Which canon property/setting would be good for a MU* ?

Unpopular Opinion: scrub the SG1 Lore, because the original world where Ra was the ONLY alien involved, was hella more compelling than 'Watch MacGyver be plucky!' repeated, ad nausium.

@Misadventure I'm not a huge fan of the genre ( @surreality being excited about it enough to make a game was enough to get me want to give it a try, but that's because it's @surreality), I just think it can be done if it's just right.
If my heart was in it at the moment I would still be working on it. It's just really not at the moment. Will update if that changes, though.

Ship adventure would be just like a PrP or Staff Plot.
The main game takes place at the pirate port.
People don't like to lose anywhere, but there are game genre's where people losing is not considered a cardinal sin.
There are genre's where character loss is not a cardinal sin too..
The real way to do it is to have a minor barrier of entry, and staff willing to say: No. (This is something every game needs, not just this genre)
As to the type of pirates, anything can be done right. Personally I'd do it in a setting that was alternate world, with a history similar to ours up to a point and then going it's own way.

I've seen this idea get adapted once, but it had great promise. Cowboy Bebop. The only problem was that it relied on the bounty hunter dynamic seen in the show. You had to get players, sometimes OOC strangers, together for a crew to even be authorized for a ship. Take the feel and universe of Cowboy Bebop, stick a crime syndicate faction like the one featured on the show, a bounty hunter mercenary faction that operated as a loose band of PCs with a bounty board, and a dedicated police force of 'space marshals', that would operate like Texas Rangers, and would be the 'hand of fate' with the two other factions.
Three competing factional dynamics in terms of order, for each type of pirate fan: authoritarians, libertarians, progressives. If you liked a military system, you'd pick the crime syndicate, if you wanted to snipe and hunt and social, you'd pick a bounty hunter, and if you wanted to make political statements, you'd pick a badge.

@Lithium There is one teeny problem with this idea.
On Monday, you are in port. On Tuesday, you are in a PrP/Staff Plot where you must sail for a week or more for whatever. Then, on Wednesday, you are in port. A week has gone by for you, but other people literally saw you two days ago.
Consider: TIME Pirates...
-
@Jennkryst This is what alts are for. Or redshirts. There are ways to handle this that don't break continuity.
A lot of people will RP downtime things or intrigues of various sorts in 'we sailed off the edge of the map/grid! Back in a week... ' sorts of situations, and there's no lack of downtime things people can do, from training scenes at sea to gossip and intrigues to shark hunting or random assaults by a sea monster.
-
@Jennkryst there have been PrP's that take extended time as long as there has been MU*'s.
This is not a new issue.
It is not compounded in any way by this theme.
Any RP not in the PrP either happened before, or after, or there could be... ship RP! Time is fluid in this environment.

Your heart being in it is the reason I liked the idea.
There are a number of people here who are pretty good and if they're peripherally involved in a game ("I'll handle some +jobs for you guys") it's a good sign but nothing I'd get excited about if I don't care for the overall concept.
But again if the same people handle a project as their opus and they start pouring their hearts and souls into it then that is something to take note of, and worth giving a shot regardless. It doesn't happen often, as we're all a bunch of jaded burnouts in our little dark hearts, yet when it does...

@popes tried the board game?
-
@Arkandel If I pick it up again, I'll definitely let you know, though I'll warn it's very unlikely. I forget if I own the relevant domain name for one year or two, but either way, it more or less comes down to how I feel between now and then.
There's no droplet connected to it now, but the domain to keep an eye on is herebedragons.wtf, so if something appears there at some point, and it's an extremely baroque mediawiki, I'm working on it again. It sure as fuck isn't going into conference committee again here, that's for sure. Just not enough time in the world to battle everyone's hand-wringing worst case scenarios and inaccurate assumptions and get anything at all done.

I still want a League of Legends MU.
So much good lore on that game.

Always wanted to start a mush based on H. G. Wells Time Machine.
With realities and zones handling each different 'timezone' and having the 'past' effect the future, the possibilities would be fun.
Same with a Doctor Who mush.
Maybe one based on TRON with some fun virtual reality.
Then of course, Guardians of the Galaxy.
And to throw one out there that will make people lynch me and beat their heads to remove the imagery:
Smurfs Vs My Little Pony -- The apocolypse death battle.

I downvoted this so hard that it broke the downvote system and now we can only upvote.

I suggested an idea like this once, only instead of criminal syndicates, everything is ruled by megacorporations. It basically mixed Cowboy Bebop, Serenity, Tales from the Borderlands, the Xia: Legends of a Drift System board game, Offworld Trading Company, and Android: Netrunner in a star system far, far away.
I altered it and came up with a fantasy version set on an island world that incorporated DUNE, Earthsea, Ars Magica, and Houses of the Blooded.

1st or 2nd ed.?Hell, I don’t care. You could use Gurps if you really wanted. (Not really. Please do not use Gurps.)
The 1st ed Roll and Keep system has had a bit of a new following lately, and even the wacky swordsman school system will also probably be acceptable due to that. 2nd edition has a lot more narrative input, so unless you want to harden the rules more, I’d bet you’d have a harder hill to climb.

Discworld!

....I would play the fuck out of a game based on Melanie Rawn's two "Dragon Prince" trilogies.
-
The Runelords, pre Gabon and not locked into following canon.
-
See I was looking at it from the opposite, viewing that 2nd would be a gentler touch for the MU environment where (supposedly) we're narrative people.
