      Hypocrite!

      I mean, I feel like I've successfully proven that I CAN, in fact, do JUST THAT.

      I'm sorry, let me rephrase briefly:

      You can't be busy with other stuff for a long time and leave us high and dry and then come back and be like 'waaah they're busy now'. Without being a DIRTY HYPOCRITE.

      Go take a shower of honesty and self-crit.

      @Coin, my man, broheim, Broba Fett, brochacho; you seem like you have a lot on your mind, heart, and shoulders. If you need to talk about it, just log onto Arx and page me. I'm more than willing to hear you out.

      You can't advertise for a harem, man. You have to be sneaky about it. Collect them like trading cards and then hope they don't freak out when you try to get them to TS with you in the same scene together.

      You're fucking with tradition, here.

      @Glitch
      Dresden Files? I only just started them. They're okay, so far. Do you like witty, snarky, comedic fantasy? Robert Asprin's "Myth" series is fantastic for that; a lot of his stuff reminds me of a less poetic and more personal Pratchett. The Percy Jackson books, especially the second collection, "The Heroes of Olympus", are pretty phenomenal. For darker, grittier urban fantasy, "John Dies at the End" is pretty great.

      For High fantasy, I strongly recommend The Death-Gate Cycle, and if you haven't read it for some punishable-by-death reason, The Earthsea Cycle, particularly the first three (though the others are nothing to scoff at, as LeGuin is pretty much amazing at anything she attempts).

      You can also go here and then scroll down and hit the "Literature" tab for a list of cool urban fantasy stuff.

      FYI, this comes off super salty and snobby.

      True, but also accurate.

      If I advertise that I'm selling cheeseburgers only with bacon instead of beef and lettuce and tomato instead of cheese, I'm actually selling BLTs. Both are delicious sandwiches, but they aren't the same thing. Honestly, I am kind of curious why someone would limit themselves to an established IP, when they're utilizing hardly anything from that IP.

      1. You can be accurate without coming off salty and snobby;

      2. Because they feel like it.

      Maybe instead, they could have said, "this just doesn't feel like Star Wars to me" and it would have accomplished the message without also being negative in an ad thread. That's what the Hog Pit's for. 😉

      @arkandel said in Books...Books...Books....:

      In much of my adult life I was an avid reader. Even as of a few years ago, while I commuted to work, I would read at least one book per week on the bus - sometimes more.

      Then I stopped. YouTube, games, Netflix, Reddit... they were easier, and I grew out of the habit.

      I finished my first book in years yesterday. The Blacktongue Thief by Christopher Buehlman was a fucking treat; really strong characters, an intriguing setting, witty dialogue and great prose. I enjoyed it greatly.

      Onwards to catching up with series I had abandoned before finishing! The Fires of Vengeance by Evan Winters is next.

      I stopped reading too.

      This year I buckled down and made a commitment to read a book a week, and so far I've kept to it. It's been pretty great; sometimes it's difficult, but.

    • RE: Star Wars: Age of Alliances

      So someone make a Star Wars game where people can play Jedi and Sith. Maybe set it far enough into the future that the canon is history; or far enough into the past that it doesn't matter. I'd rarther the former despite us not knowing what's coming. You could have legends about how everything turned out and have none of it be true; or simply ignore whatever comes next in canon that doesn't fit the narrative.

      Maybe a setting where Force sensitivity is ubiquitous and the Jedi and Sith orders have splintered into many factions with different ideals, tenets, and reasonings.

      You know, how things tend to actually work.

      LIKE OKAY

      The First is the grandaddy of all Evil. It's scary, yeah. It has a lot of goons that are powerful, yeah. But it's not practically powerful right now and its army is kind of ehhhh.

      If you talk to Illyria or Glory about The First, they'd go, "geez, that old geezer? i don't even wanna run into it, it just goes on and on about the good ol' days", and Jasmine's like the capitalist grandchild that is legit on non-speaking terms with the First on because she used all the things the First taught her and then totally dumped it in a home.

      That's the First.

      It's big. It's scary. But it's old and kind of tired and everything it does will be heinous if its wheelchair (the Hellmouth) doesn't get a stick shoved through it (Spike) by some upstart kids (Buffy and the Scoobies).

      Glory and Jasmine got way closer to totally fucking everything up than the First (even if the First took Sunnydale with it).

      I think the main difference here is that both Glory and Jasmine, for example, died. The First--well, did it really? No. Probably not. It's still there. Being annoying and old and shaking its cane at the Wolf, the Ram, and the Hart. "Poop on your own lawn!" it says, while some PTB-appointed champion ala Drogyn changes its metaphorical diapers.

      Played a little Vampyr with the ladyfriend (I play, she tells me "no, don't do that" and "omfg, Manuel, you don't just ASK someone that" and "the box is shimmering, that means you can open it, no, not that box, omfg here let me do it" and "KILL IT, KILL I--you're dead again") and I really liked it. Some technical difficulties, but I'll figure that shit out.

