Reactions to 08192015 Update

I've had that happen too. It usually resets itself when I go back to the unread thread page after reading the first one.

Damn this is horrible. I'm on the ew I don't like wagon, too.
@Cobaltasaurus If it fixed legit problems, fair enough. It fixed 'em while making the forum look like utter shit in the process. But I can accept the idea that it might be a necessary trade, even as I despise it. I don't think its hysterics, its just my opinion. The new layout has that utterly transient feel of youtube/facebook comment sections. Where nothing said really matters, its just an accumulation of white noise. That said I'm sure I'll survive and adapt. After all, its not like we say all that much meaningful here, either.
There is a difference between saying 'ew, i don't like it' and 'this is utter bullshit/trash we didn't need how dare you etc. etc.'.

I know that nodebb is dedicated to the latest and greatest in hipster tech, which thus means "eventually consistent" databases and their ilk, but this is getting a little preposterous:
This is a(n obviously) annotated screenshot of the "unread" section:
Can you see a problem? (Hint: Sesame Street did many segments on this very issue!)
For the record, this was after a full refresh and waiting for everything to settle down traffic-wise.
This happened to me before the update all the time, and if you hit the Unread button, it should get fixed. So this is not a product of the update.
-
Same. It seems like occasionally it takes the forum a few moments to catch up to what you have and haven't read. Usually works itself out after you click on one of the unread threads.
-
I would say that if you have to make a skin called Readable, there may be a general issue.
And honestly even that fix is not the best, but tolerable.
So ew, still.

Except usually the names for skins and themes are all but random, and I am using Readable right now and the only difference it has from the one I was just using (Spacelab) is a font change. So this isn't really an argument to put stock in, I don't think.

The counting on the unread has been around forever.
though I have noticed a lot of 504 and 502 errors since the update as some have mentioned, I never got one before now it seems I get a couple seach session and the speed is slower. Hopefully the issue with the memory is sorted now that Glitch has mentioned keeping an eye on it. I will edit this post if they keep happening.
Second minor complaint there is no longer the automatic spell check in posting. I will miss that, since I transpose letters quite a lot in typing. -
Such as bad gateways showing up for no reason
Legit question, this is not sarcasm: Are they showing up for reasons then, now? Because I was pretty continuously getting bad gateway errors and couldn't reach the site after my post around midnight, no matter how much I cleared cache, restarted my browser, or at one point even restarted my computer (unrelated to this, I just had to install a driver).
EDIT: nm, I see this was already addressed.
lag time (I know that WTFE says it's slower, but it's a lot faster for me)
I haven't noticed any speed differences, as long as the page will load.
and people suddenly being told "denied!" when trying to log in.
Now if that shit never happens again, that's at least one plus to the 'fix'.
I swear to god have you people been living under a fucking rock? Facebook does this like twice a fucking year. Google does the same. Shit changes.
...hahahahahha. Have you been living under a fucking rock? Any time there's a major interface change in a web tool, the people who don't like it make a huge fuss, whether it's facebook, google, or even yahoo (especially yahoo since it's mostly used by fucking troglodytes who don't know any better and fear change even more).
Or better yet do you yell at people who aren't using rotary phones anymore?
If somebody showed up with a pile of shit in their hand and smugly told me that it was the newest in ShitPhone technology and why can't I catch up with the times, I'd probably walk away very quickly. I know, I'm a Luddite.
We get it. You don't like the way it looks now. That's sad for you, it fixes problems that needed to be fixed. It isn't "better" because it's "newer", it's better because it's fixed legit problems with the board.
Cool? That's... great? There's like one guy complaining about 'new technology', but the other complaints seem more like "I took my car in to fix some bugs with its power steering and when it came out they'd also given me giant spinner rims with 'I LOVE ASS' in LEDs, and a paint job of Mohammud fucking a camel along both sides."
Thank you for keeping the board up to date, @Glitch. The login problem was a huge fucking pain in the ass. I'm not actually holding you responsible for the interface changes made by some faceless assholes elsewhere on the internet. You're doing your job, inasmuch as this is a 'job' of any kind.
But the new interface and appearance are shit, and just like with Facebook and everywhere else on the internet that caters to more than five people, it's going to get bitched about. For most of us it's not personal, you just happen to be standing in the general direction of where our ire is actually pointed.

New post, because goddamnit. This is not progress, this is UI suicide.
- Composition/comment elements being at the top of the post instead of the bottom is objectively terrible. There's no reason at all that after reading a long ass post one should have to scroll back up to the top to hit reply or quote.
- Edit being behind a menu box otherwise used for social media shit makes no goddamn sense. Also, see above re: scrolling up. So if you read over your post you're adding two different clicks just to get to edit when you notice something wrong.
- It's not just me, right? Typing in the composition box vanishes off the bottom of the screen? Even when I resize my browser so it's nowhere near my toolbar shit still disappears off the bottom for the last line or so. Having to hit enter a bunch of times just to have buffer so I can see what I'm typing is insane.
This isn't directed at @Glitch, I understand he has no control over this shit unless he just doesn't update the board (which, no), but fuuuuuuuuuuucking goddamnit.

Well, it's more like, "Hey, here's a giant lavender room with eight chairs, five tables and a barstool, feel free to come in and mostly do whatever you want." Then, it gets painted bright white and there was some trouble with opening and closing the door on the first day, everyone got glasses that let them see it in a different color and the barstool was moved behind 3-dots on the floor. I mean, yeah, not what you were expecting or used to, but as was mentioned, I didn't actually do the design, just the upgrade.

I hope it's fixed. Also, it looks like the gateway issue has gone away, but I'll be keeping an eye on it.

