One of my Midnight Pancakes did not cook all the way through. 😞 There is nothing sadder than the taste of pancake batter at midnight.

Midnight Pancakes sound like something one eats while using Kavinsky as mood music, in a dark room overlooking the neon lights of the city.

No. Midnight Pancakes are what you eat when you wake up at midnight and think: I'm hungry.

So my college has apparently setup a "public drive" that you can access from any computer on campus, to turn in computer or get special material from your instructor. Neat? Convenient? They insist on calling it DropBox, which is all over the syllabus for any teacher using it. "Assignment list is also in dropbox".

      No.

DropBox is an online service that you can access from any computer with the internet. Not one I have to go to the library with a thumbdrive to either give or take crap from.

Man, best money ever spent for what it gives you. They keep updating it years later and it's awesome. Fantastic multiplayer, too.

We should have an MSB clan!

Can you clan if you're a scrub and haven't gotten Reaper of Souls because fuck paying the same price for an expansion as the game?

It seemed to work fine on Star Trek games which were ship-based. Granted, spaceships are a gigantic number larger than a galleon. I imagine there aren't as many private quarters on a galleon as they are on a space ship. >_>

I know you said not "status" but it's basically the same thing -- LAmush: A House Divided had a +status/rep system where you could vote/down vote other vampires. It linked directly to a +rumor system so you could investigate who was saying what.

It was either ignored or horribly abused.

I would kill you all for a 7th Sea MU*. Well save for those running and coding it of course 😛

If I could ever figure out how to make one work, I'd do it. Fuck world of darkness. Fuck Mage 2E. But I always circle back to: Isn't 7th Sea supposed to be about travel?

I mean. I suppose we could set it on some gigantic galleon thing ala star trek games being set on a ship-- but how would people be from different nations then? AUGH!!! pulls out her hair

Actually, one of the quirks of 7th Sea is that the worldbuilding makes it /vastly more likely/ to have adventures on land, or - at worst - on coastal ships rather than the "high seas".

I didn't say "high seas" I said travel! The games I've played in all of the adventuring was done on land, but they've always been 'travel to this place have adventures' and then 'travel to the next place have adventures' etc.

Suppose what one could do is set up a large privateer ship that docks in different places for different story arcs (e.g. The ship docs somewhere close enough to Freiberg that the crew travels to said area for a plotline once its done they return to the ship to move onto the next place). Apps at the beginning of the game would probably all be crew members or passengers. Then after landing somewhere people could app in as natives who hire on as a crew or buy passage on the ship to the next place.

    • RE: Capped XP vs Staggered XP?

I'm pretty sure I put this in the "more or less constructive" thread. I don't really feel putting down different RPG systems is particularly constructive to this conversation. If you must continue @Derp please go start your own thread.

@Arkandel, so answer your very old question-- I don't know specifically what I want or what I am hoping to achieve. I have decided from reading this conversation that I wouldn't run a game with a stated XP cap, instead there would be a "soft XP cap" that was "enforced" via staggered autoxp. I'd decide a max amount for the game, decide how many weeks I want it take to get there, and then figure out how to stagger it from there.

e.g. I want folks to "cap" out at 200xp. I want it to take a year. The first X weeks they get 4xp. The second Y weeks they get 3xp. They third Z weeks they get 2xp. Etc. They would be able to earn non-auto XP in other means even above this cap, but once they hit 200xp, they HAVE to be active to get XP.

Granted this then comes to the problem of:

How do I keep people with piles of XP from "solving all the problems"? One problem with Mage as a game is that allows for such a wide range of abilities. And thus people with piles of XP can very, very easily do everything and steal the spotlight. Yes, your character can both fight and solve the puzzles-- but if you do, will the other people in the scene have any fun at all?

I think if I run another game I'll need to find a way to have people come up with what "roles" they want to play, and how to keep them from stepping on each others toes and working as a cohesive unit. So everyone has fun.

    • Capped XP vs Staggered XP?

Most games these days tend to have a staggered XP policy:

Full XP at X to Y weeks/xp total. 3/4th XP at Y to Z weeks/xp total. 1/2 XP at Z to N weeks/xp total. And so one until you're at something like 1/5th xp or 1/10th xp a week. Or getting 0.

The point of this-- in every case that it has been pitched to me --was to allow "new players to catch up to old players". e.g. New players get more XP vs the old players getting less, so someday there's something resembling an even ground.

However, since most games also offer XP as rewards for PrPs, does this model actually work? Or can the old players just keep supplementing their auto-xp with PrP-xp? Do we really care if it doesn't work all that well?

Occasionally, I also get the idea that people do staggered XP because it puts a soft cap on XP without looking like it. I've contemplated XP caps before. The last time I talked about it, however, I got an overwhelming amount of negative feedback, even when the XP cap was suggested as something pretty high (that most characters would never actually hit).

      Anyone have any thoughts?

I've been thinking about if I were ever to do a game again, instead of doing staggered XP I'd do an XP cap. Something suitably high that hitting it didn't feel completely arbitrary but low enough that you can't be maxed out in every single trait.

(e.g. if it took like 150xp in nWoD 2E to max out every trait-- this is not true it's an example --you'd get maybe 125xp at the cap.)

      Thoughts?

I auto-log because after everything during the last few years my memory sucks. I also have to take notes on things too 😞

I have three years worth of logs. Everything is logged automatically. Of course I rarely go back into the logs. I've found it useful to go back and find scene poses that got paused, look at old logs at old RP fondly, etc.

I'm not even sure what some of these are any more -- What on earth was 'fab'? I'm sure I didn't have a character named 'fab'. I wonder what on earth that world was.
