@thebird I feel for ya. I start meds on Friday for my anxiety. First time I've ever taken them and I'm terrified.

      Just chill out.

/ducks and covers. SORRY SORRY SORRY.

No, seriously, it'll be okay. Having taken meds before, my two pieces of advice are keep up with the meds's schedule and don't quit cold turkey, especially without consulting your doctor; and if you suspect your meds are having adverse side-effects, tell your doctor--don't just power through it, because it could just be that that medicine isn't one your body can readily handle.

Basically, don't self-regulate or ignore symptoms, ask your doctor what side effects it might have, etc.

I'm sure you already know all this, but it never hurts to reiterate. It's your health and having a less anxious @VulgarKitten is in everyone's best interest.

@BobGoblin said in POLL: Super Hero MU Gut Check:

Of course. I'm stuck in development meetings for work and bored out of my mind. If I hate my life why not spread it?

HOWEVER, to clarify for the meg

I believe the reason I see this more prominent in consent games is because of the type of player that open systems appeals to. Again from experience, when there is no real risk of negative consequences other than self imposed ones it encourages a different mentality than one that has checks.

To further as I stated I'd like to see a heroes game that used some kind of system for checks rather than solely consent largely in part to see if it would alleviate this problem. So yes. It is a player issue but I believe it's a player issue because the system appeals to that sort of player.

In fact I'd be curious to see how much of our player base overlaps between pure consent and checked consent games.

In discussions with my circle of associates (I don't have friends clearly) about the topic of heroes mu the consensus with them is that the lack of structure system is a problem. This is both from people who play open consent heroes games and those who refuse to. So I'm not pulling this topic from my ass but rather bringing up something that I've had discussions with no less than 8 people over.

Tldr someone should try a system for heroes games that involved some kind of check consent rather than purely open consent

IMO, it's only a problem because it doesn't fit their view of what a good and entertaining game should be, which is probably not a universal constant.

I've played in all sorts of game, both with stats and those that are pure consent, and while there are certain people that only play one or the other, my experience [anecdotal, but extensive enough that I could probably apply some experimental methods and processes if I were so inclined (which hahahaha fuck off, I'm not)] is that those people willing to cross these system-based genres are perfectly willing to realign to the new paradigm and play within those rules.

You're always going to have drama and I have found that while it's true that consent games tend to have a much lower rate of 'haha, I KILLED YOU' drama, both from assholes PKing people and from people wanting to avoid a legitimate PK (however you measure that within context) because consent means the subject is moot, I have also found that consent games tend to provide sometimes much more satisfactory story and generate much more trust between a storyteller and a player. I have, in no particular order, been allowed to kill, maim, imprison, torture, clone, replace, brainwash, and a host of other things, other player characters (as an ST) in consent games because they trusted me to tell a good story and because they knew if it got too far, when they said 'this is too far' I would find a way to accomodate that limit. Statted games don't have this, and it's as much of a problem as your alleged problem stemming from a 'lack of structure'.

Yes, consent can be abused, but let's not pretend that it's some flaw that can't be overcome, or that adding stats and taking that consent away fixes a problem without opening up a huge fucking door for a host of other problems.

It's all about what makes you comfortable playing and the people that you surround yourself with.

Someone I used to be close with -- and almost had something romantic with -- just revealed publicly on Fbook that she found out her piece of shit boyfriend cheated on her, again. This was a dude who stole money from our very small group of friends and regularly invited other pieces of shit over to our "parties" (seriously, like five of us) without permission, and we had been pretty sure at the time that they stole from us as well. I haven't seen or talked to her in a couple of months now because of some unrelated bullshit between her and a mutual friend I met her through. I wish I could reach out to her, but I can't be sure what my own motivations are for doing so and I feel like she's probably being swamped anyway by a core of desperate dudes who have followed her relationship a little too closely since I first met her. I don't want to be one of them.

I wish I knew what to do about feeling angry and confused, but ultimately more I just wish I could help.

There is no good answer to this. I would just PM her with "if you need to talk, let me know" and leave it at that. It's not creepy, and it leaves the ball in her court so if she wants to talk and decides you're the one to talk to, the invitation's there. But you aren't, like, sitting down in a virtual couch too close to her wrapping your arm around her and going, "are you okaaaaaaaaaaaaaay?"

But what Coin is saying is 'This stuff happens on statted games because they are statted.'
I'm saying I've seen it happen on a consent game.

I did not say that at all.

I said that shitty people will find shitty ways of being shitty regardless of context.

I absolutely did not say what you quoted above.

That's how your argument came across to me, at least, in the wording used. That statted systems enable people to be assholes.

That's because you were arguing that consent games enable people to be assholes, so I provided examples of the benefits of consent vs. the pitfalls of statted systems.

But I have maintained, throughout the entire thread, in pretty much every post I have made, that it is shitty people at the core of the problems and not the context.

