      @auspice

I know what you mean, it's always been intimidating and confusing to me, haha, but I kind of love it. I think if you really limited the "improvised casting" element of the system by ramping up the penalties to do it, emphasized the use of/bumped up the number of rotes, and kept the powerlevel relatively low for PCs, it would fit the setting and discourage the insane powergaming that induces that headache for most people maybe?

And I think a familiar system would draw rather than repulse players, I feel like that's an argument that gets pushed a lot here ("I wanna use WoD 'cuz people know it!"), but I dunno. Why do you think so?

The Magicians - this would be a blend of book/show. The elements chosen would be in support of the game environment. My pain point here is I don't know what system to use. The setting is more PvE. There's little combat magic to begin with. And if it's a system without ready-made code, I'd need a coder. (I could break FS3 to work and have theorized how I'd do so, but Faraday would probably cry a lot.) I've already done some work on this idea, as well. I have a metaplot, policies drafted, etc.

      WANT. WANT SO BAD.

I think system-wise the thing I would want the most is something that reflects how difficult magic is and how much it can just straight-up fuck with you.

My initial "Post-Coffee Slump Not A Super Ton Of Thought Gut Feeling" is that Awakening 2.0 with a cosmetic paint job would actually fit the magic system described in the books really well. The "Conditions" would translate really well into Yantras, the system for reaching really describes how you feel about Quentin's abilities versus Alice's, Paradox and the Abyss can be repainted as "fucking up your finger placement or whatever/intrusions from the Neitherlands," etc.

Please do not murder me 😢

any positive stuff will remain while the negative gets booted.

... To the other board, on the same forum, where anyone who wants to can see it. Again, why does it matter so much that people can't drag any and every single issue into the ad? How does that behavior not seem the tiniest bit petty?

'Cause I'll be blunt, even for the legitimate issues, to me almost...eh, seven or eight times out of ten, it's seemed like the major blowouts here have been as much about if not more about the spectacle and wallowing in the ensuing meltdown, rather than finding any real resolution or justice. I'm just saying.

      @dariryu

Re: ALL THE FINAL FANTASIES MUSH.

This was tried a few years ago by the M3-circuit. It lasted about 4 months about 8 months and before the game actually shut down, had fairly collapsed under the sheer insanity of its own players and setting.

ETA: I forgot they actually closed-closed due to RPGWorks closing, but the faction implosion and player issues were a big deal with a lot of characters dropping.

There was also Final Fantasy MUX, which was full consent, ALL THE FFS, and which ran for like... ten years or some shit. I played there a few times, with years passing in between, and it was a lot of fun. There's nothing inherently wrong with either the setting or consent-based gaming.

how about just let people criticize or bring up negative experiences without letting it devolve into a bunch of RL character judgments and horrifying vitriol?

That is a very good question. Why can't we do this?
      ...
I'm serious. Why is it that players and staff of any given game don't let this be an okay thing to do? Because...
@wizz said in Make MSB great again!:

it very obviously wasn't happening on its own.

      Because of that old chestnut:
      alt text

It really isn't rocket science. Text is super easy to misinterpret, text makes people feel more comfortable letting themselves get crazy aggressive to a degree they never would in real life face to face, and having a referee or two and rules to follow generally helps more than it hurts.

Nobody is saying we're not capable of rational discourse, this is just a medium for it that is very difficult if not practically impossible without those things, for literally everyone. We're all only human.

Yeah, as far as I can tell it's literally just that. It's also mmmmmmaybe little wonky since we implemented and then removed downvotes, by some tiny margin? But there's no real formula to it and the "divide by x for your OFFICIAL MSB SCORE" is just for funsies.

As it stands, by page 4 of our current advertisement board almost all of those games either never opened, closed, or have re-opened under new management/with new themes/etc. I think your concern only applies to a volume of games that hasn't existed in the hobby for a long time.

No, I get you. I think the wording in the rules is a little confusing like @faraday is saying, but in my opinion you really have to try to ask a question about a setting or theme that is just super negative right off the bat, and keeping it sort of "Call and Response" format would really limit the ability to go too off the rails.

      So, for example:

ADVERTISEMENT POST: "Hi, we're a supernatural game with wherewoofs and spoopy witches and vampirinos."
1st Poster: "What's the tone you're aiming for, Twilight or Interview With A Vampire?"
OP: "Super grimdark! Fuck everything amirite, these wounds won't seem to heal, this pain is just too real"

1st Poster: .oO(What does that even mean...BETTER START A TOPIC: WHAT DOES GRIMDARK)

2nd Poster: "MY TURN! Let's get down to brass tacks: do vampires fuck"
      OP: "You know it."

2nd Poster: .oO(Gross. BETTER START A TOPIC: VAMPIRE SEX, GROSS OR REALLY GROSS???)

"Is this L&L game or grimdark"
Enthusiastic player A: "It's totally grimdark. I love it. The players are so helpful."
Less enthusiastic player B: "Well it says it is grimdark but mostly what I see is just nobles playing house."

Are these reviews? Criticism? Is B's answer somehow less valid than A's just because he's not as positive about the game?

Player B is maybe being a little snarky, but it's still being critical of an idea, not a person. If I'm understanding correctly, I think it works fine for advertisements to also be Q&A, and then if someone wants to expand/discuss an answer or topic they move to the discussion board. I mean, we were kind of already doing that from time to time anyway.

Is it? Because that’s how I read it.

Yeah, it is, because he was suggesting that the criticism (constructive or otherwise) isn't allowed because it...happens in another thread. He compares this to a pep rally, for...some reason. The criticism isn't behind any sort of wall, it's just somewhere else which is not opt-in and is visible to everyone by default. No one is forcing you to be supportive or to post positive things in the advertisement thread, you literally just click into the other board. Why two clicks instead of one is such a massive downer or some sort of forced positivity to some people continues to seem incredibly silly to me and proof that there really was a problem here.

Except a section when criticism is not allowed as the current rules of the ad thread state is not discourse civil or otherwise it is a commercial followed by a pep rally.

That wasn't at all what I was talking about, if you read my comment again.

And if you read my other comments about the ad thread, you'll see that I agree with you. I suggested having just one "Game" thread for civil ad/q&a/reviews/feedback all together.

I think starting a little more cautiously like we are is a good idea, and if it starts to seem kind of redundant to have a separate Constructive thread I'd also be on board with them being merged. I think we've all just reached the point of exhaustion with people immediately leaping into the "IT'S TIME TO EXPOSE YOU FOR THE PIECE OF SHIT YOU TRULY ARE!!!!!!" stage of discussion.

People saying something is good while they are not allowed to say something is bad is utterly pointless.

      Advertisement board's rules:

This is not the place to criticise or attack either those games or their runners. If there isn't already a thread in the Mildly Constrictive or Hogpit sections for them then please feel free to start one, and we will link between them for easy access (but check first!).

      That's a misreading, dude.
