    • RE: Do you buy your RPG books?

      @scissors
      There's a secondary market for OWoD books, yes, but it's difficult unless you have direct buyers. I'd suggest eBay or WoD facebook groups. Hell, if you have some Revised VtM Clanbooks, there are a few I need...

      Re: The Thread
      For myself, I do buy the books I'm going to use, or if it's a publisher/genre that I'm going to buy more stuff from. I bought the MET Apocalypse book not expecting to actually have an Apocalypse LARP to play in, and I'm going to back MET Changeling as soon as it drops. Others, I might find a copy to look at and, if it's useful enough, I'll get it. I bought almost the complete run of Requiem 1e (skipped Carthians and Sanctified as I would never play those myself) and Lost when I was actively LARPing those, for example.

    • RE: Alternative Formats to MU

      @tragedyjones

      I feel like you really need a 'one stop shop', of which there aren't too many. People are bitching in the other thread about having a MU* client and a wiki open being hyper distracting. How are they going to handle a Discord client open for RP, a wiki, a google spreadsheet link to their sheet and a sub-reddit for OOC discussion?

      I think some of the bigger digichats that I used to play on did things okay, but they were still not ideal (everything was in the web browser, but you had a page for rolls; a page for all the 'rooms' and a wiki-equivalent). I think if you wanted to integrate something into a mediawiki, you'd have to really work with the WebChat extension, which integrates an IRC. But then you have the standard IRC issues. This would work, I guess, for games that use standard dice rolls but you would lose most all automation that most WoD games function on, for example.

      Part of the problem we run into is ease of editing information on the fly, and centralizing that information and the ease of access and organization. MUs have a hardcoded news command, there's tons of softcoded news file options... but a lot of times, those are harder to update, whether it be minimal shell access to update news (which are often very disjointed, since you can't subcategory the default news at least in Penn, or easily search it with great accuracy). I think that's why so many games are MU + wiki. Wiki gives you a one-stop shop for a centralized and easily accessible and (often) easily organized information.

      Additionally, for some things some games might want to do (like my game and my automated systems), there's not many other options. And I'm already familiar with coding in Penn, for example. Learning Evennia or something else requires starting over from square zero.

      I just got a new tablet. Windows 10 Home, 6GB RAM, 128GB HD, 1.10 up to 2.0ghz processor, 12.3-inch 2736 x 1824 resolution 2K screen. It runs beautifully, and hasn't had any issues running most of my common stuff (which, admittedly, are older games like Bloodlines, RPGs and emulators).

      Any suggestions for tablet-friendly games? I have a controller that I can pair with it without much issue. Mostly interested in fighters, 3rd person games, RPGs, tactical games and... anything but a shooter.

    • RE: How much Code is too much Code?

      I like code that facilitates less onus on staff to interpret the rules, and focuses more on giving them tools to use to enhance and facilitate stories. It's why I have always loved games with coded combat systems, which speed things up since you don't have to dig through twenty books for the combat stuff you're doing (of course, these days it's also subject to the awful 'wait an hour between poses' bullshit...). Really, I want code to support the game, be tools to help players and staff both, rather than be mini-gamey to just be mini-gamey.

      Easiest way is to change the Guest logins from 'guest' to something else that's hard to guess, which will cease those logins without messing with the Guest permissions.

      Otherwise, good luck? There are a million ways around a siteban if they can just create characters (though then you'd disable character creation).

    • RE: Characters You Enjoyed Playing

      Hrm. This is difficult...

      I suppose I'll go in list of games that I have the fondest memories of.

      Aftershock, Predacon, Demolitions Specialist with an ankylosaurus alternate mode on Beast Wars: Transformers MUSH. He was my second PC on that game, after playing a Maximal, and was my longest-lived on that game. He started out pretty standard in the villain angle, but as things went on, my capability for the genre and setting got more viable. He spend a lot of time working with a variety of Predacons and involved in a great number of plots. My most memorable plot was directly involving his concepts for weaponry; he used sonic weaponry like a sonic cannon and sound wave explosives. So we RPed out the development of a subtle sonic weapon that, when turned on, deactivated energon dampeners by messing with their frequency. It turned into a really fun plot where we put two of those in the Maximal base, which made them essentially stuck in beast mode for a while. The plot ended in a pretty epic one-on-one fight between a Maximal player and me (the player was a pretty bad twink I realized after, but the fight was fun). He eventually was killed by sabotage and getting blown into a lava pit.

