    • RE: 'The Magicians' again -- time period?

My only advice is, if you choose a non-modern period or a geographical location other than contemporary north America then please do not even try to make it realistic. Your players won't have the same idea of... anything about it - social conventions, technological levels, everyday lifestyle, dress codes... anything.

Any choice can still succeed wildly, mind you, just as long as you Hollywood-ize the shit out of it.

I don't even know what "siding with @Coin" is supposed to mean. That sentence makes no sense to me.

      UberEats delivering food via bicycle.

      There's no opt-out.

Unless the restaurant is nearby (in which case it's as fast or faster than with a car) the food's always dramatically late, then it takes a long time and jumping several hoops to complain about it.

If that was the case MSB would be the source of all happiness, all the time.

    • RE: Good TV

I started Cobra Kai's S2 without any real degree of enthusiasm. I liked the first season but it wasn't exactly in my must-watch list so I watched the first couple of couple of episodes very casually during suppers and stuff.

Then about halfway in I just kinda went 'wow' and watched the second half in a row, in one sitting. It got really good, really fast, at least for me. The season finale kicked some serious ass.

Also: The Boys! Episode 3 was quite a twist. I did not see that coming.

I've been on this train for years. The future of MU* if there is one is in web-based interfaces. Game developers have taken some great steps (Ares comes to mind) though.

@Kanye-Qwest said in How to move beyond a concept?:

A world is not the most important part of the game imo. Start bigger. What do you want the theme of the game to be? What will the stories be exploring? How do you want your players to spend their time and focus? Then adjust your world and rules/systems (If you have them) to those goals.

To add my thoughts to that, what players will spend their time doing is the most important question for a new game.

A lot of very lengthy, detailed writeups I've seen over the years failed to answer it; the ideas in such cases looked fine as something to base a book on, but that's a completely different project than an interactive multiplayer world.

      @MarsGrad said in Dark/Low-Fantasy with a Witcher-esque Feel:

Setting aside, I'm still shopping around for RPG systems, staff, and feedback so suggestions for any of the three are more than welcome! Thanks!

I'll provide the usual pieces of feedback which apply to most settings.

      1. Pick the mechanics and world that excites and drives you the most. Until the project is well underway it will live and die on your interest level, after all. If your momentum dies, so will it, but staff and players will look twice at a creative, energetic game creator with vision and energy.

      2. Keep answering the question "what will players actually do in this game once they log on?". An idea that looks amazing on paper but doesn't somehow end up translating to players having stuff to do may be a flawed one. For example is there stuff to do when no plots exist to throw monsters at PCs? Is there room for stuff to do for non-combat PCs? And so on.

      Good luck!

    • RE: The basketball thread

      @Ganymede For sure.

But you know what I 'like' ? It probably doesn't belong on a basketball thread but fuck it.

I like what big hypocrites people are when it comes to literally innocent people being murdered by police without any consequences.

You shouldn't make a gesture by kneeling during the anthem, find another way to protest!

You shouldn't march, find another way to protest!

You shouldn't use social media to talk about it, shut up and dribble, find another way to protest!

You shouldn't boycott games, find another way to protest!

Like... at what point are these folks basically saying they're okay with the murders but not with reacting to them?

@Ganymede What is admirable about the players is that the ones who walked out first (the Bucks, playing in a super racist city) and the two LA teams are all among the absolute favorites, with sports legacies on the line.

These aren't underachieving first-round exit teams with little to lose by making a grand gesture. LeBron wants a championship badly. Giannis is chasing his first. Toronto looked like the champions they are, and VanVleet was talking about the need to make personal sacrifices for days. The Clippers just smashed Dallas and were about to close the series out.

I just really wish this had happened on a healthy season so it could be felt more on empty stadiums and a billion dollar industry coming to a screeching halt because of it.

NBA players have chosen to put their money where their mouths are. And good for them.

It's only a shame the break from Covid-19 will possibly diminish the impact of canceling the NBA playoffs due to racial injustice, since the season was already disrupted before. But it's a powerful message regardless to speak with one's actions.

@Wretched said in General Video Game Thread:

@Arkandel I was planning on playing a bit, as for raiding, I'd need like a casual vibe. Because i've gone heavy raiding and its taken over my life, twice. Also, Horde or Alliance?

Horde, for me. I like it, but also it's much easier due to the demographics to find groups since there are simply more players on that faction (which, of course, means the imbalance only worsens over time - they really need to allow cross-grouping).

I only raid under very specific conditions. My guild had one night a week for three hours (which allowed us to clear Heroic and 1-2 bosses from Mythic). Then we had an optional second night for some Mythic pushing - we ended up going to the 5th boss, but the pre-expansion burnout ended that.

I can't imagine raiding more than that ever again. Frankly even if I had the time, which I don't, I wouldn't.

    • RE: Visit Fallcoast, sponsored by the Fallcoast Chamber of Commerce

In my opinion (this might be off-topic, in which case please let me know) the main issue with WoD MU* isn't so much that characters are special. They are kind-of sort-of supposed to be.

The issue - for me - is that RP tends to be very segregated around bubbles of activity (typically PrPs, whether staff- or player-ran) and bar RP. That leads to feast or famine; either you're fending off bloodthirsty frogmen or scenes revolve around birthday parties and dating calendars. As overall activity wanes it gets tilted toward the latter.

But in the right group it's a whole lot of fun.

@Ganymede The Raptors were the first team since 1978 to have five players average 15 or more points a game in the regular season. And there are no defensive liabilities on their roster.

That's a tough, experienced team to beat. Their one issue will be to figure out how to close tight games when the ball gets hot.

Is anyone planning on playing WoW in Shadowlands?

I've finally found a guild I quite like and got back into raiding... only to stop raiding since it's the end of an expansion and interest is waning across the board.

    • RE: How do you discover books?

I just thought it was really cool if I could rate a bunch of books I've read and then get honest suggestions and recommendations created by an engine about other titles that are similar to those.

Or to point me to reading lists by other people who share enough of my preferences so I can see what they've discovered since I might like them as well.

But GoodReads just can't do that. In a way it's a victim of its own popularity since its grading system is being abused to point to books I don't care about... or worse, which don't exist. Like, wtf do you mean Doors of Stone has 606 reviews right now and a 3.7 score. How ?

    • How do you discover books?

I used to enjoy using Goodreads but it's turned into crap - too many books not even **published ** (or written!) yet are given high marks, because reasons.

I found https://beta.thestorygraph.com/ which looks neat.

Has anyone found a good alternative site to discover books you might like?
