It's snowing where I live, so everybody at the company that I work for decided to "work from home." However, it's full of 40+-year-olds who don't want to try new things, which is ironic because they're all techies. They refuse to use something to the tune of Discord (or Ventrilo/TeamSpeak/Mumble/whatever), and instead insist on calling me every 10min on my cell phone to ask me questions like "where did you put this file?" or whatever. Then I have to sit in a 20-minute conference call between eight people for every inane detail of this shit. They then use this as basis to insist that telecommuting is "inefficient."
I honestly resent the fact that I might get a "talking to" about my inappropriate use of company email to send out the invite link, because this is real company, this is srs bsns, we don't use newfangled shit like software that wasn't written 15 years ago. Btw you're required to have decidedly unhip things like "HipChat." Get a job, kid. Get a real job, like us. A real job.
Will I turn into these people in 15-years' time? Is this the cycle of life? My God, shoot me now.
-
Weird. At my work, its a question of which messaging and voice system someone wants to use. Make them learn! Teamwork is a thing, including easy to use tools.

There are companies that mine consults with, but they use decidedly unhip things like HipChat because those companies are also run by 40+-year-olds who are out of touch. Basically, I get no respect because I'm a Millennial and therefore my outlook is invalid. I swear I'll never turn into these people.
Brb, telling the kid who delivered my calzone how beneath me he is.
-
Much as I loathe HipChat, it integrates well with all the other software that I loathe. JIRA, TestFlight, etc. So there are valid IT reasons in some cases to use it, if you need everything to interoperate.
Of course, more and more the Silicon Valley companies are using Slack instead, which is like Discord for business. (Well, since Slack was out first, I suppose more Discord is Slack for gamers.) And Slack is at least less obnoxious than HipChat.
-
@Sparks I honestly regard things like Discord, Slack, etc, as being TeamSpeak/Ventrilo for people who can't use computers, i.e., most people over the age of 35. Yes, even the techies.

Well, considering Slack doesn't have voicechat (by default), I'd have to disagree with that.
I like Slack because I prefer text communication to voice. Don't call me. Please never call me.
-
@Auspice I've never used Slack, so I'll have to just take your word for it.
New gripe:
I just saw an illustration of a child being violently raped by an adult on Facebook. While I'm all for free speech, there are some things I really just plain don't want to see, and this is one of them. So I reported it. Apparently, this doesn't violate their community standards.
Yet "hate speech," which in reality is broadly defined as anything progressives find offensive enough, such as calling someone a "faggot" or a "cuck" or whatever, is against their community standards.
???
Okay.
-
What's worse? I think FB still considers photos of women breastfeeding to be "sexual nudity."
So, yeah, their standards are kinda fucked.
-
@Auspice Well, I suppose it is "nudity," but still. If someone can post their child rape illustrations on Facebook, I can't think of a good reason why someone out there should be allowed to get triggered by tits. But you betcha if someone posts response to their violent pederasty illustration that reads "this is some faggot shit," they, somehow, would get a ban.
I can understand banning both. Expecting public decency out of your userbase is one thing. But when you combine all this crap it's plain that they just want to push an agenda.
Indeed, we need to remove everybody's racist uncle who is only guilty of having backwards views (which is to be expected of people who are decades older than us), but we can't kink shame degenerate NEETs who masturbate to yaoi lolicon or whatever that garbage is called. I beg of you, shoot me now.

What the actual fuck is this? THIS is probably why they won't listen to you.

What the actual fuck is this? Definitely not an argument.

What offends me a lot is the double standards.
Nudity or harsh language being 'inappropriate' for whatever reason because kids shouldn't see it... I could stomach that. But in the same work (movies and TV shows are usual culprits) they show people getting violently killed, so what gives man? Are tits so much more offensive than killing someone?
-
Are tits so much more offensive than killing someone?
Yes. So are bad words, apparently. I recall being on MU*'s where you can kill people IC but you can't slur them IC. Frankly, I'd rather someone call me a honkey-ass kike white boi than kill me, but maybe I'm insane for that. Maybe the pen really is mightier than the sword.
-
If anyone hasn't seen 'This Film Is Not Yet Rated', I cannot recommend it highly enough. Documentary on the American movie ratings system and how f'd up and non-sensical it is. Which I knew, but it gets into the secretive and weird way the ratings are assigned in ways I found really interesting. It's a few years old now, but I suspect most of it still applies.

That all made so little sense that my racist heart laughed hard.

S/HE SAID BEING CALLED A DEMANDING, CLASS CONSCIOUS, UPTIGHT, JEWISH PALE BOYSENBERRY WAS BETTER THAN DEATH.
I may be wrong about the boysenberry part. That may mean young or new, carefree or a masculine-feminine mix of identity, or twink behavior.
I'm helping.

If it's any consolation, we aren't going to get rid of free speech in America any time soon. I mean, Europe never really had it, so, there's that. Hasn't the movie rating system kind of lost its credibility, anyway? Who honestly cares about movie ratings, aside from parents who don't want their six-year-olds seeing gorefests and BDSM?

It is positively hilarious to hear a Millennial complain about having their outlook invalidated based solely on their generation.
It's absolutely sublime to have it happen while in the same message 40+-year olds are dismissed as being out of touch.
THE IRONY! IT BURNS! THE GOGGLES DO NOTHING!

@WTFE ...while ranting about double standards and hypocrisy. Let's not forget that part!
I guess being old and stupid about computers means I have more space in the brain to dedicate to things like "self-awareness", which is, in case this is a life lesson that some folks still need to learn, different from "self-importance".
Dude. This is where our generation fucked up by handing out all of those awards for just showing up. Whoever came up with that idea needs to be taken for a GoT-style walk of shame.
