    • RE: Preference for IC Time On A Modern(ish) Game

Are people really celebrating holidays EVERY SINGLE YEAR in-game though? Birthdays? Like, I guess if it's only happening once a RL year, cool, but on games that are 1:2 time or whatever - why? Why would you do that to yourself or be worried about missing an IC holiday or... why?

At least on Ares, it makes it relatively easy to backdate scenes so the time ratio really doesn't matter. Like, if you want to RP Christmas on Christmas, just.. do it.

Time is always going to be moving too fast for somebody out there, even if it's at a 1:1 or 2:1 or 3:1 or whatever. I definitely wouldn't play a game that's any slower than a 1:1 no matter what the reason, but I'm a HUGE proponent of excelerated time (within reason).

Characters always move WAY faster than normal life and I don't really want to sit around waiting a real life year for something to make sense on a normal time scale.

ETA: And the other side of this is that for most players, they will not stick around for a RL year in order to accomplish stuff.

    • RE: Preference for IC Time On A Modern(ish) Game

I personally would not want a game run any slower than 1:1 unless the game is ABOUT the summer of 1984 (for example). I personally prefer having the timelines flipped, so IC time corresponds to the opposite RL time (i.e. RL december would be IC June). I've always been on games that have run at 1:2 or 1:3 time and no one ever seems to have a problem RPing that it's snowing ICly when it's June IRL - it's a game, who cares?

Honestly? My RL holidays are so busy and I don't want to feel forced to celebrate IC holidays at the same time.

But if you slow it down past 1:1 time, you run into the opposite problem. Now the game drags. If your personal preference is to celebrate holidays in-game when we're celebrating them IRL and then you drag the game down to a 1:.5 or whatever, you're causing the SAME PROBLEM as a 1:3 game except now the days never fucking end and it's frustrating as a player who wants to see time progress.

@Lotherio said in If you work hard, son, maybe someday you'll RP:

If I do modern drama I want to do the monthly shake up. Instead of a new RP partner for RP to earn XP, it would be you get a random name and have to make up some drama. Like in a relationship, you get other person Zita and you kiss them or one night stand or do something inappropriate with them and let your current person find out or something ... Or dump your current for this flame that burns out and spend the rest of themonth convincing your old p it was a one time mistake ... The stuff off an actual modern drama/soaps.

eh, I think people will make their own drama. It's really hard to give people prompts because then you're deciding their story for them rather than letting them go out and make it.

But the enchanted fantasy game sounds like fun!

@Lotherio I definitely miss having a Calaveras-esque game in the universe of games that are out there to play. Are you making a new game? I think there was some talk about you reviving your Arthurian/medieval game, but I don't know what happened to that.

@egg It is a gorgeous area. I grew up around 30 minutes from there and am back where I started out now. I was on Gay St. (shut up, MSB) between Matlack and Walnut in the cutest courtyard ever

Uhhhh did you grow up in Phoenixville? <.<

I'd play a 90s game if someone made it. As long as there were only human PCs tho.

@Testament Yeah, different strokes for different folks but I do think there's something about modern-day that has a broad appeal. Or at the very least, alternative-fiction time periods where there's modern conveniences and no -isms.

I for a long time tried to develop a western MUSH based in 1880s. It ust got too difficult to overcome some of the inherent problems of the time to make a game where a lot of people could play whatever they wanted. There is probably a middle ground, but I think you either take a lose on the setting or a lose on the kind of characters that can work in the setting.

@Alamias Yes, Gray Harbor is my game which I made specifically because of the lack of those kinds of games 🙂 My point still stands, and the popularity that both Spirit Lake and my game have seen are a result of a lack of games in those categories.

@Groth I'm going to disagree to a point. Like, I think people want that. But I also think people really want the whole "low-to-medium powered humans vs supernatural" where there aren't a bunch of werewolf PCs running around. There's been a few of those games with PC everythings that've cropped up and never really got popular, I just don't think there's as much of a demand to play werewolves as it there is to play humans with a little bit of something extra.

I don't mind slow scenes, but the 1 pose a day scenes just are impossible for me. It's really hard to get into the groove of writing with somebody if it's that slow, but that's just personal preference.

I still think the real issue is the incredible lack of broad-appeal games. If a couple of people just made a few Ares games that were modern day and weren't WoD, I think it'd be really successful.

Watched the season finale of Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist and I could swear someone threw a cup of salty water on my face.

I liked the show enough. Loved the concept. The execution was underwhelming for me though, particularly in the musical numbers. But that's the main hook of the show, so unfortunately it wasn't as great as I was hoping it would be.

I couldn't really get through the first episode. Does it get any better? Like the episode just seemed to go on forever and the fact that they weren't singing original numbers was meh to me.

Where is the money coming to sustain these houses? Who gets to decide which 35 homeless people get the tiny house? What happens to all the others?

@Ganymede Yeah I mean that's a strong possibility. Still doesn't make it any less sucky for everyone involved and I don't want to make judgments when I'm not in the situation. I just didn't see the humor in it originally (and honestly I didn't realize I was in the "Gallows Humor" thread when I responded in the first place).

That guy that you posted is definitely an asshole. If my renter couldn't make rent, I'd figure it out right now - it would probably tap into my emergency funds, but that's why I have those, right? 😞

You ask what the alternative is to letting millions of people die of exposure every year, and my mouth drops open a little bit because I can't for my life imagine why you think that is an unavoidable outcome rather than one cultivated by greedy fuckwits who think that owning land is more important than human life.

That is not what I asked. I asked what is the alternative to renting (and/or buying) a home.

What you envision is basically a utopia.

I have a home that I rent to a military veteran. I suppose I am a greedy fuckwit. I make am at a net loss every year on the home because I rent at a below-market price and do the repairs requested of me and provide free services. I do this because he's a good person and has a family and deserves a place to live that isn't going to cost him an arm and a leg. His rent pays the mortgage and I'm building equity in a house that I hope will someday pay for my children's education.

I cannot give my renter this house rent free because it isn't possible. I still owe money on the house. So while it would be nice and wonderful and indeed idealistic if everyone in America could be freely given a home, it is not realistic.

Saying "fuck landlords" as a blanket statement is misguided, it discounts people who are trying their best and who are trying to do a decent job. Finding humor in people who's livelihoods are being destroyed by this because they are landlords sucks and I honestly don't know what was funny about the original post.

There's nothing funny about it. That guy rents an apartment building and he probably has loans that are owed to the bank. When he defaults on those loans, the Bank will take the property and all of those people who unified to not pay rent will be out of a home. These are actual serious prooblems that can't be fixed by saying "fuck landlords, everyone deserves a house for free".
