BSG: Unification
-
Battlestar Galactica: Unification MUSH is set during the First Cylon War, 50 years prior to the series. William Adama is still a teenager, the 12 colonies of Kobol have only just recently united under a common banner, and the humans are losing the war.
The MUSH follows the adventures of the newly-christened Battlestar Galactica, leading Taskforce: Phoenix. Galactica is one of the first Battlestars to come out of the new Scorpian shipyards. Lacking time for a proper shakedown cruise, the crew must deal with its quirks in the heat of battle. They must also deal with each other, putting aside old rivalries and prejudices as they band together against a common enemy.
An enemy that, left unchecked, will annihilate them all.

Just a slight clarification: There's a plot afoot and after this weekend the PCs will be transferred to a smaller ship in Galactica's taskforce and not Galactica itself. The updated summary blurb is:
The MUSH follows the adventures of the Timber Wolves, a special operations unit in the nascent Colonial Forces. This small band tackles the toughest missions across all Twelve Colonies, putting aside old rivalries and prejudices as they band together against a common enemy.

I really liked my time on this one BSG game I played on. Cerberus, I think it was?
But I've never really gotten into the series. Really. Never watched it.
I have an itch to play on a sci-fi game. Is this the game for me? I mean, can I pick up the feel through RP, or am I going to be so lost because I'm not familiar with the show's canon?
-
@Ganymede Several players have come in with no prior BSG knowledge and done just fine. If you've played on Cerberus you shouldn't have any trouble. Since it's set closer to the Blood and Chrome timeframe, the plot doesn't really follow the canon events from the main show anyway.

And most folks are more than happy to help answer queries if you do happen to come across something you don't understand. Generally, however, yeah- you can get by without. Faraday's even written up her own planetary info (and each planet has listed on the wiki its RL equivs for society/cultures).
-
Really like the site look/layout. Kudos.
-
@Ganymede It's not terribly hard. You are fighting robots! You are kind of racist against people from a different colony from you (I'm sure there is a list of what each colony's sterotypes are SOMEWHERE)
Not a lot of other things to pick up on.

What do the humanoid Cylons look like?
-
@Misadventure Robutts.
-
@Misadventure There are no "skinjob" human cylons in this timeframe.

c.f. BSG: Razor. At the point this game takes place the attempts were very poor quality, as the citizens from the original Earth hadn't encountered the Cylons. End of line.

The flashback first war scenes in BSG: Razor are still about 10 years after the game 's timeframe. I'm not sure what you mean about original Earth people encountering the Cylons... (edit upon realizing) oh, do you mean the Final Five Cylon peeps? Yeah you're right, that hasn't happened yet.
-
What system does the game use?
Yes, I know I could find this out y checking out the wiki but feeling lazy today. -
@ThatGuyThere FS3.

Yeah. It's the new edition of FS3 though, which improves various things.

I'm sure that @faraday will come to hate me for saying this, but --
-- this game is excellent. Top down. From the simple CGen process to the wiki to the code, the game is well-designed, constantly improved, and clearly loved by the players and staff.
You should really try it for a war story.
Having done this shit for 20+ years, the game takes me back to a time when game owners really took a lot of time to put together their environment. It reminds me of RobotechMUSH, where I first got my MU*ing feet under me. There are events. There is RP. And, bizarrely, it is all apparently done by a single staff member.
I like the World of Darkness. Played it for years. But this reminds me that I have missed a lot of innovations and MU*ing experiences, and I regret having been so lazy and ingrained so as to have been so focused on a single genre.
Hats off here. Really. I've missed a lot in the past decade, clearly. And I now wish I hadn't.

Aw thanks, @Ganymede. I worked really hard on AresMUSH and the wiki, so it's nice to hear when folks like it. But beyond that, I have to give credit to the players. We've got a good bunch of folks who go out and do stuff. Lots of IC drama while keeping OOC drama to a minimum. I also have to give a shout out to @EUBanana, @Three-Eyed-Crow and the rest of the TGG crew, since my vision for the game was basically "TGG in Space" (minus the permadeath) The way the PCs are clumped together in a flat organization and the regular mission structure is basically inspired from TGG.

Just so I'm not left out on the love-pile, ditto everything @Ganymede said. Also she wrote all her own code and stuff and it's amazing and really clean and easy for noobs to use and well integrated and... I could go on
It's a small game but I've gotten great RP very consistently, and I prefer this a thousand times over to sitting around playing a werepoodle sexymancer who sits around having a latte with the faepire archduke while they discuss the plot of the month that I didn't actually get to go on.*
*Not intended as an actual description of any WoD game, but close enough.

Love the ability to do chargen via the web. It was simple and painless, even as someone new to FS3.