Consent games staffed and played by decent people? Decent game.
Consent games staffed and played by shitty people? Shitty game.
Statted system staffed and played by decent people? Decent game.
Statted system staffed and played by shitty people? Shitty game.

Sure, there are other things to take into account (is the theme interesting, are the rules balanced, does everyone have stuff to do, etc.,) but in this conversation about what people can and can't abuse, it's shitty people that are at fault.

no, just there to be fake-bisexual.

      Can you expand on this?

They wavered between whether Sara Lance (between her time on Arrow and LoT) was straight or lesbian or bi so much it really left a bad taste in my mouth.

I never saw them wavering. She was coded as straight at first and then she was coded as having sex with whoever she was with at the time, which was Oliver (again, for some reason) and Nyssa (for obvious reasons). But on Legends she's pretty clearly always been coded as bisexual, far as I could tell.

@Arkandel said in What locations do you want to RP in?:

@Coin Yeah, Eldritch had a lot more 'character' as a city, albeit a fictional one, than real ones used as models for typical WoD games.

But then again you spent a lot more time developing and maintaining theme. Most game runners just slap this stuff on a wiki and they call it a day.

Part of making it an original, fictional setting was being able to come up with all that stuff. I mean, there's stuff in there that was never explored. Admitedly there's stuff that was and it ended badly.

Ashtown, for example, was technically named Ashtown (Lower and Upper) because that's where the lumber mills used to be. But the rumor (and the truth) was that they were called that because during the late 1700s and early 1800s, witch hunts and burning alleged witches on pyres uphill was done all at once like once every two months or something and the resulting ash from all the wood (and bodies) burning up made those neighborhoods feel like it was snowing ash.

@Rook said in Indicating Discomfort in a Scene (online):

Sexual assault and sexually-themed violence seems to be a major, recurring issue talked about on WoD game threads here. Yet, are the one genre of game that have the highest levels of Consent, Privacy and Conduct types of rules in place.

The genre is designed from the 10,000-foot-view to be gritty and realistic in a modern-world. Gritty and realistic horror is not the life that most people who have triggers want to live, even as a character.

      Like, duh.

This has to do with the way people's hang-ups, their traumas, and their psychological past and current make-up affects what they enjoy and how they can enjoy it.

Some touchy subject matter below (slurs, mention of rape, etc.)

For example, many men think that a woman who likes to be called "cunt, bitch, slut, whore," or who likes to be slapped or tied up, all during a consensual sex act, is going to be okay being called those things or being smacked or shoved or abused outside of the sex act.

This is so wrong. In general, people compartmentalize and enjoy things within a context. There are even--and I used this example because it's extreme and I thus better gets the point across, and I apologize to anyone it may honestly trigger--there are even women who have been raped in the past, who have rape fantasies now. Does this mean they secretly want to get raped again? No. Does it mean they want their roleplay partner to surprise them with a rape scene? No. Does it mean they want to be watching a TV show or movie and be surprised with a rape scene? No. It means that, when they are alone, some part of their brain and their desire has attuned itself to that fantasy. But it is very important to remember that fantasies are not necessarily what we consciously want, even if we are consciously thinking of them. Just because we fantasize about it does not mean we want it to happen or would even enjoy it at all.

So in a game where the setting and theme are gritty and dangerous and violent, we have policies that protect people who do not want to deal with gritty and dangerous and violent without their consent, much the same way people who enjoy abusive slurs or slapping or whatever during sex only enjoy it when it's consensual.

I edit to add a more mundane example: Some people like playing American Football. In american Football, you get tackled. Lots of people enjoy that aggressive physical contact within that context. Does that mean you get to tackle me on the street because I really like playing American Football? No, fucko, there is a time and a place.

One thing we did on UU was limit apps to the text buffer, iirc. I don't remember if it was each section (background, powers, flaws, etc) or the whole thing, but there was a hard cap based on the input buffer and if you went over your app just cut short and we'd basically telly ou 'your app's too long, cut stuff' before we'd even look at it.

It wasn't perfect but it made for pretty succinct apps.

One thing I definitely suggest is: let OCs be as powerful as the FCs.

      MARTIAN SUPERNATURALS.

Shit, Mars, symbolically speaking, is WAR. Do you have any idea how FUCKED UP the spirits of Mars would be once human influence seeped into the martian dirt and gave it that bellicose essence? Hold on toy our fucking hats, folks.

      Just sayin'.

I would actually LOVE a system-wide nWoD game with wormhole technology where each planet has been colonized and different ones are ruled in different ways. Maybe Earth is a husk of a planet--or has been largely left behind to flourish naturally again--and, like, you got weird terraforming on the moons of Jupiter and Saturn--players can feel free to create entire cultures, Pluto is a planet again because all the fucking Vampires love it there.
