@kanye-qwest I actually consider preemptively explaining/warning others about your character to be a suspicious marker.

My preferred method of playing is to just pose. I don't like talking to people I'm in RP with too much about my character's mindset, intentions or anything like that; I'd rather chat about anything other than the RP I'm already doing.

    • RE: Kushiel's Debut

@GangOfDolls I played KD and left for unrelated reasons (basically my character's friends/cast fell off the side of the world). I know other things happened afterwards but while I was there the game was well made and cared for.

Having said that, I'd say Arx is the cool lords and ladies MU* these days - more active, and good staff. KD is similar, I'd say with more emphasis on TS/romance and less on politics, so pick your poison.

Either way they're both good places to play.

    • RE: Bluetooth Headphones

      I'm using two headsets.

One is an Mpow Cheetah; cheap as hell (something like $30? from amazon.ca, probably way cheaper for the USAians), the battery is decent for what it is... good for sports, light, feels secure behind the ears. I like I can easily put it away in my coat pocket and forget about it until I need it, too, the damn thing is so compact.

My other set was a Christmas present but Bose Soundlink II was a pretty decent low/midrange headset. Way more comfortable, the battery is amazing and it sounds way better. But it's not as secure for sportsy stuff - anything other than a brisk walk wouldn't be too great.

Loner-slash-misanthropes don't work on MU*. They can work, I suppose, if you're OOC well connected and set them up in just the right way, but why burden yourself like that?

    • RE: Kushiel's Debut

@GangOfDolls Yeah, KD is based on the Kushiel's Legacy series by Jacqueline Carey, so while I found people were pretty accommodating with players unfamiliar with the source material (I was still reading it at the time) it can be intimidating to a newcomer. And those are some mother-loving huge-ass books. 🙂

Arx is its own thing, yes. It's inspired by grimdark fantasy books such as Joe Abercrombie's works.

I don't think you need to worry too much about knowing the material going into it in either case. Plus I'm sure someone from here is going to volunteer to give you a hand starting out in 5...4...3... 🙂

@Thenomain said in Are there any MU* RP log repositories out there?:

I don't know of a repository for every log on every game that anyone cares to upload about. I think that'd be a little crazy.

Maybe for posterity purposes? Once the original game's wiki goes down all of its logs are gone, probably forever.

We -are- interested in hearing from players who left and are considering returning to share what it is they'd like to see more of, so that if politics or conflict or even more monster fights are something they wished they'd seen before we can try to accomodate.

What I'd like to see is a decentralization of leverage in general. It's probably endemic to lords and ladies in general but there comes a point of rank saturation after which any impact to the game's political landscape must come through a finite number of positions, and if you're not (or positioned near) one you can easily find yourself locked out of anything cool going on.

If I remember correctly you guys already had a system of available 'actions' per week, so leverage that? For starter make task delegation a necessity for everyone regardless of rank, then that way you have "spy masters" who actually need little birds (and whose players are then more likely to go around recruiting their friends to play them). Make resources really matter - you can be a military leader but you need to pay your men so where's the money coming from? Etc.

Then reward activity. Make the spy/banker who's at it actively produce more, making them more valuable to their allies.

In other words turn as many characters into assets instead of just... existing.

Just to be clear, I wouldn't have made a thread like this if I wanted people to shut up. It's kiiind of a meta-discussion to talk about a forum on the forum, but I think some good points can still be made.

Personally I much prefer threads about characters, discrimination in games or kitten armies. But I understand this stuff is important to (some of) you, and so I'm trying to take input and respond as much as I can. For starters an excellent point was made earlier on about getting defensive and circling the wagons when people disagreed with administrative decisions, and I cut that shit out... for the most part. 🙂

But personal preferences are, of course, a thing. Not all games can satisfy all people.

While this is no doubt true, create a sandbox is you want one, but label it as such. I generally don't join games when I'm only going to end up being the lighting-guy.

But that's why I said FCs would need to be 'done correctly'. If they take over - well, few people want to play the sidekick role, but they don't have to. If the big names are in every scene, doing all the cool things while everyone else is on standby that's the opposite of what they should be there for.

Now, if you have Leia overwhelmed with bureucracy trying to keep everything together she's unable to go out on those tricky diplomatic meetings or investigate a streak of suspicious assassination hundreds of miles away - so she can delegate the investigation to PCs. If on the contrary she shows up in every goddamn scene you have stealing the spotlight because the person playing her wants to show her off then it's a problem since why is your character there at all?

The same obviously applies to combat, etc.

FCs aren't the problem. Their players sometimes are.

Still, I changed all the passwords to all the things to be safe, and was going to submit a ticket until Blizzard was like 'Lol no take a picture of your ID and send it to us.'

