    • RE: A New Star Wars game? (Legends of The Old Republic (Name pending))

I've had my own game idea that required timeskipping... but kind of worse in that it required a majority of the PCs being 'reset' on the timeline. You wouldn't lose XP or anything, but everyone would essentially suffer memory loss.

I've never rolled it out because I know people would hate the relationship 'loss,' but man I think it'd be fun metaplot/story-wise.

I do feel maybe being 100% up front would help. And maybe only doing it once, at the beginning, might soften the blow a bit. Use it as a way to kick off the game and ease in. Then it's only your initial players doing it. It's a hook into the game. It's a bonus! not a detractor.

      @lithium
You run into unfamiliarity issues. And often, people do want to be part of some of the amazing scenarios brought in with the timeline.

He's also stated that FCs won't be playable by the players. So you're putting OCs into this huge war and letting them take center stage.

      I think that's a cool idea, too.

I hope some of the folks encouraging limits/alterations/fixes of rules are familiar with Rhost (I believe that was indicated earlier as the base code) to help Mr. Johnson make these alterations and changes they may want. He's indicated already its a side project to comply with the interest in just such a Mu from the other thread. I don't know Rhost or have the time to help (or would offer), but I see a lot of suggestions of what to do and only hope folks are recognizing he's indicated a need of code help (which could get the project running sooner).

I've also echoed the call for code help.
I'm actually having to learn Rhost from the server-side as I've never managed Rhost from that end before (most others, yes, but never Rhost!). I could do very, very basic code, but I also don't plan to stick around to staff. I'm just facilitating the setup here. MJ said he would make this happen if he got the DB. I was able to talk to the right people to get it and see it happen. 😉

But yes, if you or someone you know can code in Rhost, please: speak up or email the guy. The upside is this isn't a code-from-start project, but it is a mess so it'd be some work for sure.

For non-code help... MJ will prob. need descers, since the whole grid will need to be overhauled.

      He'll need storytellers.

I'm just a server person. I just wanna play this game.

      Some people really love Mandos.

A lot of games don't have them at all (due to time period). Old Republic is one of those time periods where you can actually have 'em, so it'd be a shame not to.

They've got a pretty baller culture when you look into it.

I mean, just like you'd get some people going 'meh who cares about Jedi I WANNA BE SITH' you'll get some being the same about mando, but I've got a buddy who, when hearing about the game, went 'oh man I really hope there's gonna be Mandalorians I've had a concept I've wanted to play for years'

      It's the GoD/DoD codebase.

He'll need a coder. I'm just facilitating the setup. I don't have time to staff and I am not a coder, in the least. I just had the right people talk to me and was able to make things happen (and I can do server-side stuff no prob).

So if anyone knows Rhost and is willing to put in the work, please get in touch with @Mr-Johnson. People out there wanna see an SW game, as evidenced by this thread. 🙂

@auspice I have the coding expertise of a toddler. What I can do is read a cheatsheet and do loads of mindnumming busywork without losing my mind. I'm great at transfering stuff descing rooms building grids and the like. :"p

Ares is meant to be an out-of-the-box and intended to be like that, more-or-less. Just input data for the stuff you need, etc... You could probably adapt the extant FS3 system for SW, but I'm sure people who want crunch and stuff like SAGA or whatnot would fuss.

It's just if you want one of the existing DBs... yeah you're gonna have to hunt people down and get a coder. 😄

Or I could just bug the hell out of faraday and then use his chargen system then leave force powers as just skills that anyone with the force user trait can take.

      AresMUSH is available: https://aresmush.com/
I haven't tooled around in the backend much, but I know a lot about it. I don't have the free time to Staff anywhere right now, tho. But I'd suggest hopping on the forum http://forum.aresmush.com/ if you're looking at using it for a game since faraday is active there.

I also know @Fantom has a SW codebase around, but I forget which one. But it needed a lot of work, IIRC, codewise. That'd probably be the big issue, regardless (for non-Ares). 😕

No lightsabers for me. I worked the political angle back in the day.

And that's the thing! My Miraluka concept isn't a saber user. But still definitely a FU.

And my pilot char obvs isn't a FU, but more a Solo or Lando type. So much SW universe shenanigans to be had an the Old Republic is the beeeeest era for it all.

      @roz said in Star Wars?:

@auspice Yeah, by making Force users a less OOC EXCLUSIVE club, you'll probably actually have a better diversity layout in terms of character types, because there'll be less of a sense of exclusivity surrounding a concept, which makes people want the concept.

I mean, I know exclusive makes people clamor but I also feel like enough of us are adults that we can all share now. Plus Old Republic had the academies and shit.

