I'm always going to use "lol". It's been engrained from a young age despite attempts to stop. I hate myself a little for it.
Related, however...
When people (on whatever communication platform) type "heh" as their laugh or whatever.
I know it's text, but man ... Sounds passive aggressive and extra asshat-y every time. I've had people swear up and down it was a chuckle, or some variation. Whatever.
Just saying it out loud - "heh".

I started using "heh" decades ago. Hawk (Avery Brooks) from Spencer for Hire said "heh," and he was a badass.

I may be a little strange. I know it's weirded a few people out before. "OMG you actually say 'heh' in IRL."

An ex of mine set up an irc bot to harass people who said "heh" too often. It's part of why they are an ex.

I don't think @thebird was comparing 'lol' and 'heh' so much as simply stating that there's a text-related habit that also irks her. And I'll have to agree that 'heh' does tend to sound a bit sarcastic and snarky, to me, but I think it's different depending on what MU* culture (different MU*s do have different cultures, after all) that you came from. And lol, to me, tends so sound a bit... lacking in effort.

Personally, I try to avoid both of them. Acronyms in general, although I'm guilty of using them every now and then when I get excited or am in a hurry (generally 'brb' when I have to go in a hurry or 'omg' when I'm talking about the Walking Dead).

I use heh if I'm mild to moderately amused, or lol (or some variant) if I'm moderately to greatly amused.

I was unaware there were camps who only used one or the other, or that it even mattered to anyone.

This. Never use lol. Often use heh. Heh means it's amusing. Not laughing funny but it got an amused smile for a moment.

I've always found 'heh' to be disconcerting to me. I've never been sure if the person using it was actually amused, or irritated with me. I find it off putting and will typically withdraw from the person when they use it on me.

This, likely, comes from the fact that I outright asked someone once if they were amused when they used 'heh', and got a noncommittal, beating around the bush answer that just confused me more.

'hehe' or 'haha' or even just 'ha' typically makes me less confused.

When I see heh, I tend to read it as the other person knows I was attempting humor but didn't really find it funny.
And then Hah as mild amusement and up from there.
I think the most annoying thing to me with heh is the only person I have known that used it in real life was a college roommate I never got along with.

There is a common "audio emoticon" on Second Life that literally says "lol." Pronounces it. As a single syllable. In the land of sheer what-the-fuckery that is SL, the fact that people would voluntarily use that may have been the most dumbfounding. (The people who had things like fully articulated giant spiders as their avatars did make me think that SL at least had the potential to be pretty fun if it weren't full of cretins.)

@BetterJudgment, do you mean saying it very close to 'lull'? I think this is the preferred pronounciation. I sure as hell prefer it to 'el-oh-el', which is is a remarkably lame substitute for actually laughing.

'Loll' spoken out loud I consider to be the same as 'heh'. E.g., something that is considered funny but not funny enough to make an effort expressing your amusement more than a lazy sound. A mild effort for a mild amusement.
