    • RE: Diversity Representation in MU*ing

@Sparks said in MU* Gripes and Peeves:

I got challenged by a POC friend ages ago (fourteen-ish years, I think?) to try playing exclusively POC characters in MMOs and other online games for six months and see what happened, and I found it an eye-opening experience. Not just socially—in a breathtaking amount of online gaming there's a surprising amount of sudden racist toxicity you experience when you change your avatar's skin color, far more than I'd realized even though I knew intellectually it existed—but even technologically as well.

This was truly a trip on WoW back in the day. Full disclosure, I am white, but I often tried to make my avatars black -- not for any more complicated reason than just to see if I could, which an absolutely shocking amount of times turned out to be "not really." When I pointed out that you couldn't really make a dwarf or blood elf (at the time, for example) with very dark skin tones to people their responses were almost always very dismaying to me, the mildest usually being some variant of "who cares?"

Like...you should care? It matters? How do I even need to explain it to you? It was, yeah, eye-opening about the community at large and even (very unfortunately) about people in my own life at the time.

Should I be yelling at the damn kids to get off my lawn?

      Yes.

Let Star Trek be something that doesn't conform to your expectations.

      Sheesh.

In other words, "lower your expectations."

Trek is this big, loud, nihilistic, generic sci-fi franchise now just like everything else, because that's marketable to the broadest demographic, and that's what's most important to the studio at the mo'.

Like, I'm not even a diehard Trekkie and I'm still disappointed to see the direction they've taken it. It deliberately looks, sounds, and feels like everything else out there now and that's lame.

Chet, speaking plainly but trying to be respectful, I don't think you're in the right state of mind to run a game like this.

So to sum up, @GreenFlashlight arbitrarily picked the wrong name to represent her otherwise valid and independently observable peeve, and because she made the choice to try and laugh it off instead of apologize, y'all are going to be passive aggressive and mean and take potshots for the next seven pages or so.

Just checking, carry on MSBing MSB.

I've been rewatching Buffy the Vampire Slayer for the six billionth time because I've had a super bad nostalgia streak, and this time I've been following along with the Buffering podcast, which does episodic commentary, just so I can get a different perspective on what I saw.

Anyway, they recently posted this meme and I NEVER MADE THIS CONNECTION, EVER

Holy shit, ANYA'S BEST FRIEND WAS ORIGINALLY CECILLY, THE LADY WHO REJECTED SPIKE WHEN HE WROTE HER A GOOFY POEM AS A HUMAN AND LEAD TO HIS DEATH

Then he gets vamped, something really shitty must have happened to her and she became a vengeance demon, and then 150ish years later they get to have this fun awkward little moment.

Hahaha man. Fan for like 15 years and tons of rewatches and I never caught that, because it's so subtle!

    • A New Laptop!

Hey! So as I mentioned in the RL disgruntlement thread, my laptop is super dead, and unfortunately we are on a super tight budget that makes getting a new one not workable right now. My son and I need a machine with a little versatility for remote schoolwork, and I am planning on using it to learn some programming languages and database management.

I started a GoFundMe here, anything any of y'all could give towards it would be so, so appreciated.

    • RE: Oh, Humanity

The Tale of the Teleporting Creepy Gernan Lady.

So I actually worked at two consecutive K-Mart electronic departments in two different states, the first in Virginia and then in Utah.

One day in Virginia, this elderly woman came in to the department looking for something, and stayed to make me incredibly uncomfortable by flirting with me. I am sure she was just having a laugh and teasing, but I remember being really unsettled because it lasted FOREVER and she had this cataract in one eye and a strong German accent and I don't know, the combo wigged me out for some reason. One phrase she kept using over and over again was, "boy, you're a sweet Spring chicken, eh?" And then she'd wink and cluck her tongue.

Anyway, this wouldn't have even made my top twenty Weird Shit moments in my life, except that within a few months for Reasons, I moved out to Utah and started working at the K-Mart there.

The second week after I began, I shit you not, the same fucking lady came in. And she absolutely remembered me, because she began flirting and repeating the same phrase. "Boy, you're a sweet Spring chicken, eh?" Wink, klk-klk. Didn't say a thing about having met me before.