      Rock on Megaman MUSH. I played him on and off for years, and I really loved the idealistic young man that was his default mode. He was in even measures childlike and youthful, commanding and with a great leadership bent. He was also the first character I ever actually cried during RP through. Two of my favorite plotlines that Rock was involved in was the first Stardroid TP, where at the end, Rock's human girlfriend was killed freeing the Stardroid Terra from his prison. There was a LOT of emotional and great RP with the player of that PC. Second was the Repliforce Coup TP, where we had our first actual PC in-game death on the consent game. I didn't know it was happening OOCly, the players and staff worked it out and there was a hugely emotional impact of Rock killing a few actual PCs that he'd spent time with, worked with and generally had great emotional ties with.

      On Beast Wars: Transmetals, I played too many characters with too many great things to remember. But overall, I think running plots for everyone was my favorite. Out of all my PCs, Imp, my Starscream-alike, short statured Predacon who transformed into a dragonet was fun. I totally Starscreamed that shit up, working behind the scenes and in a vampire-familiar MO in order to usurp Megatron. I got blown up for my trouble, and my spark fed to Rampage.

      On TF2k5, I think I had the most fun with Geo, my cassette-bot Decepticon OC. She started out as a gag PC, with the function of Geologist, but eventually grew into her own. And when I bothered to actually do stuff, I got involved in some fun RP. I think one of the best memories was one of the Galactic Olympics events, and a Science Fair event where we got to freeform build stuff. That and the 'Decepticons find Martian civilization remnants underneath an EDC base on Mars' plot, where I got to be a huge central point for the plot in unearthing the facilities and getting them in working order.

      On Megaman X, I think playing iX/Return X was the highlight of my PCs. This is very much the 'troll character' I talked about in the other thread, where I got to be a smarmy immortal asshole. But he wasn't without his faults, and some of my favorite scenes were just... doing regular Maverick raid stuff, and pissing off (ICly) other characters so that slagging him over and over and over, in new and creative ways, was never a dull moment. I did enjoy playing him during the Assault on Orthanc, when the three other factions attacked and wrecked the Maverick home city. He was running around in defense of the city and had a fucking flying Ride Armor (giant robot) crashed into him, and all of its munitions detonated ALL AT ONCE. Being immortal, he survived... but damn if the things that other PCs went through to disable him for long periods of time wasn't epic.

      On X-Men Evolutions MUSH, I played Gavin/Portal, a sixteen year old mutant with teleporting powers based around opening portals from Point A to Point B. He was a weird experiment, as he was the first gay character I played on a game (I'd primarily played very FC-heavy games, or games where I played OCs their sexuality really didn't matter). I built him to get some play with the concepts of the X-Men genre and Xavier's 'dream'. Gavin was really fun and I got a LOT of awesome RP out of his character. Particularly, I ran a Genosha plotline featuring the 'Genosha as mutant slave country' for the game. It wasn't the smoothest TP that I ever ran, unfortunately. BUT, afterwards, I became very close to the then-Wanda player and a number of other Brotherhood players and got to play out a 'faction switch' in game, with all of the attendant drama of losing faith in Xavier's dream and betraying the Xavier Institute. Was hella fun. And the long-term Pietro player was super cool about Gavin's 'crush' on him, which brought no end of hilarity from Wanda and Avalanche and the version of Boom-Boom that was Brotherhood at the time.

      Re: The Roster
      The plan is to write them up, give them some more detailed info on their wikis (without revealing secrets and such), and allow people to essentially apply for them. Part of what those characters are written to do is be beholden to the MUSH and to drive RP and work closely with staff to do so.

