    • RE: New Prospect MUSH

@Orange At least in my mind (I'm sure that's not universal though) consent-based games tend to be somewhat diceless, or at least keep mechanics around to see if specific actions succeed or fail or how powers work.

How are the WoD mechanics implemented there in that regard? For example you state that you "would so completely and severely lose to just about anyone who'd been there longer" but how can you lose if loss has to be consensual? Or what happens if you're in a PrP, you have all but two boxes of aggravated damage filled and an NPC rolls and scores 3 damage on you? I'm not sure if the limit of consent here is PC death (I haven't read the entire thread), what happens if you win the contested roll for Obfuscate vs Auspex so you start spying on someone but they say they don't want to be spied on?

Consent-based MU can be quite a lot of fun, I'm just not sure how the implementation works for the WoD.

Peeve: Things that happen which are totally my fault, so who do I get mad at?

Example: I get out of the shower, I'm cold as hell, and I realize there's no towel because I didn't grab a fresh one after putting the last one in the laundry basket.

Or the classic, bang my knee against a table corner. Argh.

@GentlemanJack said in Fires of Hope: A Star Wars Story:

This looks like a fun game. SAGA is a bit complex but you start at level 4 so it shouldn't be a problem. I've never really seen a game that only had Rebellion and Civilian factions and was based on a single planet; that should be interesting.

I haven't played on Star Wars games much but in the little that I did it sounded really counter-productive to have the playerbase fragmented in so many ways; having a bunch of different planets and two major factions which essentially can't interact with each other most of the time without it coming to violence seemed like a bad idea.

IMHO this is a good approach, at least on paper.

@miss-demeanor Also Will Smith. The dude is genuinely funny as hell, and he's shown he has major acting chops. Hell, he even had some pretty good lines in the script.

What the hell was it with his performance that couldn't get a chuckle out of me in this one?

    • RE: System dealbreakers

While we're on that subtopic, I dislike any system that lets players unintentionally screw themselves over while trying to make a competent character.

So I'm not referring to, say, merely not twinking/optimizing, or creating a PC who's well rounded, or specifically giving them drawbacks ("a glass jaw boxer"). But something closer to nWoD 1.0 character generation where if you just bought things in the 'wrong' order you could put yourself at a significant drawback compared to someone who knew what to purchase with freebies instead of XP.

      CGen shouldn't be a trap.

    • RE: Make a Game with Me!

I don't know what my level of involvement can be but if you want some early questions:

      • What level of technology do you have in mind for this?
      • Does magic/the supernatural exist?
      • Is the game primarily PvE or PvP?
      • Do you have a system or mechanics in mind for it?

You also mention conflict How do you plan to systematize it staying healthy, and losing being a rewarding experience?

I don't know how RL this is, but there might be an actual table-top RPG group in my near future - yes, it's 5th Ed D&D, but nothing's perfect. 🙂

    • RE: Character Woes

I'm playing a character who's New At This. It's just that in his case 'this' entails shifting into a massive wolfman, which in combination with not having a pack yet to anchor him and happy circumstances where he simply hasn't ran into any of the many, many things out there tougher and bigger than he is has led him into a sense of personal invincibility. "We're URATHA", he figures, "the apex predators!".

So since he just doesn't give enough fucks to prevent him from it all coming off as overconfidence and smug superiority, it could rub people the wrong way. Hopefully it's a problem time will solve for me.

@Botulism said in Fear and Loathing:

Yes, we're aware that it looks like it could be easily abused, but as players from the game have said, it really hasn't been. There really haven't been any problems of Guest Stars dominating RP or slapping Stars around. If it happens, we'll act.

      I like that part.

As a whole we're typically so very worried around here about OMG-abuse that we don't try things for fear they'll be taken advantage of. But often enough that's not a design flaw, it's staff not being on top of things or letting unfortunate situations develop unchecked, regardless of the system.

@kanye-qwest said in The limits of IC/OOC responsibility:

I wish I knew how to make people be considerate of each other, and not take everything as a personal slight when there are much more plausible explanations.

It's probably our biggest collective issue as a community. We're not always good about sharing our toys, or not taking things personally. It doesn't help that we're looking at each other as competitors instead of collaborators at times.

In fact that's the key here... trust. We don't have it, as a rule, for our fellow players.

On a tangentI wonder (some of you such as @Ganymede might be able to answer this) if it's the same for theatrical productions. Do actors root for their characters and try to push for them to win? Do they view directors - which I assume is the closest thing to storytellers - as means to get what they want for those characters, or obstacles to their success?

Are there any parallels between the two activities, since that would be a community with some similarities to ours, but unlike it with centuries worth of history we can tap as opposed to this fledgling little hobby of ours that didn't exist two days ago.

@Paris Either a game will support every possible sphere which has drawbacks of its own or it will run into people who really dig whatever splat wasn't included for whatever reason.

You can't please everyone, so you might as well run the best game you can with the choices you made.

    • RE: World of Darkness -- Alternative Settings

@faraday said in World of Darkness -- Alternative Settings:

I don't really believe that's true. There have been countless "successful" (eye of the beholder obviously) games where the only thing filling the time between plots is plot-aftermath or social RP. TGG, pretty much every Battlestar game, most post-apoc games, etc. It works as long as the plots are frequent enough and accessible enough to provide a break from endless BarRP.

That's a pretty big 'as long as' condition though. Especially since the plots in question by their nature don't get to involve everyone, or they're fragmented (as the case often is with sandbox games) which prevents a semblance of a narrative from providing a hook to facilitate socialization.

In other words if we meet at a bar we still need something to talk about. Some common ground, something we both want to work towards or against each other... but there needs to be more than "so, vampires suck... amirite?" because that gives you a topic the first time, but what about the second one?

Momentum is similarly a very big deal. When a game is established and there have been several plotlines already you can dig into the past and mine treasure there, but sometimes new games are dead on arrival because they get locked in this catch-22 of nothing to do and nothing having been done before, which in combination with mostly new characters players aren't that attached to yet... it can deflate interest pretty fast.
