Remember when these were pretendy fun time games, before everything apparently got real over...a difference of opinion when it comes to political correctness? I guess? What the actual fuck is everyone so angry about?

Yeah, I mean. Individual people can be incredibly shitty in the brief time you're obligated to deal with them as customers, but these corporations are willing to literally ruin their driver's lives for a quick buck. (See Uber and their car loans. Predatory does not even begin to describe it, they basically create indentured servants.) Human life is appallingly cheap to them, there's really no comparison.

Not you necessarily. It just seems like the atmosphere in the original thread was "my, I find this kind of silly" and then suddenly everyone came in swinging like they'd been personally assaulted. I get people tend to get sensitive about their pastimes, but it's not like the game creator was implying anyone who played oWoD was racist or misogynist. (Presumably.)

Why do I still have a subscription to this?

I've been asking myself this a lot lately, aside from Netflix making some really awful calls in response to the Chappelle crap. Some of their original content is interesting, but I will literally never watch most of it.

Or Jarringly-paced, awkward Andy physical comedy Twin Peaks in 1866?

................because both of those sound amazing

When she says the application process seems deceptive, and is more involved than you attest to, that is a somewhat influential opinion. Whether it is right or wrong is mostly irrelevant.

Ganymede, you are a smart and sharp lady, but that is simply false, here or on WORA. I haven't been around much longer than @The_Supremes and I don't feel like I've seen anyone take anything anyone says as a given or drop an opinion and walk away unchallenged. We're a grumpy and fractious lot.

There's maybe a lot of pressure to conform to popular thought sometimes, with this thread and this game in particular for whatever reason, but essentially telling this person to sit quietly and play nice is unfair and untrue to the wild, bitchy spirit of this place.

For the record, this has been a pretty civil back and forth and trying to squash it like that is really the only ugly move I've seen so far.

You could have left it at this:

My suggestion: loosen up on the application process. A lot. Players these days are far more tolerant of policing once they have their PCs, rather than weeding out people prior to the approval. This is mostly laziness on the part of players, I suppose, but the trick from your perspective is to get the customers in the door.

And left a much better taste in my mouth, is basically all I'm saying.

What does it matter, aside from trying to make a child feel bad?

Man, god forbid I just hurt a child's feelings. I'm not sure what the fuck they're doing here, kinda seems like there are larger problems if they're regularly hanging out on this forum.

But with the sarcasm out of my system:

Speaking for myself, didn't really think this one through and it is admittedly shitty. I happen to know for a fact that the guy I was referring to was upper middle class and white, where the phonetic spelling trend we were specifically sharing a laugh over is all the rage, but that's not really an excuse. Spelling is arbitrary and mutable, I can see how it's a very hazy line between outright racism, etc. I am genuinely sorry to anyone I offended who did not speak up.

Which Conditions apply which modifiers to which rolls? Oh right, go to the appendix. Then keep that page open for EVERY time a Condition comes into play. Want to remove your Condition? Act on the Condition or address the source of it. Nice and vague, WW, keep up the good work. Oh, but there's examples of how to resolve them. No, wait, those are just suggestions, you can solve them in other ways that aren't explained. And look! There's improvised Conditions, too! Lets run down this list...

      1. Get a Condition (or make one up on the spot).
      2. Track its effects through the appendix (or have it all written down somewhere because yours was 'improvised').
      3. Play out effects of Condition as appropriate (don't forget to explain the improvised Condition when nobody is able to figure out which one you have!).
      4. Decide to rid yourself of Condition.
      5. Use one of the example resolutions in the book (or make up your own!) and hope that whoever decides these things is in a good mood/likes you/etc.

...That is genuinely not that complicated. 😛

EDIT: I'm not trying to be flippant, I just honestly think you're getting worked up over nothing. It's a simple plus or minus to a roll, which a lot of people were doing anyway in the old system, they've just made up an official system to categorize and track it.

I poked around a little bit and I am still SUPER PUMPED about this.

One suggestion I'd make, and maybe you might be working on this already, but CGen and especially CGHelp is very bare bones. You include a link to the Fate Core SRD in your news files and it's great, but it's more oriented towards GMs. I think some unique examples of how players might set up aspects, stunts, and extras in this particular setting would go a long, long way for making the system feel more welcoming and show off how versatile it is, especially for people who have never played it. This definitely seems like a game that might be a little more geared towards self-starters, but it couldn't hurt.

    • RE: Good TV

I would have personally stopped short of saying it was bad before I saw the third episode, but now I'm struggling to find positive things to say about it either.

It's hard to put into words exactly what's wrong, because on paper everything happening should be cool as hell -- a grim sci fi story about the rise of a crime lord on a barren desert planet, featuring a man who has been witness to some of the biggest events in the galaxy and now just wants a slice? How is that not fucking rad??? -- but the execution is...off. The sets and costumes are too weirdly clean and brightly colored. Everything looks like it's made of plastic and rubber to a degree that seems almost deliberate.

Parts of the premise are kind of baffling (he's supposedly taken over Jabba the Hutt's criminal empire, but up until the third episode it's like...literally just him, Fennec Shand and two pig aliens? That barely even qualifies as a street gang. Why anyone takes them seriously is never explained.) Any fight choreography involving Fett so far is frankly pretty goofy. It's understandable given that he's not a young guy but with at least one action set piece an episode, that's a looooot of upcoming awkward, clumsy fighting to swallow, and the pacing throughout is painfully slow. There's a speeder "chase" scene where everyone involved appears to be moving at maybe 15 miles an hour? It's so weird and like I said, just off.

Still, we're not talking about 80's pen-and-paper tabletop where GMs have to physically flip through reference books and all that nonsense busywork they're trying to make it sound like. You could literally set the condition itself and its resolution as notes on a character bit that a ST or another player could check on the fly. Seriously, it is just not that hard for the end user.

Make Rocket Raccoon as an example.

      Annnnd Bender Bending Rodriguez.

      Perhaps the Stainless Steel Rat.

Yeah, instead of or in addition to random examples actually putting together character sheets is a great idea, I think it would help some of the concepts behind CG gel for Fate newbies, especially since some of it is kinda abstract.

Another thing I noticed is that the application news file is pretty vague in terms of what limitations, if any, are in place aside from not just setting yourself up as supreme leader. What's the skill cap? Refresh, if not 3? How will players buy extras?

One idea I actually liked from the other couple Fate games I've seen is an additional restriction on alts, where only one or two are allotted a high Refresh to buy powers. It'd be kind of fun to give people your one (or whatever) "crazy-go-nuts" powerful character and then encourage the rest to be a little more mortal in my opinion, but YMMV.

There's a considerable difference between "I don't like this, so I'm not going to bother to understand it" and "This is complicated and vague." You can personally dislike new things because they're new to your heart's content, but call a spade a spade.

Dude, you have at least one fan of this idea who thinks it stands on its own merits. I would absolutely love to see a more freeform sort of game that isn't tied down to a specific IP like this and I've been boiling over with character ideas. I really wish I could offer more than just encouragement right now 😢

Ultimately, do what you feel is right in your heart!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