I actually just experienced the whole "why do I have to scroll up to reply to a post" as I was reading yours. I'm sure the people that made this software are not used to posters like you, and thus, never considered not seeing all of one post in a small space.
Edit being behind a menu box otherwise used for social media shit makes no goddamn sense. Also, see above re: scrolling up. So if you read over your post you're adding two different clicks just to get to edit when you notice something wrong.
I don't mind the edit move so much, since it seems like it might be used less often than the other ones, but I have no data on that.
It's not just me, right? Typing in the composition box vanishes off the bottom of the screen?
Mine used to do that and it also used to be fuzzy/blurry for some completely unknown reason. It cleared up for me, however, and I think it might fix if you expand the response screen to full size?
-
@Glitch
It does, thanks. The response screen thing. Hopefully they'll fix it, though, since having to do it this way means not being able to scroll through for replies to different posts unless I want to keep clicking that button repeatedly. -

I'll give you that your other points have merit to them. This one, however, I will not. While, yes, there are a few people just saying: "Hey this change has caused me X problems". There are also several- not just one -people in the thread screeching "I didn't ask for this! This is the fucking worst thing in existence!" and it's a pretty shitty attitude.
-
-
Clearing my cache and restarting fixed my one very weird experience. I'm good with it now. Sure it has issues, but it's plenty usable.
-
I like it now. The skin I am using is aces.
-
I don't see a skin called "aces".

Well, the entire point of creating a website is to present something visually appealing and easy to use to share information with an audience. In a forum like this, I don't think there's much question that it's meant to appeal to a wider audience too.
So, given that, and the general reactions a while back when @Glitch posted a thing about this and said 'check out the new look', and the response to it even then was 'hate it, yuck, no', So yeah, his point actually does have merit, and the people that you write off as screeching and having a shitty attitude about it are just as much target users as anyone else on this forum. They have a voice, they offer feedback, and not working to make something that appeals to them is counterproductive. They do not like this. They stated before it went up hat they didn't like it, in some cases, and it happened anyway. They're allowed to express their frustration and anger about something that didn't need to happen happening. That desn't make it a shitty attitude.
You may not agree with the point, and that's fine, but the point has merit on its own.

A forum like this is meant to appeal to an audience. Aesthetic is also individual.
So, given that, and the general reactions a while back when @Glitch posted a thing about this and said 'check out the new look', and the response to it even then was 'hate it, yuck, no',
You, @TNP, @Tempest and @Thenomain expressed distaste for it. @Tempest was also mostly neutral about it. @HelloRaptor and @Coin showed a preference for it, despite @HelloRaptor's later distaste. So out of all of the users of these forums, 4 had a negative opinion and 3 had a positive opinion, if you want to consider me as someone with a generally positive opinion since I actually did the upgrade. That's hardly an overwhelmingly negative response.
So yeah, his point actually does have merit, and the people that you write off as screeching and having a shitty attitude about it are just as much target users as anyone else on this forum. In response to the highlighted:
- You certainly "voiced" your opinion, repeatedly
- "offer feedback" is a generous term for the verbal vomit spewed
- Taking the thoughts of people on these forums into consideration is certainly a good idea, but as I pointed out earlier, it was a tiny minority that felt moved enough by the upgrade to even voice opinion, let alone a negative one.
They do not like this. They stated before it went up hat they didn't like it, in some cases, and it happened anyway. They're allowed to express their frustration and anger about something that didn't need to happen happening. That desn't make it a shitty attitude.
Expressing frustration and anger is understandable. @Miss-Demeanor and @Misadventure both had a bunch of early difficulties that sorted out after a bit. Even if they don't much like it as it is now, they've adjusted. @WTFE had a strong negative reaction as well, but he was at least willing to see some small benefit in the upgrade and realize it wasn't me who designed it and that I didn't do it to frustrate him. @HelloRaptor similarly doesn't like it, but also accepts that I didn't upgrade just to make his life worse.
It did need to happen, whether you agree or not. The theme change didn't need to come along with the other stuff, but that is a result of selecting this forum software.
Disagreeing with the upgrade is not a shitty attitude. Disliking the theme is not a shitty attitude. Expressing frustration with the change is not a shitty attitude. Losing your goddamn mind over it and then continuing to defend your reaction as somehow appropriate to the situation is a shitty attitude.
Come to terms now with this, because upgrades will happen again. Hopefully it won't be as jarring and the experience of going through this one will smooth the transition for people (particularly the cache clearing and some of the backend problems I had that resulted in 504s and 502s), but upgrading for fixes and features is going to continue.

I'm fine with it at this point. Its not perfect by any means, but its hardly the steaming pile of shit its been getting portrayed as. I really like the slate skin and I don't have any issues with the layout. I haven't gotten a Bad Gateway since early yesterday morning, so I consider that a plus. It fulfills all my basic requirements for a forum, I can log in, stay logged in, post easily, and thus far all the assorted buttons still work. So go ahead and consider me in the positive column.
-
I actually like the smaller font size better, because I tend to like smaller font sizes. I had to get used to the old version because the font sizes were huge there, to my preferrence.
I think I'm using the Spacelab Skin at the moment, and it works pretty well. I like it. Some functional changes are dumb (like the edit and quote buttons being up at the top, for instance, instead of at the bottom where they used to be). But otherwise, I like it just fine. I hope we can get the plug-ins we used to have.
-
Still hate it. It's not that something I liked was suddenly changed either. I hated the old version too. This software is horrible. But unfortunately, this is the only WORA lite in town so I lived with it. Now I hate it even more because it's that much harder to read. So yeah, it sucks.
