You might have to wait for someone else to fork his repository and update it on
yourtheir own since I don't think he's doing anything with nodebb anymore.FIFY.
I'm frankly not committed enough to that particular plugin to go in and try to reverse engineer it and figure out where it's broken. Block User still works just fine, and that's native nodebb. I don't have to worry about that one breaking unless it breaks for everyone, everywhere, and then the node team can work on fixing it. If someone else comes along and fixes it, or someone makes something different, we can give that a shot.

Another vote for sealing the HogPit in concrete and dropping it to the bottom of the Marianas Trench. We can perform all the critiques, evaluations, and warnings without it.
-
When we previously considered doing what Runescyer has suggested, we were concerned about what would occur if something contentious occurred at a MU and link were to be provided into an area subject to the General Rules. Some members voiced their opinion that they would rather not be around that kind of vitriol, even if it occurred somewhere else.
I concur that we can critique a game's content or decisions without resorting to finger-pointing and name-calling, but that means heavily policing the remaining forums. While there is always a concern that the anger that can arise from the Hog Pit will boil over, it's arguably better than having the fires pop up in places that others would expect to be safer.
-
Safer? I mean....haven't we proven the past day that nothing, even in the correct PLACE is really....safe? People have voiced dissent and upset and many other things recently in what was formerly the appropriate place, and were banned for shit that was not nearly as bad as what others have done on this forum and NOT been banned for.
There's no safe spaces.
-
When I said "places that others would expect to be safer," what I meant was "places where the sort of material that is normal for the Pit does not exist."
-
I'd be content for it to come back as it was, as much as I mostly lurk. It was an interesting insight into the games I'm in, and let me know who to avoid based on how they post here.

@ganymede While I agree that having a venting place can have positive benefits, it's more likely to blow up a community. gestures around wildly I think that there are plenty of spaces now where MUers can go to 'shittalk'. MUS doesn't have to be that space. It's not like Discord hasn't made 'a board of our own' an extremely viable concept.
This isn't WORA; and speaking as someone from those days, that's a damn good thing. I'd rather not see this board headed down that path. Like I said, we can all provide the needed functions here (evaluations, warnings, etc) without bashing. I just see the Hog Pit as a relic that's outlived it's usefulness to the community.
If it absolutely must be brought back, opt-in is the best way forward, I agree with that. Possibly even limiting it further so that there's a way for those that don't opt in to be able to only view and respond to HP threads where they are mentioned so that they can defend themselves, or confirm/deny events they were witness to?
For years now, I've asked admins on games I've been on if they would allow their games to be advertised here on MSB. Some have, but more likely, they refuse because of the lingering legacy of WORA; even without the recent drama, MSB has a reputation of being WORA 2.0. Some of this can be attributed to the usual shiattalking by the usual suspects whose behaviors have been exposed here; but, IMO, I think the presence of the Hog Pit adds some truth to those claims.
Anyways, back to Lurk Mode...

There are consequence for shit posting - sometimes the consequences might be worth it sometimes they are not.
There are truths revealed in the Hogpit, but there are deceptions supported to.
The side that is the loudest or has biggest discord echo chamber might have the biggest bite, but they might not be in the right.
Creepers are revealed. Little people have a voice. Players learn about where to play and where not to play.
But shit posting always has a cost, a cost that some of us are paying now, myself most def included.
The immediate satisfaction of saying how much one hates soso and soso for such and such is rarely worth it.
But unveiling a serial stalker is a good thing.

@spitfire Discord is the new Pillowfort.

Forums like this also allow easier cooling off period than places like Discord or Skype. Skype is instant so the 'You're being an asshole about my friend!' keeps ticking along as people rant. Although, it also allows boiling of tempers. So, double edged sword?
-
@icanbeyourmuse The main upside of a place like MSB is that it's accepted all comers; it's been a neutral ground. Posters sometimes barely tolerated each other - but they did tolerate each other. Different cliques sometimes clashed but ultimately persevered.
In my opinion we should not be splintering off. If we do then it beats the point. If there are multiple places to post then there's no central hub for everyone to come 'home' to once they are done playing a specific game. If you need to be friends or be liked by whoever is in charge then there goes free speech. And the sense of history and community is based on a central identity across all games; I might play different characters on different games and be known by different names, but they go away when I stop. @arkandel on MSB is one person - one identity - with a history that goes back months or even years.
I hope y'all weather this. But if not, that'd make me sad - but it's okay, too.

The benefit of the Hog Pit, as seen with more recent games, is that when someone does rant on about some aspect of the game, we have the benefit of having others who were involved come in and provide context or an alternate viewpoint on what had happened.
Generally speaking I would tend to agree. Although you also have counter examples where you have someone posting on here rejoicing about something they did to someone on a game, getting a bunch of their friends to dogpile about that, and basically trashing someone on here with distorted accounts of reality while the victim themselves has no ability to counter what is being said about them because the victim doesn't have an account here (and they successfully intimidate anyone from speaking out against them because, well, then they'll be next).
Of course, most (if not all) of that cadre is now banned from here, so maybe that won't be an issue going forward.
-
@phaedrus It's much easier to rewrite reality when the other witnesses to your behavior are forced not to speak, yes.
-
Pls bring the hog pit back. Opt in, of course. Sometimes I need to scream into the void an occasionally when the void screams back it contains a grain of truthiness that I need in that moment.. but I can't spleen on mildly constructive..it feels wrong.
-
@phaedrus I'm still here! PS (pspspsps), a lot of it was noticing your attempts to skirt around the game rules for new characters twice. Also, the copious amounts of other people who reported you, like Glitch, one of the founders of this forum
But go off, I guess, if it makes you feel better.
Maybe you'll get upvotes from those still very upset about people not liking them over a decade ago. Find your own clique to call home.

Yes, please! Bring it back! I want to bitch about the travesty on Liberation that the mage wiz just put his entire sphere through.

Everytime I see phaedrus I think Phlebas, of the poem The Waste Land, and the book Consider Phlebas.
