It'd add either a barrier to entry for new crafters, or a cool rp hook as they try to build a reputation from the ground up

I haven't played on Arx in a long time, but dinosaurs having an advantage was always part of how its systems were designed, or at least a byproduct of them.

@arkandel Sorry, I meant do the other players have their devices with them as in the OTT software/website might help. Could physical/digital dice by choice even; even slack has a dice app to OTT.

Yeah, we can assume they all have smartphones with them. Which I think will prove to be distracting but good luck enforcing my iron will there.

Any other parameters to know about? Only you have your laptop/tablet handy?

Yeah, the environment is pretty much my/a living room. So I can always count on having my laptop (or an Android tablet) around, an internet connection and I guess a table. 🙂 I don't want to get a projector for it, it's too much work and I don't know yet if the campaigns will be combat-heavy enough to justify it.

Oh also, what are our thoughts about dice? Physical or digital?

      ... This might get ugly.

Options can be a bad thing if they distract from the gameplay or give an advantage that some might consider unfair, both things others have offered some concern over. This is normal. I wouldn’t want the rules to change my character or force me into unwelcome gameplay either.

What's 'unwelcome' is relative though. People have different tastes, and in many cases don't even know what they want until they're given it, let alone what others might want. For example I've told @Apos in the past I was shocked at how much interest there was in purely cosmetic stuff like customized item descriptions (without any stats) or messengers who do the exact same thing as the default ones. To me that feature offers nothing but to others it does.

I will however also agree emphatically with someone in this thread who pointed out that without meaningful money sinks the economy can't turn... and it's not easy to find things people want. And usually you can't go wrong with putting that gold toward buying numbers on your +sheet if what you're after is to provide such sinks.

@misadventure Okay, let's say I don't want to spend more money than what was spent on the laptop/tablet and maybe buying some software 😛

      Hey folks,

Since I'm about to start playing (and that might include DMing in the future) table-top RPGs again after a very, very long time I was wondering... what has changed in the last few years? Has technology made this part better in any cool, fun way? Have we finally replaced the good ol' fashioned DM Screen with anything fancier?

What I'm looking for is something I can have in front of me on a tablet or laptop that lets me keep notes, maybe draw simple maps (the emphasis is on simple, I don't expect tilesets, zoom-in capabilities or shit like that), maybe a hex grid I can turn around to show players where things are, and of course tables I can consult with common modifiers, charts, etc.

Are there any neat tools like this out? Ideally it'd be one tool so I don't need to alt-tab through six different programs while playing.

Edit: In my case this would be D&D 5th Edition, but feel free to mention more generic stuff, or programs made for other products.

<grumbles> Dealing with some right shoulder pain for the first time ever. I suspect it's my squat grip that's to blame since I had been closing it more. But it's been bugging me for two weeks now, and that's really annoying because I never had issues there.

      I once quit MUSHing.

      Then came back.

We thought you were a goner, but --

Whenever someone says they're quiting MUSHing I feel like Ben Affleck talking to Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting.

@auspice I was in a gym years ago where they sold ancient water extracted from iceburgs in the Antarctic that had been sitting there for millions of years.

For example I saw your message asking to reset your password like, two weeks after you sent it. I had Discord open, but I just... never check it if I'm not in a raid group.

@surreality If we're talking Shang then this thread will get taken over. 😛

For example I remember being in a room with three different versions of Hermione Granger. All of them roleplaying like it's totally normal.

    • RE: Real World Peeves, Disgruntlement, and Irks.

@ganymede We recently (4 months?) ago we got Roo, our second rescue cat to keep Gus company - our slightly older cat who's a complete sweetheart.

We also have two dogs. One of them, Daphne, gets really excited at the sight of new animals (and people, and... everything) but she's not aggressive about it, and gets over it when she gets to lick them to death for a while a couple of times.

The problem is Daphne runs over at top speed making these weird gurgling excited noises that scare the shit out of Roo, who has no idea all he fucking has to do is sit still for a minute, let her sniff him out, and she'll forget he's even there. So he runs away - every time. So Daphne gets even more excited because this is a fun game - every time.

We thought they'd get over it in a couple of weeks, and I tried to socialize them by craddling Roo, bringing him up so Daphne could lick him at her own pace while I petted him... but although the fucker sits and lets her when he has to, I guess in some twisted way he enjoys that game too, so every single time he gets into the living room and Daphne sees him he gets chased back downstairs. Every time. Several times a day. For months now.

Eh, fuck him. He has food, two beds and a play area down there (Daphne's too old to go down the stairs so he's 'safe' in the basement).