A few years ago someone did steal my Battle.net account briefly. And yes @Misadventure, I was using a Blizzard Authenticator (the physical one at the time 🙂 ), a nice password, and they never got hold of my e-mail address let alone access to it.

No, this was more fun. Somehow they used my real name (or a version of it, not the formal one that goes on official papers) and contacted Blizzard directly with a photoshopped Quebec driver's license with a random picture on it and my name. I'd never even been to Quebec let alone had a driver's license from there! But the Blizzard rep was like "dur-hur, here you go" and just changed the e-mail address to whatever that person told them to.

I retrieved my account within a couple of days by producing, y'know, actual evidence I'm who I am but it goes to show there's really no technical substitute for good ol' fashioned social engineering when it comes down to circumventing security.

    • RE: Good writin'.

Sometimes you also should consider the OOC circumstances. For example I consider it at least a matter of proper MU* etiquette to ask in a page before I actually join a scene unless it's in a really public place; that is, I won't really check first to go to Elysium but if it's something happening at bar #5 on the grid and it's just two people then I will. People might not want others there which is fine with me; if they're RPing a quiet dinner date then anything I do to engage them would be disruptive unless that's what they're looking for.

Then again it's been known to happen that you'll ask if you can join something already going, get there, and figure out there just isn't anything for you to do. Maybe those involved say they are (or actually are) OOC okay with others coming in but they are RPing having dinner and any attempts to hook yourself in that or to engage them go unanswered. That's a bit more awkward since you now have to consider a reason to extract yourself from that situation unless you know them well enough to be sure actually pushing the matter IC won't annoying anyone present.

Frankly I'd much rather be told ('just so you know, it's probably going to be boring for you if you come') than spend half an hour finding this isn't the scene I was looking for.

      Edit:

      @Rook said in Good writin'.:

      @Arkandel
I dunno, Ark. I could really go with that, since it was entirely IC, and the mob was right outside. That implies, to me, that it is a currently-running, happening-right-now plot, and it is entirely plausible that someone would burst into a room all bloody and needing help.

There was no mob outside before we got there, and (as I remember the circumstances at least, this was a while ago) no metaplot about that sort of thing happening in general.

But basically the "I walk into the room bloody, bruised and half dead, someone save me!" has been an attention-seeking trope for a long time. 🙂

Sorry to nitpick your example. 😞

      Sokay!

@arkandel So will there at any point be a more punitive action taken against anyone that sees fit to drag Hog Pit nonsense into the rest of the forum? I mean, obviously I opted into the Hog Pit so I don't mind it nearly as much as those that called for it to be made opt-in only. But it seems rather silly to have had that huge discussion about it, complete with its own shit-flinging and arguments, and gone to all the bother of making it so... if people are just going to drag it right back out into the rest of the forum.

Yeah, I agree. Ganymede's Law will take care of the written part of the rules when that's ready, and we do plan to have a 'gray zone' that sits between Constructive and the Hog Pit for reviews and the such, as well. And I do want some of the targeted group actions ("we don't like you in particular, person, so everything you say will be attacked on sight!") to stop. Dogpiling is definitely on my radar as well.

What I'm kinda pleased about is that folks from all sides of these arguments seem equally pissed off at times. It probably means something's being done right.

@Ghost said in Star Wars: Insurgency:

FCs are awesome quest givers. That's kind of the golden "badass" standard on MMORPGs. Once you're getting your quests from FCs, you know you're important. Always been a fan of FC quest givers/NPC plot devices/etc.

The way I look at it is this: There should be a distinction between whether FCs are played for the sake of their players or for the game's.

So when you pick, say, Nightwing on a comics MU* out you're out for yourself; there are probably some general guidelines you're still going to need to adhere to - it's an athletic guy, trained by Batman from an early age, etc - but otherwise he's yours. You don't owe anyone else an explanation about how he turns out. Maybe he'll end up hooking up with Barbara, maybe he'll discover he's gay, maybe he'll go on to lead a Suicide Squad. You can play him as a daredevil, or more brooding or anything in between - he's your character.

When you play an NPC handed out by staff specifically to facilitate thematic roleplay on the MU* that's not at all the same deal (in my eyes, at least); the goal is different, and so are the means. No, Han isn't going to break up with Leia because reasons. Luke isn't going to diverge too far from the path his current timeline in the movies suggests. Their role is to provide context for PCs and advance storylines, and if you start to go off too far from that then the character should be taken away.

They're different things. Yes, corrupt staff and idiotic players have messed it up before. But that's on corrupt staff and idiotic players, because it's also been done well before.