I fucking thought I was hallucinating, so I just stared at her and said nothing, and after a minute she left. Would have been appropriate for her to cackle like a witch and disappear in a cloud of smoke or something but like, she just gave me a little frown and walked away without another word.

Utah is a popular destination spot in the winter, we get a lot of international tourism, and the store was near a major highway, so this German lady on holiday stopping for supplies or whatever made sense in retrospect, but...man. I have never had an ASTRONOMICAL coincidence like that before or since.

Really? Is that so? Seems like every time I turn on the news I am being told to feel guilty because I am white, heterosexual, monogamous, breed other white children, and I identify with the gender that was assigned to me at conception.

You know what? I hear this a lot, but seriously, this is so fucking dumb. Nobody (outside maybe a small fringe?) is literally telling anyone to feel guilty for being CIS-white-whatever, you're just being exposed to the disadvantages of anyone who isn't and feeling guilty, and because you don't know how to process your guilt you decide "outrage" is the correct response.

Iiiiiiiii wasn't suggesting you or anyone do otherwise. I was just saying that if people think that the behavior we've seen here over the last few months is not only acceptable but somehow appropriate or ideal for the community and that nothing should change (or...can change? Which...what the actual fuck), I find that attitude more than a little sad, I've kind of had my fill and I'm ready to move on.

I am extremely jealous of my kid. I took him into daycare and apropos of absolutely nothing, he started ducking around corners and ninja running from shadow to shadow, and if I did that at my workplace they'd probably have me committed.

Gaston is just a backwoods hillbilly who spent his time punching wolves rather than any of that there fancy book larnin', so a sister Teagan would be super great! 😄

She's Voice of House Blackram and like a super genius but kind of bad with people, while Gaston is...less bad and stabs stuff, so they're like the Wonder Twins!

Except a section when criticism is not allowed as the current rules of the ad thread state is not discourse civil or otherwise it is a commercial followed by a pep rally.

That wasn't at all what I was talking about, if you read my comment again.

And if you read my other comments about the ad thread, you'll see that I agree with you. I suggested having just one "Game" thread for civil ad/q&a/reviews/feedback all together.

I think starting a little more cautiously like we are is a good idea, and if it starts to seem kind of redundant to have a separate Constructive thread I'd also be on board with them being merged. I think we've all just reached the point of exhaustion with people immediately leaping into the "IT'S TIME TO EXPOSE YOU FOR THE PIECE OF SHIT YOU TRULY ARE!!!!!!" stage of discussion.

      WHO WHO, WHO WHO

      • Woke up in a SoHo doorway, a policeman knew my name
      • Spent roughly half my teens and twenties in the southern US, so I can say y'all and do a pretty OK accent and manage not to sound like an ahole.
      • Never going back though.
      • I was raised with ferrets. I LIKE THE SMELL, FUCKIN WEIRD RIGHT
      • I like metal, punk, funk, folk, some rap, some electronica...I mean really you could play a mouth harp in a cave and I'd probably listen to it.
      • I love, love trying new food. Bizarre Foods is like, my one reality show I love. Favorite cuisines are fairly spicy or just interesting, like Indian. "Weirdest" thing I've ever eaten was probably balut, and I felt awful about it and had to eat it with my eyes closed.
      • I do have one tattoo, on my chest above my heart. It's the Deathly Hallows, all gnarly like it was made with bent sticks and thorns. I'd show you but...there's a lot of chest hair involved. I got it this year and I want more!
      • I've done hallucinogens and weed, but never anything harder and never will. Hell, once was enough for acid...wasn't a bad trip but yikes, intense.
      • I'm a manager at a company that operates a network that transports Medicaid/Medicare patients to their appointments.
      • I was raised Mormon but became an atheist at around 20. WEIRD RIGHT
      • I've had lots of pets, but the kiddo was bitten when he was four and is still really timid around animals. I love animals so we're working towards something! Dream is to ride horses with him some day.
      • HOT SHOWERS 4 LYF just kidding the inevitable water wars will probably take these away from us
