    • RE: Real World Peeves, Disgruntlement, and Irks.

@Aria It's also so rewarding to be in an environment where people support each other.

I'm still learning to ... allow myself to ask for considerations ('Hey, I need this deadline pushed back') because of how many shit companies I've been in.

But man, I was thinking about this today! A lot of people here are preparing for work trips and I overheard two women in the bathroom: one admitting she was really stressed out and nervous about her trip and the other reassuring her and saying 'All right, what we need to do is find out what we can take off your plate, okay? Will that help?'

      Like, it was goddamn heartwarming.

There is a reason I am already mourning the end of this contract. There are too many shit jobs out there where people abuse those beneath them and the company culture is not helpful/conducive to mental health in the least.

    • RE: I need a god damn Expanse MU.

      I have notes.

      Like, location, setting (timeline), plot...

I just never found people who were willing to follow my rule of 'If you Staff, you run plot' because Ares is perfect for it and I didn't need Staffers who just wanted to be Staff.

So if someone wants to take that over, I can try to dig up what I had.

    • RE: The ADD/ADHD Thread (cont'd from Peeves)

I've been having one of those nights where every little thing is annoying. Notifications? Infuriating.
The sound of the air conditioner faintly rattling outside the window?
      Maddening.

I haven't had one of these in a while (thankfully).

I'm not sure which is stronger here.

The refusal to accept responsibility for one's actions or the passive-aggressiveness.

#1 reason I miss working from home: I get really terrible cramps and so tired I can barely function during my period.

I swear I've nearly dozed off at least half a dozen times today.

Me: I hate wearing ties at work. At least women get to wear a much wider array of—
      Every Woman Ever: <glares>
Me: Yup, ties! I love ties! Tiestiestiesties!

I don't give two shits about fashion. Partly because either from ADHD or being on the spectrum, I have major issues with comfort and fabric (I have been known to get dressed and then run back to my room to change clothes because the fabric is literally rubbing me the wrong way). So my go-to outfit is jeans or yoga pants and a tank top ('fabric on fabric discomfort' is something I've tried to get people to understand for a long time so my sleeves rubbing against my shirt under my arms really really bothers me) . In cooler months, I'll add a hoodie.

But when I work in an office, I'm surrounded by all these ladies who look put together and pretty and I start to feel more and more out of place...... until I'm trying to assemble nice, business-casual-at-least outfits so I don't stand out as some hideous troll.

I wish I could get away with just 'slacks-shirt-tie' like men do. I work with someone who wears the same thing (black slacks, white button-down) every single day. No one ever bats an eye.

And it's possible no one would if I did similar as a woman, but culture and pressure and anxiety have me seeing some woman in a cute little black dress, heels, and full make-up while clearly late in her second trimester of pregnancy and my brain starts going 'oh god if she's still up to wearing HEELS and TINY CUTE DRESSES while pregnant than what do people think of me and my jeans/t-shirt combo?!'

So today I'm wearing a dress over a pair of leggings and wedges. I will strip it off the instant I get in the door at home to sink into pajamas.

    • RE: The Apology Thread

Can we mention apologies we want?

I want an apology from the guy who, many years ago, tried to lecture me on proper use of it's/its and did so incorrectly. He was a snotty bastard about his improper use of grammar.

(Yes, I am being utterly facetious here. :P)

@Macha said in Health and Wealth and GrownUp Stuff:

@TNP It's just that I have to work and function, and if I'm already feeling it like this, it ramps up the anxiety about how I will make it through the work week.

I know it gets said often, but I know I sometimes need a reminder when my mental state is really bad:

take it one day at a time.

Us anxiety-ridden types are really bad about worrying about the future. And when depression (situational, a spike in chemical depression: whatever) kicks in, it can be all the worse.

On those days, lying in bed in the morning as I consider just calling out of work so I can sleep all day... I just make myself focus on what's right in front of me. Get up. Get dressed. Get out the door. Each one becomes a chunked item that I focus on. Broken down it gets easier and it also gives me a purpose.

So yes, I know 'take it one day at a time' just sort of falls into that whole big realm of 'shit everyone says,' but it's also the one that I need be reminded of the most because it's a reminder to give myself a purpose I can fulfill right here, right now. I'm not stressing over next week. I'm not getting more upset because I can't fix my current state. I'm telling myself: all I need to do in the next two hours is eat.

Then, eventually, between the small victories and focus (worrying about the right now that's achievable vs the nebulous future)...... it clears.

    • RE: The Eighth Sea - Here There Be Monsters

I view it as broad strokes. It's a Hollywood-ized version of pirates and we know Hollywood takes liberties for the sake of story.

The brothel (the Snakebite) for example has male and female 'companions.' There are women on ships, as you've noted.

But there may still be those (NPC or PC, if someone's feeling a touch antagonistic or it's an inter-ship conflict and they wanna be ornery) that look askance at a woman. Or mock her for being weaker (until she breaks his nose).

As for gay PCs... I can't play a completely straight woman to save my life, so my personal view on it is: go for it. BG strife in relation to being gay probably exists. There may be antagonistic NPCs who are problematic. But I'm certainly not (nor will other Staff I imagine) going to stop someone from playing an LGBT char and I'll smack down anyone who gives OOC grief over it.
