his decision. They asked him what he wanted. His IEP meeting is next week, he will be attending, and he will be helping to select the classes that will be best for him for the remainder of the school year. He is much happier, much less stressed, and has a far more positive outlook on his future.

RE: Health and Wealth and GrownUp Stuff
@derp Yup.
Really, I couldn't even be mad at the neighbor. Had it been a situation of abuse or neglect, I would have wanted the neighbor to call that in, and they had no context to use other than what they could see. So I get it. It still sucked at the time, though.

I would buy some soap!
Masculine scents come in one of three varieties:
Variety 1: "Here is this strange blend of chemicals with no discernable scent which may not be even appropriate for anything ever" ala Axe. Ladies. You all know the joys of Axe. Dudes -- easy on the Axe.
Variety 2: 'wtf dude did you just like go hump an evergreen or something'? Why do people think men need to smell like pine needles and sawdust? Why has this variety of scent not changed since our grandpa's grandpa's grandpa was probably out literally humping a pine tree or whatever?
Variety 3: Musk. Just. Fucking musk. WHO decided that this gland-juice is something we should proudly wear? It's like the dog that goes and rolls around in animal crap like warpaint and then just looks so damn pleased with himself... not... that... my dog does that. NO. You can't prove it. Shut up.
Anyway. Something with a better blend of scents that doesn't cost as much as a mercedes would be great.
I would like to add Sandalwood to this. Somehow, in some way, sandalwood became synonymous with masculine. Its a nice enough scent but hooooooooooooooly fuck a very little goes a looooooooong fucking way. Please do not bathe in sandalwood.
Also, wtf is up with scents like 'Sea Spray'? They smell like NOTHING. Know why? Because the ocean STINKS. Don't smell like the ocean.
I do admit to liking the leather scent, though. But, I mean, new leather smell. So like... Leather + Sage/Vetiver? Fuck yeah, I'm down.

RE: Critters!
@arkandel Its the lack of scent. Cats love web meetings because they get all the coo'ing praise and attention, but there's no extra people there to make them tense. So they can parade about in front of the webcam, getting cuddled and petted by their person, and getting the verbal affection of others!

RE: Critters!
@arkandel The odd part is... if you put Gus into a wooded area with relatively few larger predators? He'd probably get along just fine. But frankly, we keep suppressing their natural instincts as house cats because it's inconvenient for us. Scratching the furniture? No, bad. 'Hunting' your feet/hands? No, bad. Zoomies at 3am because that's when instinct says is best to hunt? No, bad.
We love cats, but WE'RE turning them into derps by forcing them to live on our terms.