      Re: The Powers
      To a point. Powers that are diametric to each other (extra damage vs. extra resistance) are balanced, and I'm going for a variety of options and setups. Some powers might be better than others, but that's also what some playtesting is for; I'm hoping with the variety that there's no 'one true build' thing (I'm sure there will be once people get going, but I'm also hoping that the variety gets people going in unexpected directions other than ALL THE BONUS DAMAGE, for example). It's impossible to make things 100% balanaced, but tweaking and such here and there to make sure that things work is a goal.

      Re: Types of Abilities
      I'm hoping to have it split into about 3rds for each, though combat-specific powers (even if they're based on social or mental abilities, like the Compulsion power that makes a target only able attack you/the user instead of others) are admittedly a bit more out there than ones that are only applicable to social situations.

      Most of the physical powers are specialized around combat, to be frank. And so far, all other powers have at least some combat capability (from a Compulsion power called Self-Harm that does damage based on their currently-in-use weaponry, or a Compulsion power Come At Me that draws attacks from a target; or the Mentalism power Telekinetic Strike, which does what it says on the tin), so people who want to be the bookwormy mental focus guy isn't just fucked. A lot of powers (like social and mental buffs and debuffs) also have use both in and out of combat. Like, if you use the Magnetism power Cult of Personality to give yourself Advantage on social stuff, it works on anything that uses your Social attribute, not just your combat abilities (or, in the beta of my social 'bidding' system, grants you bonus traits to bid, thus making you more likely to be able to win).

      Re: Social/Mental Powers on PCs
      This is one of the things that's getting worked on, mostly because... while combat powers are cut and dry 'if, then...' statements and code does the heavy lifting of everything, non-combat Social and Mental powers require collaboration and cooperation between players. And we all know how THAT can go. But, I'm working on guidelines for this when it comes to non-combat powers like parts of Magnetism (force of personality) or Compulsion (mental control). But in general, powers will work on PCs, though there will be some caveats based on how they function against supernatural beings, of which PCs are included. The Compulsion power Suggestion, for example, has caveats that it can't overwrite the 'core mentality' of a character. So you couldn't use it to, say, make them sexually attracted to you if they weren't already inclined that way, for example.

      @arkandel

      Definitely. I have my vision; that, at least, has not changed. some of the execution has changed, but overall the thing I want to do is still the thing I want to do. I'm just working around other, technical issues at this point.

      UPDATE TIME!

      • I have scrunched down the timeline entries and am finishing getting them entered tonight; instead of being about 20 pages, it's now about... 5? 6? for the full vampiric history.
      • I have decided to make a very short 'roster' system, using the local Princeps, Legatus and Aedile. These roster PCs will have some rules and guidelines to them, and those NPCs may/will be phased out of those positions as the MUSH gets up and going with enough regular PCs, and if PCs want those positions. The Consul and the Praetor have too much other craziness going on to start out as roster PCs, but they will also eventually open up to PCs in those positions.
      • I have added some basic Application Guidelines, and more will be added as I get closer to being done. Basically these are 'here are some common app pitfalls, here's what we'd like to see if you choose to go these routes'.
      • I squashed the +hangouts bug and added a personal hangouts bit to the code. So now if you want to go to a place regularly, you can just stick it in your own hangouts.
      • I have changed the way that powers are going to work (which I will wax about in another post soon). The baseline is, all vampires can have access to more or less all powers. Rather than building them in levels or trees, when you buy a power you 'buy' it at Rank 1. When you advance it, you rank it up, and this grants it more effectiveness (more thumping for damage-dealing; more likely to succeed for debuffs; more bonus/penalty for buffs/debuffs; more resistance for damage-reduction; overall more effectiveness for non-combat powers and RP-powers, like 'how many people I can affect with mind control' type thing).
      • Have on the project list 'Guidelines for custom powers' ala Devotions or Combo Powers from NWoD/OWoD. Like, superspeed + super resistance = Final Fantasy-style Cover?
      • Have an v0.5 'alpha' for the thoughts on social system. Working on writing this up a bit more before I post more about it.

      AMA, guys. Help keep me on track.