      I really liked the blood tracking stuff--reminded me a lot of The Witcher 3's tracking stuff. I still think that sort of system would be awesome for a werewolf game.

      @Wretched said in NPC Roster:

      So last night I expanded on this a bit, and so far a few people have mentioned positive things, and i am looking for more feedback.

      So there will be Families on Miami, no surprise, and we were also building an NPC family, intended to be deeply imbedded in local politics with hooks all over the place in most spheres.

      The Idea is this: What if we handed that entire family, to Player ST's. Like take a huge set piece, that can affect the game, spheres and institutions of the game, that are all connected to a larger thing, and just hand it to the player base to run plots with. Differing and even clashing ideas from ST's can be family infighting. With a little structure built into it, but minimal staff interfearance.

      It'd be a bit of a trust exercise back and forth, but one of the bigger things I hear about on games in the past is feeling like you cant affect anything in the game. This could ne just one way to do it, Sucess from the 'Evil Family' would grow thier influence, failure means they are driven back a bit.

      I feel like I'm finding the shape of a cool idea... I just need to make sure it's not just old food in my teeth.

      Anything that foments RP is good. You really will need a system for "Affecting the world" though. Like, a point based, 'x number of successes on y number of [theme] actions to achieve [goal]'. Or something.

      @Ominous I've been reading the Cross Gen comics again and have been inspired by the myth arc of The First and the world of Mystic. It could definitely play out as a cool L&L type game,

      I am more inspired by Kill Six Billion Demons' central cityworld of Throne and the demiurges who are locked in a cold war. I could also see a world where numerous covenants/guilds/houses/universities/priories/whatever are constantly jockeying for position in some sort of senate. Maybe each org has one Grandmaster who has absolute control of the org, but everyone else is slowly waiting for the Grandmaster to die to then try to take the reins.

      ugh, fucking K6BD is so fucking amazing

      @Coin And my point is that your experiences do not represent the totality of anything /either/.

      But I didn't express them as such. I did not say "OCs and FCs can always interact on the same level in every game". I said, "it's possible, I've seen people enjoy it and do it".

      You, on the other hand, present it as an impossibility.

      There is a difference.

    • RE: RL Anger

      It would be great if life could stop shitting on me in tiny ways that accumulate to the point where I am about to have a fucking mental breakdown in the middle of the office.

      I'm moving on Saturday, which is stressful enough. I'm also moving in with my brother (unavoidable due to monetary issues), which is ten times as stressful, especially since I've had to help him with his move while I am suspicious, based on the fact that now that he is moved into his room he is doing jack all to clear up the mess left in his wake, that he won't be helping me with mine at all.

      My internet at my apartment died this last month due to some "massive problem" that they can't apparently fix in over three weeks. So I've been cut-off in my apartment because my phone provider is a piece of shit that gets no signal in my apartment, so I have no internet and no phone at home.

      The house I am moving into has water pressure issues so I was going to put in a water pump to make sure we don't run out of water--but that's not possible due to technical issues with how the house is built and cistern shit.

      My debit card demagnetized itself.

      My landlady's lawyer is hounding me constantly about bills which I am paying.

      And just now, trying to hire a new ISP for the new house, JUST AS I FINISH GIVING THEM ALL MY INFO but before they can give me an installation date--the call cuts out. Then I spend 30 minutes on the phone getting bounced from one person to the next until someone finally informs me their tickets system is down--please call back in a few hours. Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck.

      Like, legit, I cannot catch a break. Not a single fucking break. And it's all stupid shit that would be annoying but not so bad on their own but they just keep coming, god dammit.

      @ZombieGenesis said in What Types of Games Would People Like To See?:

      That's my thought, honestly. I think, in theory, MH/PbtA should be a grand slam for how MU's mostly function(cooperative RP) but I think there'd be immediate natural resistance when someone used a string on their character. Players seem okay when a dice pool says they lost a round of combat and take X damage but I can see a lot of resistance to someone spending a string and trying to apply a condition to a character. Damage X is okay but telling someone "I just dredged up some crap from your past and gave you the OUTSIDER condition" would likely be met with "I'm not comfortable with that" and lots of arguments.

      That said, I do think a WoD alternative would be fantastic. I've been pondering trying something using a hack of the Dresden Files Accelerated Edition rules. Gives more crunch than regular Fate Accelerated but is still fast-paced and easy to consume.

      It's just another version of the "social stats are mind-control" bullshit.

      If you can't buy in to the system you're playing, then why are you playing that game? Because there's nothing else around? Lame.

    • RE: The 100: The Mush

      There is also the problem of patience.

      Most people do not have any, when it comes to feeling left out. So if a staffer who runs shit for everyone is currently concentrating on a specific plot that a specific group is the center of, someone outside of the plot will complain that they want plot too, but if it isn't given to them relatively soon, the conclusion they draw is that it never will.

      As a storyteller, I like to tell stories from beginning to end and not start a shitload of things and then never end them, so it ends up looking like I am focusing on one group to the exclusion of others... because I am... at the moment.

      And it's fucking annoying.