      I totally wanna be a Jedi Sage. C'mon. 😛

I would play the hell out of an Old Republic era game.

People wanna play Force Users. Period. Full stop.

The issue with most SW games that have ever been is the whole 'hurr hurr only Staff / Staff BFFs / people who pass the ridiculously high bar get to be Force Users'

no seriously just let people play Force Users.
just like Pern games had to learn that PEOPLE WANT TO RIDE DARGONS LET THEM RIDE DARGONS*

I mean sure some of us will play other things too (I had an amazing pilot of a smuggling ship on an SW game back in the day and we got embroiled in the thick of a plot between light and dark side and it was kind of great), but still.

Let us be all fwooosh-fwoosh with our sabers and throw things with our brains.

and let me play my Miraluka gray 😞 😞 😞 I barely scratched the surface with a story with her HI @KDraygo I SEE YOU LURKING TODAY

I think this is why I love the Old Republic era. While there's "big heroes", there's a lot of room for original characters.

I love the Old Republic era for so many reasons.

This is cool but the only concerning thing to me is Staffer to Staffer support. Its a great thing... Don't forget to support the players though. From what I've seen so far I've not been impressed with much of the support from staff on that game. This post will hopefully prove me way wrong from the cries of the masses telling me I've got it wrong.

I will take all-comers on Hunter pitches.
Goldfish didn't get special treatment just for being Staff, I promise.

I gave the go ahead on someone apping a mute Net0 Hunter last night, for example. My only concern expressed was it may limit their RP, but if they feel confident in playing it, they can go on ahead.

Seriously, if you've got an interesting idea (I know VASCU draws a lot since they allow M+), pitch it. I'm game. 🙂

You're not alone in that, @Wretched. My doc writes me a good 30u extra/day so that at the end of the month I have extra lingering for coverage. Just in case the fucking CVS IS OUT OF INSULIN HOW THE FUCK DOES THAT HAPPEN I PLACED AN ORDER AND GOT CONFIRMATION IT WAS READY WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU ARE OUT.

      ES

My father has had this happen. When they visited me for Christmas, they had to drive to 3 different pharmacies for his insulin. THREE.

Diabetes is... not... rare. Why is it not stocked more carefully? I mean when I was 15 I was on a fairly obscure anti-depressant and found out I was one of the only people in town taking it (if not the only), so I kind of understood why my pharmacy had to order it special so it could take a few extra days to fill.

      But insulin?!

And they liked it! Staff helped Goldie to refine the concept, make it fit into theme, and offered ideas to further it. They nurtured Goldie and out of it came Nick: Disabled former marine turned Alex Jones for the paranormal. (ADAMSKI operative. He spreads lies on Youtube.) He's involved in plot and Goldie is totally engaged with him as a character.

Look, I will fully admit I can be one of those Staffers who will sometimes see an app and gripe and go 'ugh are you fucking kidding me' because it is some really stupid annoying ass trope or because I am really worried a person is painting themselves into a 'gonna have a hard af time finding RP' corner.

      but

I am also one of those staffers who really loves to see interesting concepts out there and wants people to have fun. Nick is a great idea and I fully believe TFV likes to use their assets. ADAMSKI is not commonly used on MUs because they aren't the kicking-in-doors and shotguns-in-faces wing of TFV, but... everybody needs their guy in the chair. And Nick? Nick makes the perfect guy in the chair.

And this is totally what you have a retainer for, when it comes to everything else. TFV has needs for everything. They're not just boots with guns (that's Union). They're an entirely backed and funded force across the world. That's why they're a conspiracy, not a compact.

I love Nick. Nick is great. And your bbposts with Nick are so awesome to see. They're one of the most fun ways to get plot-y rumor stuff out there I've seen. 😄

There's also that disconnect between online (Slack/Skype/email) and RL communication.

I'd rather a request in an IM just be a quick 'Could you give me access to X when you get a chance?' vs a lengthy message (or worse: series of messages!). But in person, we do factor in the please and thank you.

Over time, I can see how the former might overtake the latter for some people. It shouldn't, but I can see how it might.

Green Ronin has been active in not making it easy to get ahold of their rulesets; as a level of curiosity, how would you educate people in how to play the game?

Having spoken to one of their reps (specifically about the Expanse)...

If you get the permission of the IP holder (in this case, GRRM / the show creators), they'll gladly let you use the game rules provided you don't claim to own any of it, etc etc... I think the issue more comes back to them being afraid of the IP owner circling back on them, since they only have permission to create the game rules.

But from what I was told: if you have permission to run the game from the IP owner, Green Ronin is OK with you using their rulesets and more PDFs will be released of the games.
