@spitfire The answer to your first two questions is me. The threads will open in a day or three, probably. Thats just a guess.

Don't worry, @Ganymede is going to back off from all her ridiculous power tripping, undo bans and changes like she is this magnanimous person who didn't get absolutely trounced by the MSB users who collectively gave her the middle finger, and will just keep the people she doesn't like banned to try retaining some modicum of authority over the plebs, which is the whole point of her being admin here.

Lord Acton?

What happened here?
-
@alzie I believe it is forbidden to currently explain what happened here. Suffice to say a lot of people got justifiably angry at one another, and let that justifiable anger lead to some less justifiable behaviors. I don't want to sound disingenuous by pretending I think everyone involved is equally culpable or that I don't have a side, but even so, I think it is fair to say no person involved (myself included) did anything that drenched themself in glory.

Please never bring the hog pit back.
-
Doesn't not having the hogpit rather defeat the purpose of what this board was originally created for? A place where people can express their displeasure/rants about games.
-
No. The Hog Pit was a worthless, vile shit talking club that the word is better off not having around. Like go smoke a cigarette or rub one out instead.
-
@jomomomo There is a certain irony in posting that with PITCREW boldly next to your name. It was opt in and invisible unless you sought it out. Seems a reasonable compromise from an admin perspective, and it was very well-labeled.
-
@noodle-mcdoodle The pitcrew group no longer works actually - the Hog Pit is (was, I guess) visible to all.
However, you can do as I do and just click the little "Watching" button at the top of the thread and set the entire forum to Ignore. Then at least you don't have to see it coming up in your recent posts list.

There's a lot of previous functions that are simply broken. I'm led to believe those functions were plug-ins and, when the underlying platform was revised or upgraded, some of them stopped working.
I'm not smart enough with tech to confirm this, though. I sort of figure such functions were like mods for a Steam game.
-
@ganymede From looking at the NodeBB documentation and forums, it looks like it's as simple as making sure that the category is setup to only allow specific groups to access it. I don't think there's a plugin involved.
-
It had effects that would go beyond just the message board subscribers. It wasn't like this hidden enclave beyond the view or senses of anyone who "opted out." The amount of manufactured and unnecessary drama that spilled out into the games themselves, discord chats, etc. is incalculable. And yeah - I subscribed because one day I was minding my own business and suddenly started getting paged by all these people asking me about some made-up, misconstrued BS that was emanating from that cess pit.
-
I will admit that what's there is still over my head, but we will look into improving the functionality here once we resolve the pending issues.
-
Sure. I'm no nodeBB expert, I just have some extra time today and pretty decent google-fu. From some other posts in the tech support section of the NodeBB forums, it looks like it's possible that the category settings that linked specific categories to specific groups got lost in the migration and would just need to be setup again.
That said, enjoy your weekend. Figure out the looney online RP forum drama later.

So.. It spread just like anything people upset about regardless of what game/hobby/whatever it is complaints about? Humans talk and gossip, no matter how much they claim they ignore it and don't do it. Who would have thoughts humans were being humans that were upset about something they perceived as offensive/perceived as a person being awful and that spread out of a single platform. If upset feels didn't spill into other things we would not have constant coverages about celebrities' or political figures.

It is really really hard to have the self control not to watch the hogpit if one knows they are being attacked on it. I will freely admit that despite knowing it would be best, I didn't have the self control to walk away and not read while I was being attacked and while friends were.
I have mixed feelings on if the hogpit should shut down, there are pros and cons, nobody is going to be happy with any choice and I am glad it is not my choice to make
-
So, since I'm the guy that set this up in the first place:
I'm pretty sure that this was working. It wasn't working during the transition because a lot of the groups got set to be openly visible. Their specific settings didn't get transitioned over with the new account. I had to go in and manually lock down some of them.
When someone mentioned that the Hog Pit was no longer opt-in, I was asked to go back and make it so. So, that's what I did.
You're right in that it has nothing to do with a plugin on that one. That's just a setting in nodebb.
What's currently broken re: plugins is the Ignore User function (that little eyeball thing next to the username) because it hasn't been updated for ages and ages and hasn't been compatible with nodebb since at least at least December. I know that one was really popular, but there's nothing we can do about that one until the plugin developer makes an update.
-
@derp The guy who wrote that plugin hasn't logged into github since the last time he updated something, which was September of last year, so I honestly doubt he's going to be updating anything soon. You might have to fork his repository and update it on your own since I don't think he's doing anything with nodebb anymore.
