    • RE: Hello MSBites! Grade your administrators.

      Mild necromancy here.

We don't feel the current model of shoving dumpster fires into the Hog Pit is working. I know others have mentioned it before, but it's not sufficient to simply squint at threads outside of the Hog Pit until they cross the line so much they need to get moved inside of it.

What we are considering doing instead is placing a warning into the thread itself ("Please stop attacking people here") and if it's not respected then we'll start deleting offending messages. If it keeps happening, well, we'll break out the banhammer to give those posters a time out.

I really hate deleting comments as it resembles censorship but toxic posts spreading across the forum is not better.

If you have thoughts (... hah) this is a good place to put them.

    • RE: My first cellphone

My Pixel 2 rocks. Quick updates, great battery life and charging times, awesome interface, Google Assistant is amazing while I'm in the car and need to tell it to do stuff for me.

On the other hand no memory slots and it's not the cheapest device.

@apos said in 'Inspired by' rather 'This Work: The Mu':

I think that having an original setting that draws upon conventions is rewarding, though I do think it takes a really large investment of time and you'll never really be 'done' in explaining the world.

For me the greatest issue with original settings is that player buy-in is hard. A MU* needs to have way more work put into it both preemptively (setting up a wiki, in-game help files, etc) and reactively in terms of staff answering questions and addressing thematic discrepancies while being in tune with each other for it to function. It's sometimes a lot of work to ask of a newcomer to do *before they know if they like it enough to stay.

In comparison a "New 52" DCU MUSH is way easier in many regards. You are attracting players who're fans coming in and who have a pretty decent idea of what's happening right off the bat. Your major characters are known and recognizable, their powersets more or less set, and no one is asking "hey do cellphones exist on this game?". It's just easier to recruit since the minimum required effort put upfront is lower.

      So that's a big factor.

@hedgehog Both Spotify and Google Play let you save songs locally for future playback (and, for example, to only download songs on wifi to preserve data).

    • RE: Good TV

Away for the weekend, and I'm watching daytime TV which I almost never do.

At first I was only mildly facepalming about the royal wedding's coverage but... whatever. Sure, let's hear about the cake and who did the brows.

But then they turned things up several notches when I got hit with the goddamn trailer for their goddamn straight-to-TV-movie with actors and everything playing Meghan and Harry to tell the story of their incredible storybook romance.

... Sorry, this is a 'good TV' thread but I can't even plz send help.

I find it really interesting no one has voted for 'radio'. Not a single person.

Because radio has more commercials than music.

It's not even the commercials... it's the fucking DJs talking over the songs.

Dammit I didn't want to listen to your lame jokes and insights on urban life. I want to listen to the goddamn song. Shut up and let it play!

@zombiegenesis I have Prime anyway and I tried it, but I found the selection pretty small. Are you satisfied with it?

But you can shape and grow your playlists as you go.

I just hate having to do the work. 😛

Downloading MP3s is definitely the way I'd want to do it, but my Pixel 2 has no SD card slot and 'only' 64 GB... most of which have gone to apps and data as it is. So I can't have my stuff on the go unless I want to listen to the same stuff a lot.

@auspice Do you like the UI? It confused me a lot when I was trying it out for stuff like "generate a playlist of songs similar to Five Finger Death Punch".

It was great at recommending new things but I wanted it to create lists on demand based on my moods. Google does that, and it exploits various other violations of my privacy (such as knowing I'm at the gym/on the road/at work) to make suggestions.

@lemon-fox Youtube is streaming! Sure, valid choice.

If you're in the States also being a Google Play subscriber removes the ads from Youtube.

@bobotron We're going to a drive-in soon with friends and we had to pick between Deadpool 2 and Solo. It's not even a real choice.

Damn, it's the first Star Wars movie coming out in the theatres in my lifetime that I won't go see. The trailer just looked... meh. I mean, sure, I'll eventually watch it at home, but...

A double-blind system is always good; you only know if someone OKs you for Sexyfuntimes(tm) if they have OK'd you. But this becomes a very small subset of the RP Preferences ideas that have been floating around since...Shang? FurryMUCK?

Oh I know, but what I was hoping was to avoid the icky factor of airing your preferences for all to see. That works on Shang since that's why people go over, but on a game with a different focus it sounded out of place, so I wanted something subtler and less in-your-face.

In retrospect I'm not surprised people on this thread found it icky anyway, although I don't know everyone gave it a fair chance. Maybe it was never going to work to begin with though seeing that it gained no friction with the exact kind of players I hoped would have gone "oh, that's neat".

There's always the dreaded 'so, how much are you enjoying this?' OOC question that might as well be 'I want to know if you're jerking off right now OOC'.

I don't know if you can bring it up OOC without things getting weird.

Yes, thanks for bringing that up.

In the past that has been a valid question I meant to ask, and when I didn't it was largely due to this. It sounds creepy if it's phrased even remotely wrong, but it's so close to a very legitimate question as well.

    • RE: Let's talk about TS.

So let's get back to the topic at hand! I feel we strayed a little bit.

The general consensus seems to be that coded/formal communication about TS wouldn't work, which means it's not something that can be systematized.

Can you guys bring up a way you have interacted - OOC - in the past with someone you didn't already know well enough beforehand in order to discuss limits, preferences, FTB-or-not, etc? When was the best time for it? What worked versus other stuff that didn't?

In other words, let's focus on what to do (and how, if possible) rather than what not to do, which has been probably (and sadly) covered extensively in other threads.
