I am willing to bank his philanthropy, talent, kindness, care for his wife and daughter, physique/looks, etc. against that.

That would depend. If they honestly believe the "tell it like it is" thing, that's a stupid asshole. If they are saying "tell it like it is" knowing that it's a lie, that's a dishonest asshole. Dishonest asshole is worse than stupid asshole.

I am lucky to have friends who are willing to tell me when I'm being an asshole, without being assholes about it.

In return for their kindness, I try to make up for it. Not just to them, but to everyone involved, even if it's at a level they'll not be aware of. Sometimes an apology isn't enough. Sometimes an apology is the wrong thing to do, because too many people stop there when they need to fix the damn problem.

Some day I will learn, somewhere deep down, how to simply not be an asshole, but I suspect this will require some help that I can't yet afford.

^ This. Not in regard to you in any way, but in regard to that being a very broad, if not universal, truism.

Too many people have a habit of treating an apology like a 'get out of jail (almost) free' card, and there are absolutely certain circumstances in which actions have to back up the words for the words to have any meaning at all.

Speaking of apologies, I've come to realize I've been responding to them entirely wrong my entire life. I always have responded with 'it's okay', which it wasn't, otherwise there wouldn't have been anything to apologize for to begin with, when I should have just been saying 'thank you'.

And that's great, but it's also the #1 problem with 'perfection'. Something is either perfect, or it's not.

@Coin Kinda just more proof that 'perfect' is not a thing that's going to happen, but 'is not an asshat substantially less often than one is an asshat' is the best we really have any business expecting of anyone.

Hell, back on WORA people were wishing someone had another heart attack and 'that this one will be fatal'. Wishing cancer on someone is not something I'd put past more than a few folks lurking around the fringes of the board for a hot second, as we've already seen wishing death and rape on people here.

It's not much of a stretch to think that some people like cancer well enough, provided 'the right person' gets it. Which is more than a little sad, when you think about it.
